Senate Bill -1860 sponsored only by Senator Sweeney has been posted for a vote on Thursday, June 19th. This bill adds 4 political appointments to the Rutgers Board of Governors upsetting the balance on the Board and basically turning the control of Rutgers over to the political machinations of Trenton (Think UMDNJ and PA of NY/NJ). The pretext for this bill is to add members with medical expertise. However this concern was already addressed when the Board was expanded from 11 to 15 with the integration of most of UMDNJ. The Office of Legislative Services has opined that this bill is potentially illegal and in violation of both the State and Federal Constitution. If this bill is passed and signed into law it will most likely be challenged by the Board of Trustees at an expense to Rutgers and the taxpayers of New Jersey.
