Sports Illustrated: The Big Ten Revival

"Investments require capital, and two of the conference's apparent cash grabs—the creation of the Big Ten Network, and the 2014 addition of Rutgers and Maryland—changed the trajectory of the league."

"Rutgers and Maryland are nobody's idea of national football powers, but when the Big Ten proclaimed that they expanded the conference's "footprint," it was not just TV jargon. The league's recruiting base expanded in crucial ways. Michigan's two highest-rated recruits in recent years, do-everything Jabrill Peppers and defensive lineman Rashan Gary, are from New Jersey. Ohio State's dynamic receiver Curtis Samuel is from New York City."

Interesting point:
"Big Ten schools have a habit of hiring coaches who don't need a campus map. Meyer is an Ohio native and former OSU graduate assistant. Michigan's Jim Harbaugh is a UM alum and Ann Arbor native. Wisconsin's Paul Chryst is a UW alum, former Badgers assistant and Madison native. Michigan State's Mark Dantonio was an assistant in East Lansing under Nick Saban. Penn State coach James Franklin grew up in Langhorne, Pa. Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald is a former Northwestern star and assistant. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz was a Hawkeyes assistant."

They gave an example of Kevin Wilson failing at Indiana as an outsider. In Rutgers' case however, think it was a matter of familiarity and using Jersey guys had not gotten us to the next level. I like the fact that we went outside of the Jersey roots coaches and got a coach who had experience at multiple winning programs (Wisconsin, Arkanasas and Ohio State).

My takeaway is the resurgence of the Big 10 directly correlates with the addition of RU to the league.

This was the expectations and you are seeing the rewards for all parties. The B1G is seeing greater revenue already we we are seeing an investment in the type of facilities that you see in other great schools. I got an opportunity to get a look at alot of the facilities when I went to OSU. The BB facility and the practice fields are going to be top notch additions and the Lacrosse soccer facility will rival or be better than any program in the B1G include Hopkins facility. I spoke with Hobbs last spring at the B1G championship game held at Hopkins and he said that he has been their the day before meeting and talking to the people at Hopkins about there new facility (2 years old) and on of the questions he asked them as well as everyone else was what would you have done differently. I feel like we are in a really good place and all of the new buildings will make the school much more attractive to both students and athletes

It also doesn't hurt that they brought in 2 punching bags like RU and Maryland to help inflate the win column for the top teams...

The article is a bit hypocritical in that on the one hand it says we want all of our teams to be able to invest in their programs and that's why we share the money, but on the other side they aren't allowing the newcomers to do so and instead the newcomers keep getting further and further behind. I get that we had to have the buy in, but the revenues seem to have exceeded everyone's expectations, and now the gap between the haves and have nots WITHIN the conference is at ridiculous revenues. It's because of this unanticipated growth in the gap that buy in period should be revisited.

But the revenues have not exceeded expectations. If anything, the figures shared by Maryland at the time of the invite are pretty much in exact alignment with the new TV deals.

We really need to stop complaining about our conditions after being invited into the greatest conference in college sports

Remember theoretically both the top teams n the league as well as the traditional patsys arguably suffer a potential opportunity cost with the addition of RU and Maryland. RU and Maryland could theoretically become the top two teams in the league-or be a disaster and not bring in the additional revenue expected.

not sure how anyone can say, 'getting screwed on the buy in' and be taken seriously

Do you have a point or do you want to remain unsure? I felt we could have negotiated better terms when we joined. We wanted in and negotiated that way, instead of negotiating from the perspective that they wanted us and the NYC market. Maybe you don't understand the time value of money and how far behind we will be in 2021.

Do you think revenue did not go up 1/7 with the addition of RU and Md, more content and way more eyeballs? I know the argument is the BTN network but that is way less valuable than we are paying in. According to the link below it generates about $1 million per year per team.

Yup, RU and Md bringing in the eyeballs and revenue but getting screwed on the "buy in".

So ****ing what? In a few years we're going to be earning about $45M/year from the B1G. Think about that! We were earning about $11M/year, on average, the last few years in the Big East/AAC. We're making about $16M/year in the B1G right now, IIRC, which is STILL more than what we would have been making in that shithole of a conference.

