student section.

Listen. I am far from a flood apologist. But for this to be the student section at a BIG school is terrible. Regardless of record or the head coach.

Wait to see what that looks like two weeks from now. At least the band was miked up today, and we can actually hear them from the other end of the stadium, because Lord knows I couldn't all the season.

Team is playing like cat yak. How can you fault anyone for not going?. Keep flood any this is what you will get.

I agree. I get we are bad, but barely 1500 students showing up for a 3:30pm game against a National Power with rich tradition like Nebraska is a joke. I would have understood if 10k came, and then left as we got down 21-0, but to never show up, that can not entirely be blamed on our record or Flood. We were an 8 point underdog, and this game was 21-14 at one point. Do you think an extra 8000 students may have helped? Terrible job by students, and I am not a Flood supporter.

Bottom Line, I would rather see Rutgers give away 8000 tickets to kids than to see 8000 empty seats where our students should be. Sorry, Flood or no Flood, its a disgrace. Everyone here knows its a disgrace.

I am in no way blaming students nor suggesting they have anything to do with the state of our program, but come on, our students need to show up to Games against teams like Nebraska.

I know plenty of middle-aged fans who were there today mostly for the opportunity to tailgate with friends. Without that many of them wouldn't have bothered coming to today's game. Since RU ruined the tailgating experience for the students you get today what many of the students who post here told you would happen if the team became uncompetitive. No surprise to me.

this all revolves around our team and specifically Flood sucking. There is no more buzz anymore. Students don't want to come see a team get blown out. Cannot blame them at all. As good as the students are for big games they still are not all that into following sports here

This excuse has been blown up a million different ways. But lets just say the students under 21 have to tailgate elsewhere. Getting to the game may be slightly more inconvenient and may take a little longer, but please for 1500 to show up for Nebraska? And you want to blame that on RU not wanting underage students to drink in the parking lots?

This is kinda what I am talking about! So unless we have a winning record we should expect 8000 students to have no interest in going to a game against a National Power, with a rich history like Nebrask? A 3:30 pm start on a saturday? This is a problem. And it could be the same thing next year with a different coach.

Think about what you are saying here.

Stop with the damn student section. This is what happens when you have an administration that tells them to tailgates miles away from the stadium instead of the blue lot. It's the tenth game of the season and the coach has this team playing worse and worse. Teams with losing records don't attract students. End of story.

It's been blown up a million different ways by old people. Find me the students who agree with you. If you refuse to listen to what they have to say then don't be surprised when they tune you and the the team out.

My Nephew who goes to Rutgers says its BS. I am not refusing to listen to them, never said that or implied that. But RU doesn't want underage drinking in the parking lots, unless we go back to that, I don't know the solution. Would love to hear the solution the students propose.

And again, not knocking students or blaming them in any way for the state of our program, but 1500 showing up for a BIG 10 game, against Nebraska is problem. Remember, they didn't show up and leave when it was 21-0, they never showed up.

What is your solution? What is the student's solution? I am being sincere, would love to hear it?

Allow them to tailgate in the f'ing blue lot. I went to homecoming and tailgated on College ave the past two years. After two hours of drinking the last thing a lot of people want to do it grab a bus to get to the game. I didn't even go to the Kansas game this year. I never missed a game when I was a student. I can understand why students miss games when they are tailgating at house parties on freaking guilden street. Seriously, the AD has no idea what the students are doing before the game. If she saw, she would realize that this is completely moronic to have the students drinking this far from the stadium

I don't know how connected you are with current students but as a recent graduate I still have a lot of friends at RU. I would say that more than 75% of students do not care about college football. If you polled all the students, I can guarantee you that 75% of them could not name more than 1 or 2 players outside of Carroo, Laviano, & Rettig. Just because a school has a football program does not automatically mean students should show up to games. <-- To many of you that is going to sound crazy but I hope you know that is the truth.

Students go to the game to tailgate, drink and have fun. They show up in numbers during big games because they feel like it would be a good show. If the buzz around the game is not there then the general consensus is that it's just another game and not really worth their time to show up. Its the same concept of people buying tickets to go see their favorite bands in concert. They go to see a great show. Not everyone has to like RU Football as much as we do on this board.

To expect students to come to a game as if it some sort of responsibility or mandatory event is ridiculous!

So how do we get students to come then, you ask? Well get them interested in college football, make them proud of Rutgers Football (noticed how I say RUFB and not Rutgers, there's a difference), or just create a great show. I showed up to most of my games because I was proud of RUFB, but that was just me...everyone is different.

Riot squad should change their names to the joke squad

Except we're the ones that were there, first row, after plenty of paying fans already left, and before a lot of paying fans arrived. We're not the whole student section, not yet.

