Rutgers Women’s Soccer Wraps Up Nonconference Slate Sunday at Delaware

0-0 at the half. Keeper with a real good save on Ali's shot. LaPlant mugged in the box--no call. Other than that to say we are playing like junk is an understatement. Several soft passes into the middle picked off & turned the other way. Very weak in the mid field. Swaby being out forces Provenzano to play center D & weakens us all up through the middle. Binkley started--struggled to say the least. Harrigan at attacking mid continues to not be strong on the ball. Overall we basically look like we never played the game before.

Not a good pattern the last couple of games and you can’t use the we are tired excuse

I was watching the live stream and the camera work was difficult to follow to say the least. They didn't show the foul. Anyone know what happened? Happy for the win but very odd ending

RU wins it 1-0 in double OT on an Ali penalty kick.
Glad we won but RU DAD why do you think we are playing like this what is lacking it looked to me early that we would be better offensively but I don’t see it and am frankly worried when we start Big play. Is O’Neill playing for low scores and tied like he did last year?

Dentist, no O'Neil is not playing for low scores. He has stayed with the more offensive oriented scheme that the team exhibited earlier. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. Killerbees3 is more knowledgeable on the technical aspects. IMO for one, the loss of Swaby necessitating the move of Provenzano to center D has started a domino effect in the middle which has left us less efficient. Further we just don't seem to be playing with pace or as hungry. Our execution is off. The developing chemistry seems to have disappeared. Rarely are we getting crisp on target one touch play & passes. Certainly not more than one in sequence. Don't want to lay it all on Amirah, but once again there were a few times when she had the ball in her feet around the box area & tried to do too much when she had someone open. By the time she realized she couldn't do anything she would attempt the pass but the play was gone. Nneka is tough to handle but really continues to lack soccer sense, also trying to do too much with the ball & missing mates & her touch on passes is a work in progress to say the least. Having said all that, we did play better in the 2nd half & Delaware's keeper made some good saves. As I say bees3 can give a better critique if he saw the game.

I actually thought the freshman Regan Berg was very good when she was in and she is also tall and is much better technically than Nneka but she has not seemed to see much action since

Outshot Delaware 19 to 8, corner advantage of 8-3, so there's offense, we need to do better on corner and restarts, the other thing that drives me insane is R's first thought is always back....we kick off and the 3rd pass is to our own keeper???? Why? We get a free-kick at mid field and we make a small pass back, why not send it into the box, a free kick is a reward for a foul, use it!!! corners are too high and slow and free kicks from 20 need to hard on frame. We still have players holding the ball too long and missing the advantage in transition, there are open players making good runs, hit the ball into space!! R needs to play faster and go forward, this team has the horses, 3 very good and very different forwards that give you many options. Amirah has to start finding LaPlant on her dynamic runs, she is almost always finding a space in behind, or through, I am not sure I have seen a better D1 forward at creating space off the ball this year! R is getting a lot of shots, a very good sign! but the one pass we miss is the easier shot we don't get, share the ball.....they just have to see things sooner, especially on the attack. The offense is creating, they just have to finish and more importantly see the better opportunities to get better chances.

Agree with you 100% especially the free kicks terrible on corner kicks and how many times we are on the attack and then all of a sudden we pass it backwards and one more thing I have noticed is our girls just don’t want to seem to shoot on goal from antything farther than the 18 yard line

Nneka is good when she receives a ball in behind the defense, long, fairly fast, long strides, strikes the ball well, but she struggles on the ball, if you go back and watch on most goals she has a lot of time to correct a bad 1st, 2nd, sometimes a 3rd touch to get a shot....but if she is in a tight space and has to hold possession, its a challenge and usually a turnover, this is why they need to move the ball sooner and combine as opposed to her trying to dribble like Ali and LaPlant can.

Richthedentist, I agree, It was very good to see LaPlant take 2 good high quality shots from beyond 18 in this game, she is easily creating the space to get those shots, and has passed as opposed to taking those shots, hopefully she keeps it up and starts driving them low and hard on frame. Both were on the left working to her right.

And I agree 100% with rudad, we are hurting in the midfield right now, a very obvious new problem that didn't exist a few games ago.

I believe LaPLant seems to be getting frustrated. She has no one to play with. As bees said she makes excellent runs to space & her line mates don't get it to her. As a result she seemed to be working harder to make for her own scoring chance & shot. And YES they have to see things sooner & make that crisp on the money pass & they will be playing faster.

