Rutgers vs Penn State Wrestling Results and Update Thread

The RAC is mostly full. I only see tiny amounts of empty bleachers.

TTFP is annhilating our wrestlers so far, though.

Was hoping for at least a major from AA but I guess a win is a win

We look sluggish again like at Illinois. Ashnault should've majored. Not many good shots outside of him.

Kudos to Painton for wrestling this very tough stretch of highly ranked opponents, while Perrotti recuperates.

On regular BTN Ohio St lead Mich St 11-7 in front of about 47 fans in an old tiny gym.

Great updates! Please keep the results coming. I appreciate it. I assumed it would be on BTN.

Attendance announced at 6,071! (New record)

Uncle Bob and some football recruits in the house.

285: No. NR/8/NR Jon Gingrich gets the TD in SV to win, 5-3. No. 5 PSU defeats No. 22 -- 28-6.

disappointing that Smith and Ash, our stars, don't seem very aggressive. Smith would be 3rd string on Ped St I guess.

If I'm a number 1 ranked USA kid , like Suriano, I got to be thinking, will I actually IMPROVE if I go to Rutgers? I see talented guys like Winston, Ash, Smith, and...where's the improvement? where's the aggressiveness? Smith seems like he's going backwards, Ash in neutral, he should have Majority decisioned his guy, and was lucky to hang on. Theo showed up, at least.

McCabe, Delvecchio, Ash and Theo all wrestled well. For Ash sometimes beating the guy everyone expects you to beat is not as easy as it seems. The important thing is to pull it out and get the win, Ash did that. Painton, Visacarro and Pafumi were all overmatched no surprises there. Bakuckas seemed to wrestle cautiously but that is understandable considering who he was wrestling, but sometime you just have to go for it. Camp and Smith continue to be a disappointment. You can't win if you don't take a shot. It's time to take a look at our heavyweights coaching. Smith and Camp both looked like they were afraid to attempt a takedown. Really sad performance for our big guys.

Once again, Goodale says all the right things in his press conference.

On the crowd: "There's gotta be more than 6000 people there, I can't get over that. But it was a great crowd, and I'm just dying to give this fan base something to cheer about over the course of the match...I know it's gonna take some time, but we'll get there."

Coaches can only do so much and then the kids have to mentally kick in gear. Sometimes kids can't get over the mental part. It has nothing to do with their physical ability.

what's going on with smith? he really regressed. ash will be okay - this is his first season. camp...looked bad again, but that's expected now. theo - great win! he's a warrior!

wng: but coaches are accountable if the wrestlers don't perform. talk is cheap. like camp, coaches can also say all the right things, but if performance is not there, they are accountable. our wrestlers have been a disappointment from the winston, melde days (except for perrotti, which was huge surprise), but now with Pritzlaff, we are solid with the lower weights. leonardis - i'm not sure if any of our upper weights overachieved with him coaching them. to take the next step, we need someone to replace him.

"This is a fun place to wrestle, a big crowd," Sanderson said. "They did a nice job. I thought it was a great crowd. They were into it. When they won those (bouts), the place got pretty loud and there was a lot of excitement."

Question for those that know the roster and the sport inside and out. Would it be safe to say that this program needs 3-4 years to win these Big Ten matches? It is clear (to my untrained eye at least) that outside of AA the talent is NOT on the roster to win night in and night out. Compete yes but win not imo. So assuming recruiting takes off in the B1G with Donnie P on staff we need a talent upgrade across the weight classes and a few years of seasoning as it is not fair to expect under classmen to win consistently at this level. So is 3-4 years a fair assessment?

To me, ash looked aggressive to start - but Moss was playing D looking to counter. Ash realized and did what he needed to. If we had a chance at winning beating TTFP, then I'd fault him for not scoring more, but I have no issue with how he wrestled.

Billy missed a couple weeks - and missing two weeks straight in-season is like missing 2 months of conditioning if you can't live wrestle. I agree he needs to be more aggressive. I think (hope) he'll get there.

I heard that Camps first match at Iowa was the first time he hit 197 in "years". I see small bits from him that are encouraging - needs his wind. If he manages his weight properly I see an upward trend. Let's not forget the last two opponents were great wrestlers, and camp is about 4 matches in After 2+ years off.

Perrotti is a different story. I think he had a great streak at the NCAAs and maybe a couple losses have shaken his confidence. Like last year after goodale sat him, I expect him to come back strong. Hope I'm right.

Happy for theo. But damn he makes me nervous when he gets so high on top.

Despite the score, Pafumi seems to be improving every match. He may turn out to be a pleasant surprise. Backucus may slowly climb in the rankings over his career. He is comfortable wrestling anyone. $$$$

Never want to call for someone's job, but I think RU has to upgrade Leo's position. The upper weights have been a problem for years. Thoughts?