Damn....and I just bought the Riot Squad All winter hats!!!!!

And we appreciate them! Can't wait to come deliver yours next week!

This was easily the worst student turn-out of the year. And I don't blame them. I could've found a lot more enjoyable things to do today than go to that game. But I already paid for season tickets. If I'm a student with no money involved, I'm not going either.

The bottom line is put a decent team on the field and we'll pack the house. But continue to neglect the program by hiring bargain-basement coaches, and you'll go right back to the 90's. Mulcahy turned this program around by getting the money to hire a hot-shot defensive co-ordinator from a National Championship-winning program. Until Rutgers is ready to do that again, instead of shopping in the dumpster of Division II and and non-power 5 coaches, we should prepare for a return to the dark ages.

But the football program's subsidy will be reduced so we've got that to look forward to.

Wisconsin's had a handful of games where the student section was pretty bad too. Let's not act like every school in the B1G packs the student section every game and Rutgers doesn't.

- MSU had "tons" empty last year? They had seen a decrease, for weak games and/or early starts, but nothing crazy.

- Illinois is awful, but, I've sat in student section, when they're playing well, and it's huge and fun.

- Wiscy student section holds 14,000 so even at 75% full, which is incredibly rare, they have 10,500 there. Typically they just arrive very late, however, fill it up by mid 2nd quarter.

- PSU and Mich have 22,000 and 23,000 student sections that are typically packed. OIRC OSU is 28k, always full, and I'm not sure of Iowa's size but hardly ever an empty seat. Nebraska? NEVER an empty seat and Minny has been pretty much full the last few years. Maryland, IU, PU, very fickle like our kids.

...that being said I was surprised there were THAT many students there today lol.

How do you address the underage drinking issue. Ignore it? Don't think that is an option for RU.

I expect students to of a BIG 10 show up for a 3:30pm game with a National Power like Nebraska with a rich football history.

I then have no issue if you want to leave at 21-0, but at least show up!!!!!!!! LOL

Why do you expect them to show up? I dont understand why students must be at a football game? What is this obligation you keep implying

I dunno, I think the students were all just planning how they are gonna pack the RAC for basketball season.

What is your solution? What is the student's solution? I am being sincere, would love to hear it?

The problem is multi faceted. Firstly, it's obvious that the football teams piss-poor performance during the last four games has sapped any buzz for remaining games, so forget about students coming to watch an entertaining show or expecting quality football.

Here is the problem with your logic (and I'll propose a solution as well). Many students enjoy hanging out with their friends, eating good food, listening to good music and having a drink. Tailgating encompasses all of that. The police crackdown on underage drinking in the Busch lots (to absurd levels, by which I mean very few in the quiet Blue Lot even looked under 21 today and numerous police were still approaching tailgates asking for ID) has effectively driven them to College Ave. This doesn't just include the students who want to drink/pregame, but also all their friends who would even consider attending football games as social functions. To add insult to injury, these students are or will be graduating soon, and as young alumni will simply continue the trends already started. The effect on lot atmosphere and student/young alumni atmosphere was readily apparent today.

As for solutions: the status quo, which involves students tailgating on College Avenue and attempting to make it to the stadium by bus, is clearly not working. And no amount of attendance shaming or guilting them on using distance as an excuse not to bother making it to games will change anything. First, I'd propose the creation of a designated tailgating area on Busch campus for students/young alumni that isn't mandated "dry". It can realistically be in the unused northwest portion of the Blue Lot or elsewhere (but not by the Green Lot or Werblin, since those locations have previously failed) as needed. Keep law enforcement and emergency services on the periphery, ready to respond to safety issues and medical emergencies as needed. To pay for this, charge frats, energy drink trucks, students, etc. to park there and set up as desired. Secondly, the school can and should use its influence in paying law enforcement overtime in order to redistribute forces as needed. The focus should be on vehicular traffic control and providing for public safety by responding to theft, assault, public urination, etc., rather than racking up ticketing dollars by harassing younger-looking people in the lots.

Okay, that's all I got.

Students section What a joke! Awful performance!

Over 400,000 RU Alumni .... What a joke (you single out the students for not showing up... What about alums, it is after all Nebraska, rich in history and tradition)

The following step would be for there to be a greatly reduced student section due to lack of interest.

What is so hard to understand about this sentence: Rutgers Football is a joke and not entertaining to watch. As soon as you understand and grasp that fact you will understand that people have other stuff to do than sit outside and watch a non-competitive football game. It's great that you still want to show up to the game and root on the team. Very few other people will choose to do that over spending their weekend with their friends. It is not a them problem, it is a "we suck" problem.

I do not blame the students even a little bit. Flood has sucked any excitement out of this sport and it will continue if he is not shown the door.
