Why aren't our guys wrestling in the RTC this weekend? Big article on the Flo site praising the boys from New Jersey and Reece Humphrey.

Expectations around the NJRTC/SERTC squad at this weekend’s RTC Cup are understandably measured after it was seemingly put together like a jigsaw puzzle of wrestlers from the New Jersey, Southeast and Lehigh Valley RTC’s. To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what to even call them. NJRTC/SERTC feels like a mouthful but it seems we have no choice.

Friday, Dec 4 - Saturday, Dec 5

In the last week or two, a few other participating clubs capitalized on the “free agent” caveat by adding wrestlers of their own in attempt to provide some additional firepower to their teams. With that said, the NJRTC/SERTC team is the only one made up of wrestlers from three different training centers.
Representation from the NJRTC may be limited this weekend, but the Garden State’s presence will surely still be felt. Here’s why.
The Coach
In the last few years, the NJRTC has rapidly grown into an attractive destination for prospective athletes both in and out of college. Not only is it a room full of high-level wrestlers located at the heart of one of the sport’s hotbeds, but it just looks like a fun team to be a part of. The program and the wrestlers continue to do such an excellent job with branding and promotion that it’s no surprise to see NJRTC wrestlers scattered across wrestling cards throughout the country in the past few months.
Much of that is a reflection of USA Wrestling’s Freestyle Coach of the Year and NJRTC head coach Reece Humphrey.
Humphrey’s youthful energy is contagious and has led to one of the highest approval ratings of anyone in American wrestling. We often hear the term “player’s coach” get thrown around in other sports to describe coaches with a keen ability to connect with their athletes. Humphrey is a player’s coach. He is the type of coach that guys like to have in their corner. The result has been a team united in its support for one another. He expects his wrestlers to feed off of that support this weekend.

I think Kanniard, Janzer, and Shawver should all (hopefully) win easily. I don't know much about their opponents, especially in freestyle, but none of them are very impressive in folkstyle (or at least had any success at the college level). They could be much better in freestyle, but that is TBD.
  • Shawver's opponent went 3-8 last year, but only 1-6 to D1 opponents.
  • Janzer's opponent was 2-4 last year, but only 1-4 vs. D1 opponents.
  • Kanniard's opponent who is RS-SR went 20-8 (14-8 vs. D1) but wasn't a starter and only really wrestled in open tournaments. In 2019 he was 7-17 (5-17 vs. D1) as a starter in the UNC lineup.
Aguilar-Heilmann, Grello-Lautt, and Aguilar-Tagg should all be good matches against very high quality opponents as Lautt was a NQ and Tagg is a U.S. Open Junior Freestyle Champion as well as took bronze at the 2019 U.S. Junior World Championships.

Not sure what kind of wrestling shape Pagano is in currently but his opponent is a RS-FR who was 11-6 (8-4 vs D1 opponents) last year, so he doesn't seem like he would be much of a threat but again not sure what Pagano's fitness level is currently.

Also the under card matches are free and start at 6:30

Janzer: to win the whole thing

Kanniard and Janzer won and both pushed the offense. Kanniard had a nice late takedown to win and Janzer cruised to an easy tech. Shawver was aggressive and pushed the O but very sloppy trying to finish so he lost. Clean that up and he wins easily. Did Decatur even take a shot? All counters and no O. Pretty weak.

I saw the first two matches:

Kanniard won 9-6. He looked a little sluggish early but turned it on and got a nice takedown at the end.

Janzer won 10-0. He dominated from start to the finish.

Didn't see Shawver but it looks like he lost 6-4, was expecting more from him. Maybe someone else can chime in.

See above. He was aggressive and pushed the O but was sloppy finishing so he lost. He needs to cleanup his finishes and he'll be fine. Decatur did nothing but counters. I'm not sure he took 1 shot in 6 mins.

Gwiz coming back from 0-8 to win 18-8 against Parris was pretty crazy as well. He hit a 12 point move (which is absurd) with 5 laces to get right back into it in a matter of seconds.

Definitely one of my least favorite aspects of freestyle though

Someone did that to Ashnault lasts year. James Green maybe? Takedown into a leg lace for a 10-0 win in like 20 seconds.

It was Green and he did it to the young Cuban kid going to Ohio State. Looks like he hurt is knee as well like Ashnault. (Echemendi)

And the worst part is that it's really not that uncommon.