Why don’t you (and others) have a discussion with Coach?
(Not busting on you. More an indictment of Coach.)
Hate hearing the same criticisms game after game (e.g., Ali being selfish with the ball vs making an easy pass to a teammate with a great opportunity)

I agree rudad, and I think since Ali has not been on her A game she's making some bad decisions and working too hard to score, not seeing the game, poor shot selection, etc. as opposed to playing the game the way its designed and taking what it gives her. Some facts: Ali has 5 goals, 3 have been PK's, 1 was a gift from LaPlant against Hofstra, I dont recall the 1st goal she scored, all 4 of Nnekas goals were thru balls (and that's her strength, find her for those opportunities) LaPlant has 1 goal (against a #11 Tennessee), and 3 assists, she also had a goal taken away on an off sides where she clearly was not and leads the team in shots......based on that info, we really need Ali to show up, wreak that havoc on opposing teams defenses thats expected which will create better chances for LaPlant and Nneka, lay the ball off when the defenses collapses on her! The 3 of them are such different players, which is good, but the offense needs to be designed around their individual strengths. I personally feel the offense is playing to their level of expectation based on the system they play, they cannot really do anything different unless the attack and tempo speed up, it just appears its designed to be a slow build up when it should be just the opposite, almost in your face! Just relentously attacking the the opposing defense, these 3 are fast and dangerous and hungry! Unleash them! Just need to make some minor adjustments to make it go. To me LaPlant has been the most consistent and dangerous all around player, Nneka has capitalized on most of her chances created by others and will always have a couple good chances created by others and Ali has one good quality goal (that I don't remember).....if she starts playing well, and starts to see the game, the entire offense will improve, she's been fairly one dimensional and easy to predict. If she mixes things up, passes, moves, creates, and thinks about the entire game, defenses will be more off balance and the flood gates will open for the entire team, think the Hofstra game.......

I am sure these opportunities are pointed out during film, they are glearing....obviously Mike knows what he is doing, he is one of the top coaches in the Country, the team is ranked #19 and is 6-0-1, they are always organized, very difficult to score on, focus on possession, and playing back to switch, the system just "seems" to sometimes limit offense, perhaps it really doesn't?? But if its designed that way, it works!!! It does result in a lot of OT and but VERY few losses, just less wins. Just seems there's some offense waiting to explode and its there on the field already! We are just having conversations about observations.

Somebody asked about the foul in OT which led to the PK. I didn't see the foul but Rutgers fans in my area immediately called out that there was jersey holding. Also, and much more importantly, the ref was close to the action in the box as it came off of a corner kick AND gave a yellow card on the foul so must have been pretty obvious and somewhat severe.

I have seen numerous times where she has not finished on break always because other lack of foot skills

I want to be optimistic but somehow I don't see it in Ali's DNA to change. I really hope that I am wrong & will be extremely happy if I am. Her being willing to see the play & share the ball will make the difference with this club. It will also have the added benefit for her of being more open herself as D's will not be able to collapse on her. LaPLant is an excellent passer & will find her.

This recurring theme regarding Ali is concerning. If there is an issue to be addressed with her then O"Neill needs to make sure that everyone has the team first mindset to make sure the unit reaches its full potential. Hard to criticize the guy given the success the program has had, but if the consistent lack of an extra pass in the attacking end is that obvious to those who regularly watch the team, it has to be the same for the coaching staff and team during film sessions.

Its not just the lack of the extra pass but the timing we just don't seem to see the girls when they are making runs but that is indicative of them dribbling with their heads down and not seeing the field which isn't always easy the player has to have a knack for that. I can somewhat understand with Ali as last year with Brittany not at full strength she was kind of on an island by herself many times so she had to to one on one but if the staff is not pointing out to her on the game film than shame on them because not on Amirah but many of the other girls are holding on to the ball too long.

Question for Killer Bee: How has our spacing been? I have missed most of the last two games but in the first few that I caught we in my opinion do not get the ball wide enough and make ourselves easy to defend

A win is a win BUT that’s consecutive Sundays in which we seemed to play, in a word, “uninspired.” MAYBE the girls have been looking towards conference play because, otherwise, there are going to be issues. Time to turn it up a few notches!

Yes they are. From what I've seen of the men, they move the ball very quickly. No playing with it. Very impressive.

Watched the last 20 minutes of the men vs. Manhattan and there is a freshman from my hometown of North Brunswick I never saw him play in high school because he played PDA but he is starting as a freshman and is very good; but yes the men are looking really good with a lot of movement and quick passing

We aren't really an outside in team, think about how many goals have been scored from creating width, a cross and a shot. We seem to be most dangerous getting in behind, through balls on diagonal runs, in behind, near and far post but from from the corners of the box, to the weak side, and quite a bit this year from just inside mid field, with a ball in behind the defense. Issue is, we miss a lot of those dangerous runs. We have a lot of speed up top and a fair share of technical ability and I think we do create a lot of space, especially LaPlant finding openings off the ball, there's been spaces big enough to drive a tractor trailer through that we miss, where there's so much time and space and the defense doesn't even know we got in behind. In the 4-3-3 Amirah is the target player, its designed for her to get the most touches and she does, what she does with the ball when she gets it is very important, how quickly the right decision is made, how often do you see her make a diagonal run and then connect with a player coming in behind the defense? With the speed up top, if they just move the ball faster, and constantly move off the ball there will be tons of space and connection that will be very difficult to defend, if you look back at a couple of Nnekas goals and LaPlants goal against Tennessee there's been some dynamic runs and when we find that run early we are in.......

Agree with you we can’t even make good corner kicks!!
