Savage weighs in on the search

What a tease. If Tom wasn't hurt this year he'd be starting for Houston with all the injuries they had. He had an impressive preseason.

Schiano really screwed up with regards to this Rutgers man!
No, he didn't. See below.
Kinder than I would have expected from Savage. Not that I have issues with him, but he has every right to hold a grudge against Schiano.
No, he doesn't. He should hold one against his father. And against ........ not worth saying it.

When did that debacle become all Schiano's fault? As I recall, Savage (and family) had some growing up to do as well.

Always liked Tom Savage, but never figured out why he still transferred to Arizona after Cignetti was hired in 2011.

If he stayed OR if got that hardship transfer in 2012 then he'd be the starting QB on that 2012 Big East co-championship team. Savage would probably have led the 2012 team to an outright conference title and a BCS bowl game. Which could've meant Flood would still be Rutgers head football coach today!

Wrong

Please explain why he tried to come back before Schiano left?

I think feedback on Schiano from a former player is lot more valuable then the thoughts of the fans....just saying.
Around the time that Schiano was at Tampa Bay and taking heat from his players in the press, Anthony Davis had chimed in (piled on, perhaps) via social media with comments that were not particularly kind to Schiano. Not sure how AD feels now.

that's because GS didn't let him smoke up and still play.

Who was the Oline coach again when Savage was running for his life?
To be fair.

Schiano was the one who had final authority who was offered at the time

Flood was also the o line coach for the best line in the school's history in 06

He had no line. Couldn't pass behind it. Couldn't run behind it. So we Wild Knighted it.

Yet we elevate the man responsible for that debacle to head coach. Only at Rutgers!!

Let's not forget that we brought in KC and his Sunshine Band (yeah, I know, I'm beating the hell out of that) and switched from a pro-set to a spread offense, complete with different blocking schemes. The real problem was that we did not have the right personnel for that, as the offensive linemen we had had been recruited to fit the pro-set. I can fault Flood for a number of issues, but not that one as he had to work with whatever he had.

DJ: I think there was some sort of philosophy switch to go from power-running (man-to-man blocking with lots of pulling) to zone-running (take a step playside and block whoever is in your zone; if no one, double-team and make your way to the LBers).

Now the former requires brute size and strength while the latter emphasizes speed/agility. You can do either style from a power set or a spread set.

While Schiano & co. may try to convince us that the switch to zone running was due to the success it was having at the pro level, I think we naturally gravitated towards it out of necessity since we couldn't attract the herculean 4/5-star linemen to man the power schemes I think Schiano preferred.

And when we showed we couldn't hold the edge long enough for a TE or FB to execute their kick-out blocks, we tried to spread teams out instead.

Yet the same fundamental problem remained regardless of blocking scheme or formation: teams would blow-up our running plays in the backfield because there was always at least one weaker linemen they could exploit the heck out of.

Greg's/Cignetti's answer to B. Kelly. The results of the whacky snap offense.

With all that Savage went through during his career, that's a pretty strong endorsement for Schiano (and I'm not saying that it was Schiano's fault, just that Tom could be be bitter). Sounds like Savage has grown up a bit.

Yeah really, more relevant than anything anyone of us has to say… At least those of us that are not former four-star recruits and starters.

Ding..Ding..Ding..Round 12. (at least we could get a hot chick holding up a card before this latest round of debate)

Wow a great comment from a great kid followed up by a bunch of horse$hit. Troll, troll, troll.

1. OL was an issue and as mentioned there with other issues for Savage.
2. Can't really listen to anything AD says. Great talent.
3. Stop the Flood bashing. He came to RU in 2005 and we had some great teams while he was here and a couple of not so great teams. Better than we can say about our last 150 years.
4. Stop the Schiano bashing for those who need to bash one or the other. See above.
5. Stop bashing Ciarocca which is usually the next epidode in the trolling trilogy. We tried to put in a new Offense but did not have the personnel. Every was screaming for the spread after Cinci whipped us. We tried it. We came back to the Pro. After this bad season everyone is screaming for the spread again.
6. Defense is our key. Need to keep games close going forward. Worked for Michigan this year minus the OSU game last week.

See, that's just it.

We had a bluechip pro-style QB (Savage) and tried to wedge him into a spread.

Then, we had a spread QB (Dodd) and tried to force him into pro-sets where he could barely see over the line. Not to mention, we had a an NFL-esque WR corps being severely underutilized (Coleman, Harrison, Pratt, Sanu, Wright -- !?).

Now we have another spread QB that we're jamming into pro-sets when he has shown the exact traits (mobility & the ability to throw on the run) that you look for in a spread QB.

We never seem to maximize our roster.

On the contrary, guys who rode pine at Rutgers go on to contribute in the NFL. It's just completely headscratching roster mismanagement.

It was a lose/lose for everyone. If Savage stays we go to at least one BCS game and Savage becomes a second round or better pick.

I'll not get into responding to everything you claim but exactly who rode pjne and excelled in the NFL? Cooper played a lot here and was a guy who changed from WR. What is so head scratching? That's called Gocoaching by most people.

I won't get into all of your rant because some anyone can second guess and complain. That's easy.

But who rode pine and is excelling in the NFL. Don't say Copper who switched feom WE and played a whole lot in a great secondary. That would be a foolish comment so allow me to spare you from making it.

Yeah: My point was the best players were often underutilized or mishandled.

BTW: What's up with: "That would be a foolish comment so allow me to spare you from making it."? That's weak as hell! Grow up!

That's why Tom wanted to go back to RU after leaving the UofA, he forgot to hold a grudge.
Schiano didn't treat Savage wrong, just made Tom accountable and Tom Savage admitted it was his mistake when he left RU because he had the wrong attitude.
