Best case he RS's but. I have no doubt he is given a chance. I'm hoping shortly after signing day we announce a 5th year or JUCO

Unless a QB is demonstrably better in his freshman year - and this kid could be, in this offense, in particular - redshirting is the way to go. A year on the sidelines learning and a year in the weight room getting stronger are good things for a QB.

I would like to see what the current QBs can do in this system. If they can't adjust they might not be here for long. That said it wouldn't hurt him to red shirt but Ash probably informed him he will be given an opportunity to start this summer but will red shirt him if he win the starting job.

Redshirting is ideal, if it can happen. Gives him time to get stronger and more flexible which will improve his odds of avoiding injuries. Gives him time to learn the new offense. Gives him time to acclimate to school and learn how to learn in college.

Human nature makes us all want everything now. But a little patience often goes a very long way.

We're not in a position to redshirt. If he brings anything to the table he will play this year. You assume that we will recruit at least one QB every year moving forward. Now reason to sit him. If the other QBs can't run the system they will deal with the growing pains with TO

I like how guys that have already committed are still showing up this weekend for a visit. It may just set the tone and rub off on the guys that are undecided.

Your summation should occur on the evening of LOI day. Then we will all have our moment of clarity..

Hopefully, Rettig turns out to be a star and starts for the next 2 years and Oden takes over during his RS sophomore year. He then turns into the real deal.

Notwithstanding the board's love affair with Rettig, it will bode best for this season if Laviano is the starter come September, because he has won the job outright, and convinced the new staff that he simply has to play. If you get rid of all the external nonsense, it is always ideal to have the most experienced QB be the best on the team.

Question.. Can Odin play this season or is he likely to RS
If he's the best qb to run the offense, he'll probably start, otherwise he'll rs. Not sure what I'm rooting for since it could mean if he starts it's because he's spectacular or our other qbs can't run our new offense even if he's not ideally ready. And if he sits, it's either he's really not ready at all or another qb is great. Either way could be a good or bad indication about our qbs.

Think I'm rooting for him to gain a little, be spectacular and for there to still be a qb controversy since someone steps up.

I know fans boo'ed Laviano a lot, but if he didn't have his moments, where he seemed like a douche, I would have no problem if he played, if he was actually the best quarterback for the job.

Because he reacted poorly to fan criticism, even if the coaching staff has him start, I don't think I will be as ecstatic as opposed to if, for instance, Rettig started. I will support it because that's what is best for the team, but before then, I will quietly be rooting for Rettig, Gio, Dare, or Oden.

Given Laviano's skill set, is there a chance he thrives in this new offense? He does have the ability to run. Hopefully we can do better over time, but his on field experience will be helpful in the interim.

Many may not like it, but Laviano might be the best to run the new offense, not counting incoming candidates.... Ash won't care what fans think, if Laviano seems more poised and mobile in practice...

The opinion of some who have observed practices before Ash seem to think so also, at this point in time.

We really should redshirt Oden, but even knowing that, we would like to see him play..... I understand the want and hope of getting Oden on the field.

It's too much to ask a true freshman to step in at QB and run an offense smoothly. I'd give Rettig and laviano an opportunity to show what they can do in this offense ( recall Ash &co. thought Russo could run this offense) before throwing Odin into the mix. Give him a red shirt year to grow, learn the offense , and most of all acclimate himself to college , especially if he's serious about pursuing a chem E degree. Finally , next year will be a transitional year for Ash to get his offense and defense in place , have a solid year to recruit , and begin making a path to success. So why burn a year of Odin's eligibility?

I agree that he is probably going to be the front runner to start. It's unfortunate for him that he, along with Kyle flood, are symbols of last year which is one we would all like to forget. Nevertheless, the coaches need the best people to run their system and if it is laviano then it is laviano.

Redshirting I thought does not teach our offense. Won't he be put on scout team Nd learn every other offense? That's how Rettig redshirt went.

It will be interesting to see how Laviano does entering this season without the opportunity to throw to Carroo. With a new coach and a totally clean slate for everything, I think whoever wins the job will be supported by the fans. Laviano may be that guy. Rettig may be that guy. Or Russo or someone else. But let's not kid ourselves, one significant reason why Laviano was not loved by many is because it did not seem like he won a true QB competition. It seemed like he was Flood's pick long before the "competition" began. And even when he struggled big-time, there was virtually no chance Flood would pull him. I don't think that any of the QBs will find themselves in that situation with Ash.

He won't run Scout team for ALL of fall camp, with the exception of the last ten days or so before the 1st game. Also, even when running Scout Team the Coaches can still teach footwork, pointing the front shoulder, route concepts, defensive alignments, etc...and lastly...he wouldn't be running any Scout Team for Spring Practice.

Winning in the B1G East with a raw true freshman QB is nearly impossible IMO. As good a QB as Braxton Miller was he led us to the worst record OSU had in 60 years as a true frosh. IMO you red-shirt this kid, take the "savior" pressure off his back at the risk of playing him, him being highly unsuccessful, and obliterating the kids confidence. Let him come in and get used to being a College Freshman 1st. Let him make some mistakes in practice( That coaches can correct and use as teachable moments), let him get used to the Speed of Big-Time D1 Football, then unleash him on the world the following Spring when he's had a chance for Kenny Parker to beat the hell out of him for 7 months.

Simply my opinion but I really like this kid and hope he does well. With the exception of 1 Sat. every year...

-----------
some of our qb's had a hard time learning a college play book.... we are then asking a 17 or 18 year old fresh out of high school to run a complicated offense.... yes, it does happen here and there, but not an easy task..... if a frosh qb is sitting on the sidelines watching for a year
he is learning that way, and also in practice.

My post was a bit of a backhanded comment at old staff. I was so annoyed last year when they were saying he never learned our playbook because he wasn't eligible.

With that said a school like Rutgers is different from Ohio State. Let's be honest the chance of us winning the Big Ten this year is way below 5%. From a new staff years 3-4 are where the pressure starts. So the downside isn't as big letting him learn on the job. Now if he isn't physically developed enough as some have said is a different story.

I get what you're saying bud. But, if you look at my post, I didn't mention winning the Big 10. I said winning IN the B1G East. I agree you won't win the Big 10 this year, but there's absolutely no reason why you can't be competitive this year. In fact, I think it's paramount that you give the 2017 class the impression that things are exciting and looking bright moving forward. You can have a crappy record but still look like progress is being made.

The question you have to ask is this...does Oden give you the best chance at being competitive and impressing the 2017 NJ kids, or do you risk playing him and he has a couple stinkers as all true frosh QB's have, then recruits start questioning if Oden is really gonna be the guy moving forward. Especially with Offensive skill postion players...

At least with the other 2 guys, if they go out and play ok, but have a couple bad games, you can tell recruits..." you should see Oden on Scout Team...he's killing it...gonna be a great one...come catch passes or run the ball for this guy..."

Kinda a rambling post but does this make sense? Lol...

Read some of the Odin's comments regarding his conversation with Ash and it sounds like red shirt is likely but he will certainly have an opportunity to compete
