I will never understand how Rod Van Ness a Rutgers wrestler and NJ High School Coach didn’t send his son to RU.
He let his son make his own decision
I was never a big fan of Rodney Van Ness. Didn't really care for his personality. That said, he was a very good wrestler for the program. He really stuck it to us, and showed no loyalty, whatsoever. I get it, Penn State is the "wrestling meca" of college, but it's not like we are some fleabag program and Shayne couldn't thrive here. So, I guess Karma reared it's ugly head. He got spanked.
The entitlement here is wild, thinking that he was obligated to come here because his father went here 30 years ago. By all accounts he’s a good kid.

This is bat shit crazy. The man has a son who is elite. He had a chance to wrestle for what has been the best wrestling program in the country over the past 10 years. To hold some sort of grudge over making a decision that was best for his son over your fandom is super weird and petty. What are the chances that Rod van ness is on some wrestling message board right now acting like a turd or talking about his accomplishments from 40 years ago, or mentioning your name. Shayne is a very good friend of mine and is a great, respectful, humble young man. Rod is a great friend also. I wish he had chose us but did not. I root for him every time he wrestles. Was very surprised Lovett beat him.
Calling someone a turd is cordial? When have I ever reminisced about any of my matches, unprovoked? If anything I kept my anonymity until people probed me.
Rodney is a nice guy and Shayne is a great young man. Shayne made his best overall decision to be in the top room in the nation, to remove distractions, and focus. Rodney was a good wrestler here, never disparaged program, and let his son make the decision. Would Rodney have been on the podium with more depth and quality in the room? Probably. Don't have to root for Shayne, but hard to root against him. he is mature and respectful to opponents.

Why do people think the room is the main reason for a wrestlers success?? It’s quite impossible to tell unless we ask a wrestler that has been both in a PSU room and a different room…
We have a prime candidate in Suriano to ask.. as he’s been in PSU’s room, ours and, Michigan.. he knows the diff… would he have been able to win a chip even at a Cambell?? My gut tells me yes…

There are plenty of Blue chippers that went to the Iowas, Penn States and Ohio States of the world and flopped.On the flip side, you have Cary Kolat wrestling for a marginal Lock Haven and winning two NCAAs titles, a Tom Martucci wrestling for a decent D3 TCNJ and winning a D1 NCAA title, a Carl Monaco wrestling for Montclair St, another D3 team, making it to NCAA finals, Darryl Pope from an average D2 Cal St Bakersfield taking it to Rico Chipparelli in the NCAA finals but loosing in the last 30 seconds, and just as recent AJ Ferrari wrestling for Cal St. Bakersfield a below average D 1 school, now currently undefeated and ranked #1.

SVN wrestled on a top ranked Blair team and it’s no surprise he wanted to go to a top ranked PSU program. I don’t fault any kid for making a decision that they feel is right for them. The only thing about certain kids that bugs me is they grow up going to SKWC and our coaches invest time in building relationships from a young age and then completely ignore us during the recruiting process.
SVN didn't look too great against Lovett, but that was his first big time match after a year long injury. I expect a different outcome at Big10s and Nationals. Unfortunately, he (like Austin Gomez) are national champs during the season and not when it matters most.
