Sources: SEC, Big Ten building momentum to further expand College Football Playoff to 14 or 16 teams

The National Championship had no juice because it was too late and conflicted with NFL playoffs.

They will suck the life out of NCAA football until it's the NBA and nobody cares.

16 and no BYES is the way they need to go... however they will choose 14 with BYES and some convoluted system. My guess is SEC and ESPN really wants the same 12-team system but more ability for SEC to get teams in. Justification to leave out others.. like drop the conference champion thing in favor of the rankings that they have more influence over.

I said it when the BigXII, Pac 12 and Big Ten talked about having their own championship because the SEC was being recalcitrant in negotiating a playoff expansion.. F'orget the SEC and ESPN if SEC insists on BYEs.

But I also suggest having early season OOC games scheduled by some independent mediator-type organization to establish some kind of basis of comparison between conferences. Schools scheduling their own opponents doesn't produce a lot of interesting or unique early season matchups. Perhapos it should be like basketball where you have all these early season tourneys.. but a football version of that.

Nah - I don’t think it will be that bad on average. The gap isn’t to the extent of a 1/16 game in March Madness. Upsets will be pretty rare but it won’t be that often that you get games like this years Super Bowl. Most of the time the better team will pull away down the stretch. But there will be a good number more late regular season games that will have bubble implications that draw more viewer interest than they otherwise would.
When a #16 beats a #1 team I'll believe you. They won't put toothpaste back in the tube but the perfect number was 8. Now they have add more lessor teams to fix their mistake.

So no more At-Large (since it’s guaranteed to ND)?

What if the 5th best Big Ten team is better than the 2nd best ACC?

How about a 2nd G5 team better than the 2nd Big 12 team?

Also - no more committee?
How are they judging the teams - conference record?
What about the G5 teams?
We’re back to the AP Poll deciding?
There will either be 1(14) at large or 3(16) at large.

In the 14, it goes to ND automatically if they are a top 14. Even if the 5th place SEC is ahead of them

In a 16 team, with 3 at larges, the scenario that i see happening is the 6th place SEC or B10 being better on paper than the 2nd place ACC or Big12. In that case, i am ok with the 2nd place team getting in.

But in the 14 team.... you will see that a lot

Expansion to 14 is idiotic. There are 4 rounds. Max it out at 16. Byes are really unfair in my opinion for football. There are not enough games to objectively compare two resumes and make a decision as massive as that. An extra game when there are only 12 games to begin with is a very big deal. Everyone in the playoffs should play the same number of games. At least in my opinion.

Get rid of the whole playoff nonsense and go back to the New Years Bowl Games meaning something. Let people argue over who is the national championship. College football should end on New Year's Day. The goal should be making a New Years Day Bowl - that used to be celebrated. College football should not be the NFL. They have destroyed the tradition of the game.

My opinion ( that no one agrees with) again
Give every conference champion an auto bid and an auto spot for every independent in the top 5.
Highest ranked independent in top 15 gets an auto spot if there isn't one in top 5 tal=king one of the 7 at large spots
Have a 16 team playoff with the top ranked team playing the lowest and so on and so on and Scooby-dooby-do.
Make winning a conference championship mean something and still have enough spots for top teams that didn't.

Treat every team and conference in the same league....equally????

There is no place for equality in college athletics!

I think the B10 wants the AQs to also limit the SEC at least short term.

By taking 4 and giving 2 each to ACC and Big12, plus the G5, that leaves 1 spot to ND and caps the SEC at 4.
Hence why it appears that the SEC is pushing for 16 teams vs 14 team.

B10 wants 14 team.... do 1v2, 3v6, 4v5 for the 4 AQs

SEC is looking to push it to 16 teams.... do 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5 for the 4 AQs... If their #1 or #2 teams lose, they will probably get in anyway as 1 of the 3 at larges.

An expansion will further water down the meaning of the results of regular season games. One good thing about this season was 3-loss Bama and Ole Miss type teams were not rewarded for their far from stellar seasons. Congrats to tOSU for a great Dec/Jan run.
That OSU team was very hard to figure out - especially during the regular season. They lost to Oregon and Michigan when they were a 20 point favorite against Michigan. And another one to remember, Nebraska had OSU on the ropes and could have very easily won that game. Then the Playoffs came and the lights went on. And boy did the lights come on. That Michigan loss might have pissed them off. That OSU team was just too deep and talented to lose any games in 2024

Did you just come out of a 20 year coma? Dude, that ship has sailed long ago.

America disagrees. The bowls are stupid compared a real playoff. Yes, we now have a real playoff. Not perfect, but still great.

Interest in the regular season was up because more teams are in the mix.

I like the playoff system , but would like it better with if all conference champions were playing in it.
Bowl games are nice, as well, for programs that are shut out of playoffs and had winning seasons for their players and fans to enjoy.
But participants must have winning records , in my opinion, 6-6 or worse doesn't make it in my book.

That might mean some years the number of bowl games would be less than usual and other years the full amount would be played.
Bowl conference ties would fill most of the games then it would be catch and catch can for the rest of the bowls picking the teams that qualified to be in a bowl.
If there's an odd number of teams with winning records, one gets left out rather than bring in a 6-6 program full of Rhodes Scholars to fill the last bowl spot.