I honestly don't understand why some don't get this. SMH

Good Lord...

I know everyone thinks they're Gordon Ghecko but we had no leverage in this negotiation. Our current home at the time was destroyed. Pitt, WVU, Va Tech, Cuse, Miami and BC were all gone already. TCU joined the conference and left before even playing a game. We were drowning.

The B1G didn't throw us a life vest, they pulled up in a yacht and welcomed us in.

Also keep in mind that we were "in" a few years earlier, that is until we weren't. Nebraska took our seat at the table right as we were about to sit down. Now imagine we played hard ball and a different school like Notre Dame had a change of heart and decided to come on board with Maryland.

Then the ACC backfills with UCONN and we are left playing a fall slate of USF, Tulane, Tulsa, Temple, and god knows who else is in that league.

All because we overplayed our KJ offsuit thinking we had aces.

I'm guessing there may be different agendas at work. The B1G as a conference wants parity but when push comes to shove, the bean counters at individual universities only care about their own bottom line. It's Delany's job to find the middle ground

Pils, the argument wasn't Finance-it was logic-Rutgers was on the outside looking in and there was a major threat to all of our football program, sports program AND UNIVERSITY AS A WHOLE as our sports program at that point was losing as much money as any team in the country.

Rutgers DID offer TV sets (especially with an big upside to our football and basketball programs) and Bob Mulcahy was seemingly smart to have hired a "hired gun" in former TV ex and ex RU football player Tim Pernetti (otherwise in my experience a pretty poor person and could care less about anything other than football) to land us in the B1G-or else.

Rutgers didn't have much leeway in negotiating. If any other school was chosen for the B1G it could have been death for our football program and possibly more. UCONN (with all of their National Championships in Men's and Women's basketball was a distinct possibilty to take RUs spot.

The object of admission to the B1G was foremost about balancing the sports budget (deficit) and supporting the ungodly amount of Division 1 programs we do. Apparently now we've hit a home run and in the infamous words of Piscataway Mike's brother (discussing all related here including future "losing") we're (Rutgers Football and sports) RELEVANT.

That is right. OSU and Michigan were doing backflips when Rutgers agreed to join BECAUSE we and Maryland would bring in boatloads of CASH. If it wasn't for that, neither of use would have gotten invited. Let's keep it real, Rutgers and Maryland are not powerhouses in football. We can become powerhouses thanks to being in the Big Ten but that's not the point. They don't care if that ever happens, we as fans do of course.

For Rutgers, we would have been completely screwed in the AAC. Slowly dying until perhaps dropping to FCS.

It seems like many people can't see the forest for the trees, you have to look at the big picture. Once we are fully vested, we are fully vested for life. By the time we get to that 1st year we would had made more than many AAC schools put together. Afterwards almost as much if not more than some entire Group of Five conferences combined by ourselves!

Keep your eyes on the prize my friends.

Well, what other school gives them this market? That's leverage and we didn't use it. Understand the desperation we were in but they HAD to have Rutgers and seven years is just way too long to try and compete with the monsters in this conference with a $30 million income disparity. Should have said "immediate full membership or not interested." Would have settled at three or four years.

That would have been a slap to the face of Nebraska. They are a much bigger name in college ports than we are.

It amazes me that some still don't get it: there was NO negotiating going on. None. They told us what we were getting and, as we should have at that time, we jumped all over the opportunity. That's it! Sure, they wanted the presence, and we WERE their top choice but they COULD have told us to "f* off," too, and grabbed a UConn God-forbid. Let that sink in for a moment.

Rutgers should focus on other sports besides football and men's basketball, but don't tell anyone about our plans.

In the short term, the Big Ten has gained far more from the addition of Rutgers than Rutgers has gained from being added to the Big Ten. But we had no choice if we wanted a future in big time college athletics and we have been given the opportunity, however limited by the buy in, of raising our profile. In the end, though, conference matters but it's not enough. A school has to raise itself.

It was our Kevin Bacon moment, but the money isn't why we're not competitive, it's because Schiano left and we hired a caretaker...

We're probably hurting their strength of schedule more than helping them right now.

Mulcahy hired Pernetti. Uh sure.
