Rutgers W Soccer Freshmen Come To Campus

No excuses for not winning the B1G title this year. Delany pretty much put a bow on this year's schedule...only B1G road game vs a team with a pulse is NW.

Let's hope their footwork is better than what was shown in that video. I'm teasing of course.

That team is going to be loaded
This is a very young team. One returning senior starter & only a couple of others. Only two junior field players, one a returning starter. The returning few seniors & juniors who didn't start have seen considerable playing time & should be significant contributors. The sophomore class is large & strong, with a lot of playing time logged last year. And the coaches are very high on this year's class. I do believe we will be a very strong side, with the potential to win the Big if the sophs build on last year, which I am confidant that they will, & the frosh contribute. Of course Murphy is back & could be a difference maker, not to take anything away from Jimenez, who was excellent last year.

Can someone give me a run down of this team. I know we have Murphy back. That is awesome one. I believe Tiernan and someone on D. Who do we have coming in that's really good?

Tiernan is with Sky Blue in the pro league. Has been starting lately & playing well. A lot of our returnees are very good.

I will give it a shot in a few posts since i need to leave soon and not being a sportswriter cannot type like one and these are opinions
Goalie ....... Mike at this time last year had an unbelievable sequence enterring last year.
Casey would have this year 2017 season and last year
Then Meagan McClelland takes over for 4 years in 2018 Meg is , and has been the goalie for the national u17, u18 national teams and will continue to do so . She in my opinion is a murphy close. Not facially but length and the propensity to play like a firth defender she will keep the legacy alive.
But like Casey come 2020 she will be the goalie on the womens national u20 world cup team and miss that season
The third in that sequence is Mia Justus who comes in fall 2021. She is and has been the goalie on the wnt u15, u16 national teams So goalie is safe for a decade

Minor snag Casey will not be here in 2020, briana Scarola graduates this year. Thus you had Ferreira , sorry forgot first name , a 2017 commit as the only roster goalie who will be here in 2020. This week 2016 commit Maggie Barron name disappeared from the roster and coincidently we signed Emma Huntzinger as the second goalie in the 2018 class. I dont think we take one in 2019
Bur rudad you would be correct to thank MS. Jiminez as she did everything we could have hoped for.

But the differences between a good goalie and the number one goalie in the country are extreme
Amanda Visco had the responsibilty of directing the backs, as a freshman, often with her back to the ball. Amanda will improve simply Casey is extremely vocal and take charge. Now the backs will each be where they should be
Casey , as stated, was a fifth defender. On any ball kicked back to her she will not wait. She will attack it and start the ball upfield. Last year we had to wait for the ball because our goalie might not have the foot skills to strike a ball why attacking it. Note in two scrimmages I only remember one punt. As the ball is coming back to her Casey has seen the whole field. Directed her back to where she wanted them. Timed her passes to be 4 yards upfield so no time is lost fielding a ball behind you. Last year we could not do that. With any pressure the ball was kicked out of bound.A ball on the left foot of the goalie was an oh shit no flail at ball
Caseys goal kicks are on average ten yards further so on a one positional assessment you can , hopefully, see how we improve
But back to Alana, thank you, standing in there vrs a lasar beam made the difference in 5 games

Agree with ho on the goalie analysis. Also our other starting freshman back last year, Chantelle Swaby, made tremendous progress throughout the year & late in the season was just excellent.

kaitlyn ferreira also. i think those gitls came in on their own. i dont know if all players have reported
but first scrimmage less than one month away

Next the backs
In the spring Kenie Wright switched, for all three games, to erin Smith's right back. conventional wisdom would say Swaby in the middle with Visco and choose between
Norton, Courtney needs stop trying to go thru people on her side of the field
jiminez all american who , in every game, played all three positions. She is a possible plug in anywhere
katona not sure if it was a red shirt , or injury, but she didnt play last year

moneme ------ adora got a long look in the spring at center mid. very good defense not much offense
Goldstein i think might red shirt
Tierney might start or play another position fast and versatile
But i have a different scenario. Christy Monroy played very little as a mid after a very distinguished youth career. In the spring game vrs Monmouth shea was probably the best player on the field as a center mid. The next two games she played, the whole game, at right center back next to Visco. She was smoothas silk , vocal, and was recipient of quite a few murphy passes to start the ball upfield. I think she might have won the job.
Swaby to left back and gets the first look from Murphy on pass outs. When she receives it she is quite fast and gets the bal upfield , on the attack, in a heart beat. The problem is 35-40 yards downfield she has no passing skills . Thus a work in progress i think will, and can, be refined
Last year Swaby, Wright, and Swaby were forced to play every single second , including all those double overtime games. All had visibly lost weight and were pretty tired by the ncaa's that cannot happen again.
Frank and Jiminez will card a lot of time and maybe Moneme in the backup middle and that might be the rotation
The big beneficiary here is Amanda. I think she was used as an anchor supporting everyone else and directing them, and Alana. The experience of Visco, swaby gained as freshman will be enormous
To me , if Monroy, is to be believed this will be vastly superior over last year

Monroy is very bright with good soccer sense. Doesn't make mistakes. Plus she is a leader. Also looking for her to have a fine year. A year of starting experience for both Swaby & Visco, plus Murphy behind them, will be invaluable. Agree re: Tierney Wiltshire--fast, versatile, & tough. And she played a lot last yr. Also understand that Adora Monome had an excellent Spring. She could come into her own this year. Megan Katona played in four games last yr., so didn't red shirt.

it to early to tell if the 2020 u20 World Cup will interfere with the season. In past years it has not been an issue. The previous three have not interfered with the season. It all depends if a Southern Hemisphere team wins the bid.

No excuses for not winning the B1G title this year. Delany pretty much put a bow on this year's schedule...only B1G road game vs a team with a pulse is NW.
Rutgers may have a favorable schedule but they will not be the favorite to win the conference. Penn State will be the huge favorite as they return 10 starters and get back 5 girls who sat out the season on the u20 World Cup team. Saying that Rutgers has no excuses for not winning the B1G is unrealistic expectations.

Thank god you are not an oddsmaker
so 3 returners on defense and 4 starters returning might improve the defense slightly basically all that occurs is you now have a 7 woman rotation
emily Ogle returns at mid but you lose Nickolette Driesse this is not an improvement
I dont think Ally Watt beats out Fannie Crouse or Megan schaffer so thats a push

So ten returning roster players and 5 wny u20 is , in reality, nothing but an increase in depth

Rutgers returns Casey Murphy who 'I would say makes the year to year improvement favoring Rutgers
Last year you tied Rutgers , at home where you are generally unbeatable, then lost 2-0 in the Big 10

So where exactly does your solid favorite assessment emanate from?

Also RU has been almost unbeatable at Yurcak the last 5 years or so, and only reason isn't 2 time defending B1G champs is because they were the road team both times in the B1G Champ Game. O'Neill is drilling it into the team's head to get home field advantage throughout the B1G Tourney.
