slyker

if he wasn't Coach Flood, why were all of the posts being deleted?

It might have been because he was a repetitive, agenda driven pain in the butt whose only purpose in posting seemed to be to continuously make excuses for Flood, (no matter what kind of Titanic-like disasters were taking place out on the field), and/or stating his case over and over again about why CL should be kept as RU's starting QB...no matter what. -And probably after a while some of the mods simply got tired of his act.

What I would like to know is, what did Zappaa post in his "This will probably be deleted" post? It was deleted before I could click on it.

Sykler's absence since Flood was relieved of duty is a bit curious.

A lot of people beat up on slyker pretty mercilessly. Like most people, I didn't often agree with his conclusions about Flood and the state of the program. But a lot of the time, he didn't even post conclusions; he often just posted factual counterpoint to the bullshit-spewing anti-Flood lynch-mob, not that the lynch-mob wanted to hear it.

And, when the lynch-mob turned on him, lynch-mobs not being known for being particularly discriminating about who they lynch once they get going, he remained relatively composed. Which was impressive.

I respect when someone calmly counters mob mentality with simple facts. It shows character and a rare ability to resist that all-too-human willingness to behave like sheep.

I don't care who slyker is. I hope he keeps posting.

A tad revisionist. I recall slyker being an unconditional lover of Flood decision making and reaping his just reward. He was a bit unkind to Retig at times.

Thanks for posting this. Totally agree. It's pretty disgusting the things that the anti-Flood, anti-Laviano crowd say in response to those who don't necessarily agree with 100% of what they say. I'm sure that they'll attack you for posting this.

I didn't mind them posting facts and statistics, which in the case of this past season could almost always be countered and logically debated by offering other facts/stats. It is the posting of numerous hypothetical scenarios (some unlikely enough to qualify as strawmans) to qualify the team's performance or justify the lack thereof, as well as an unyielding, borderline blind faith in several decisions made by the previous coaching staff that seemed to defy logic and sometimes what I was seeing on the field with my own two eyes. It was the latter, which I felt was fair to strongly criticize.

I tend to agree that the anti Flood and anti Laviano crowd go overboard. I basically agreed with most of the anti Flood comments but I stopped being vocal about it. Why keep repeating the same crap three times a day? I also understand why they post since the Pro Flood crowd tries to silent their criticism for the last 4-6 months. Let's start new and wait until there are some real problems.

And this guy was right there with the unconditional love, too

Has Towers been heard of since Flood was let go.
Maybe he might know [winking][winking] where Sykler's hiding

It wasn't unconditional, but I think he should have been given at least another year. Is there anything wrong with having a different opinion than you, RU75? You seem to be upset by that.

There's nothing wrong with differences of opinion, since everyone is entitled to have their own here. However, your starting a thread hoping for Flood to be retained for another year after Rutgers' final game meltdown to Maryland, in which you called a large portion of the fanbase "anti-Floodites", was over the top.

I don't recall starting a thread like that. But I have used anti-Floodites, that's true. Is that the "over the top" part, or was it that I felt he should get another year, notwithstanding the Maryland game? It seems that feeling he didn't deserve to be fired is enough for some to attack me and the other 15%.

With regards to Slyker, my issues always revolved around his insistence that Laviano was the right guy, even when he was less than productive. I frequently said that it wasn't that I wanted Laviano replaced per se, but thought the other guy should be given an opportunity before minutes left in the fourth.

His defense to the arguments was mind numbing, but everyone has an opinion, so be it.

But to YOUR last point, I don't want any problems, real or imagined. For now, I am choosing to be wholly optimistic; but we'll see what the season holds. I definitely sense that Ash seems more organized (or focused); definitely a different vibe.

You need thicker skin if you want to post on the RU board without getting your feelings hurt

The day he lost me was the irresponsible contact with a professor when he was advised not to make contact. Hard to enforce rules when you place yourself above them, in my opinion. AND, he put himself out there for a player who didn't care enough to help himself; hard to go the extra mile when the kid doesn't care about his own education. Definitely ODD!!

I'm of 2 minds on this.

I was very disappointed he risked himself like that for a single player who had had more than his share of chances. As a head coach, you cannot save everyone. And the attempt at doing it incognito was just silly.

On the other hand, I know that other head coaches at Rutgers have had direct contact with professors. At one RU event I had a professor talking animatedly with me about how they communicate often with this particular head coach about how their players are doing. Even though this was significantly before the issue with Flood and Barnwell came up, I was a little surprised at the time that this coach was so blatant in checking in on their players. Particularly since the athletic department is supposed to have a whole support staff for that.

I understand, but I got the impression from Flood's response to the academic findings that he had a defense for the contact but was holding his tongue. I don't think we heard his side of the story. As for helping the student, I don't know how anyone can say the kid didn't care about his education. One of the reasons that I liked Flood is that he seemed to care for his players a lot and that they liked him both as a coach and a person. At any rate, Ash is here and it's a new day for RU, so I'm pulling for him just like everyone else.

If what I've read is accurate, he was failing DANCE APPRECIATION! Pretty sure you would need to work harder at failing that class than you would to pass. Plus, how many chances did that particular player get.

BUT, hats off to Flood for caring; just think his actions were misguided.

Hopefully Dance Appreciation is easier than Music Appreciation. I took the latter, thinking I would walk in, someone would ask if I would like to hear some music, I would say sure, I'd appreciate that, and get an A. Actually having to study for the class surprised me.

Let them attack. It's message-board S&M. I get off on it. [laughing]
