On Saturday, October 24th, Rutgers will play Ohio State in it’s first college football game on national television. We are playing the best team in the country - last years’ National Champion. We’ve faced many difficulties over the past several weeks and I want to believe we are stronger because of it. Many of our players are hurt, many are freshman or sophomores being asked to step up in our time of need. Regardless of what happens, don’t forget the most important thing. It’s about Rutgers.
Forget About Me I Love You - F.A.M.I.L.Y. Just a word, a symbol, many people talk about … We Believe. We stand together and help each other. There are many symbols, many traditions, that will surround that day. It’s not just a football game. It’s about Rutgers.
The chop, the axe, carrying the axe high in the air out to help lead the team, cutting the wood, the hand motion of the chop by the players - it's all about individual accomplishment and effort. It's about the very hard work that's required to succeed in the game and in life. It's about Rutgers.
The Rutgers Pulse is a group unity thing – a new thing. It's about being a part of Rutgers, it's about conveying loyalty through the pounding of the heart. It's about thousands of fans and players standing together against all odds. It's about Rutgers.
The air guitar on third down, when everyone stands and strums to the beat – it’s about preparation for that extra effort, that coming together that music brings - when the spot lights are all on that one moment when the guitar strings lift the soul. It's about Rutgers.
The cannon, a salute to a job well done - a symbol of our long history and tradition. The Scarlet Knight, our mascot, the student section, Cheer and the band - all part of the pomp and circumstance to add color and life to a memorable event. The music, young and loud, distinctly Jersey, reminding you this is our home. This is where we live and we welcome you. It’s about Rutgers.
These are the things that make college football at Rutgers a part of its identity. An identity we are still growing as a new proud member of the B1G conference. An identity that’s about teachers and students preparing to face the world. It's about coming together to put it all on the line. When Coach Flood stands in that tunnel ready to lead us out, it's all about one thing. It's about Rutgers.
We played in the very first college football game ever. Saturday Oct 24th will not be our last. No matter what happens, win or lose. Remember the most important thing. It's about Rutgers.
