Pike doesn't fill the last scholarship. I saw something that Hurley won't fill UCONNs last scholarship because there aren't enough minutes to go around. It seems impossible to carry 13 players where all deserve playing time.

The max number of scholarships should be reduced to 12. Yes, that is 300 less kids getting a free ride, but it would make more talent available. Also, it will lead to less portal activity as there would be less kids are frustrated by lack of playing time and less open slots in other programs.

I was thinking this exact thing this morning.

What's the harm?
Is the 13th guy on the roster really transferring because of playing time?
And are teams really suffering?

Every offseason fans talk about this magical 11 man rotation the team will have where everyone gets meaningful minutes because all the players are so great.

Yea if we are being honest - every "12th or 13th" man usually belongs down a level.

The last guy on a blue blood probably could play meaningful minutes at a school like BC or Minnesota

The 12th or 13th guy on RU - as we have seen can go play at a mid major or low major.

The domino effect obviously would prob result in strong low and mid major teams which isn't a bad thing. But it isn't going to change much in the overall scheme of things

Maybe my thinking is based on my dislike for the wild, wild west known as the portal. If teams have less "extra" slots on the roster where they can take a flier on a kid, less kids will jump into the portal.

It’s 350+ fewer men and if you cut that many men’s scholarships you’d cut that many women too. Over 700 fewer scholarships

The one variable that could present a risk is injury to multiple players

In case someone is wondering, there almost 400 more MBB players entered the portal this cycle than WBB players.

Until Title 9 changed the numbers, men’s basketball used to have 15 scholarships. Women still do, I believe.

definitely support cutting it by one but what’s to stop a bigger nil deal to cover tuition and expenses for a 13th redshirt type player to get one year to earn a scholarship or hit the portal?

Pike can’t even fill 10 scholarships let alone 13. How many scholarship players do we have for this year? 8?

Those 12th and 13th spots aren't what they once were.

Much harder these days to stock a couple of promising freshmen at the end of the bench to develop them for a year or two before getting time as RS Sophs. Injuries also become a little more impactful because you don't have experienced depth beyond your core rotation.

I'm honestly good with the 13th schollie being used as a reward for walk-ons.
