We simply cannot have a repeat of last year on special teams. Smolar seemed like a good kicking prospect but he couldn't beat out Bonagura last year. Punting was horribly inconsistent and below average. THIS is a big concern.

Well when you get outscored 900-30 I'd focus on the O and the D first. But that's just me.

well our scoring isn't gonna go up when we can't kick field goals, and our defense is gonna give up more points when we punt 30 yards each time, and give up field position. Also why can't we also get special teasers, there is no salary cap.

The focus is always on the O and D first with recruiting. The problem arises when you can't recruit a kicker or punter at all. We can't even get a kicker on scholarship.

It's Rutgers, how are you still surprised by this kind of stuff?

We've had competent kickers and punters every year for a long time now except this past year. It's unacceptable. I won't accept FCS quality special teams and you shouldn't either.

Well we can accept it or not but we're Rutgers - and these things happen to us - a lot.

Our program was moderately successful for a decent amount of time before the past two years. Remember when we were an annual bowl team? Sure, things happened to us but we were still a competent football program. I don't want that to go in the shitter as well.

Brad Robbins (punter) is a Nevada commit...Wonder if we go after him because of Erb

Seeing who the mods here follow on Twitter does give some clues into recruiting haha

I think the staff is good with the current punting game. I know of a college punter that was interested in transferring in as a walk on and was basically told no thanks.

Let' s stop the BS and get a schollie kicker/punter. Got to be one somewhere amount the thousands of HS programs.

Why not give schollies to kicker/punter. We gave a qb scollie to an 18 year
who we knew couldn't throw, but we thought that was not important.
Then another, that his team made a wide receiver be cause HE couldn't
throw. If we throw away scholarships like that, then give it to a kicker
that might have walked on somewhere else. Then we gave away $450,000
to a guy who made these decisions.

We have made offers to two kickers so far this year.

For those who can remember: bring back the 2-kicker system. A straight-on toe kicker for kicks less than 40 yards. Soccer style kicker for longer than 40 yards and kickoffs. Recruit the straight on toe kicker from someone in the stands who used to kick straight on when he played in his neighborhood or high school team 30 years ago and can still kick up to 40 yards and hasn't used his eligibility. Or hold an open try-out for toe kickers.

Maybe your friend doesn't have the credentials they're looking for?

Many teams have that WITHOUT putting them on scholarship.

True, but most of them already have a good kicker and punter so offering a PWO to the recruits works for them. We have no kicking game at all and we need someone to come in and kick immediately. If that means giving them schollies then do it.

Bonagura is very accurate from 40 yards in on FG's (90%). He just doesn't have the leg strength much past that or on kickoffs. Neither does Smolar. RU gave away an average of 6 yards on kickoffs compared to the competition. That's a pretty big difference before you even consider return yardage.

I never thought recruiting a solid punter and kicker would be so difficult. Perhaps the S&C coach could work with our existing Punter and Kicker.

special teams were a joke last season..punting was horrible..kickoffs couldnt reach the end zone. The kid DAY has now verballed elsewhere and was the number one RU target up to last week..

His FG attempts from inside the 40, much like his PAT's, are scary to watch. Every, single one of them, unfortunately.

He was the "#1 target" for a SLEW of schools and committed to a school not far from home (Mississippi State) instead of one worlds away. Not sure how long you've been a Rutgers football fan but my guess is not too long? Not putting you down, don't get me wrong, but we haven't had a kicker who could consistently put the ball in the end zone in a very, very long time. Nothing new here, unfortunately, but a few of them could, at the very least, put the ball to about the 5 and outside of the hashes on a consistent basis. The last few years? Brutal.

Dude, we punted from the opponents 29 yard line this year. In the B1G this was beyond embarassing. This shouldnt even be a question.... give a legit kicker a schollie.
