Targum: Chris Laviano leads Rutgers offense in practice in day after being named starter

"The mirroring thing really works", said Rutgers QB Chris Laviano after being named starter and commenting on the similarities of his new look and Rutgers OC Drew Mehringer's look.

Laviano then added, "I am now looking for a little black dress and black leather jacket for Fashion Week"

So we have a starting qb who isn't 'game ready' yet . This knighted stuff is stupid at this point
It was stupid at all points... If flood did it people would be laughing about it now. Cut the gimmicks, win games

Laviano could be the least liked starting Qb at RU since the fan base turned on Tom Savage.Imho,he brought it on himself after last year's hissy fit about RU fans.

I remember when he was put back in and the fans boo'ed something crazy. The head shake by Laviano was classic.

At the end of the day, its not as though we hate Laviano. We hate that we don't have a QB. Laviano is starting because there just isn't anyone else who can get it done. Seriously. We haven't had a QB since Savage and GS ruined him with the whacky snap offense. Nova showed glimpses of talent, but then would throw in a 5 pic day, completely losing the fan base.

We are soooo hung over with putrid QB play and having NO ONE off the bench that is even serviceable, Laviano is taking the beating.

Such as life as a Power 5 QB.

First of all I like it a lot. He is all about working hard and creating competition. Kudos.

If Flood did this in year 1 most fans would have been OK with it. Don't forget how excited this board was one he declared he would only use 1 QB. At that point many were killing Schiano and praising Flood. LOL

One thing I got from that article was we better temper expectations on Zach Allen. The kid is not a thrower. There's a reason he was over recruited, moved to wide receiver and then transferred out of TCU. I see Ash going through 3-4 qbs this season. Laviano can dink and dunk, Allen can run, Rettig can throw deep, Rescigno can..... I think Oden plays by mid season.

GO RU

We should just bite the bullet now and throw Oden in there and see what the kid has. Let him develop with real world experience. Other schools always seem to get away with playing true frosh QBs. Why not us?

I hope Laviano proves me wrong, but I feel like we are just wasting time going with him.

It is not too often you see a true frosh start game 1. I would put money it, that Oden starts the entire 2nd half of the season.

Then Ash has a recruiting pitch to keep this sick class together and land a few other hitters, "So we finished 6-6. We started true frosh Oden for the entire 2nd half. He is going to be rolling next season. We're on a path now in only one direction. Up. Are you going to be be apart of it and make 2006 look like just a pep rally to the real deal here in the Tri-State area?"

My Lord Oden will get broken in half by the 1st B1G D we play. Let the kid put some weight and (more) muscle on please!

The competition between Oden and Lewis next year will be unlike anything we've ever seen on the banks. Patients everyone. Lav named starter... gotta throw your support behind him and trust that in the event he stinks it up, Ash/Mehringer will make a change and give the team a chance.

but, but, but, but, but Teddy Bridgewater started as a Freshman. . . ..

I kind of agree with you, but I would not be surprised if we saw Oden get significant playing time this year, especially if none of the other QBs pan out. I am holding out hope that if Laviano does not get the job done, Gio emerges as the QB for 2016. But I think Laviano will do better than most people think, and it is a mistake to expect him to be the same QB he was last year. Hoping for a Gary Nova 2014 season without the PSU performance.

Look, while certainly not the norm, all I am saying is it can be done and has been done in the recent past with some pretty good success:

1. UCLA’s Josh Rosen (2015);
2. Miami’s Brad Kaaya (2014);
3. Cal’s Jared Goff (2013);
4. Washington’s Jake Browning (last year); and (of course)
5. Hackenberg

All of the above had pretty damn good years as true freshmen. Laviano is a waste of time. So, again, why not us??

Do you know if Oden can handle this? Just because these players could anecdotally, does not mean that Oden can.

No, I don't know he can handle it. I do know Laviano isn't going to take us to the promise land, though.
Got news for you. As a fan right behind Rutgersal wearing the most scarlet colored glasses, this team is not going to the promised land this year. I trust Chris Ash and his coaches that they have made the best choice giving us the best shot, and they will not hesitate to change things up if the QBs don't get the job done.

I assume you're kidding. Lots of small/skinny guys play every year without getting hurt. The reason he won't start is that he's not ready - if he were ready, I'd have no issue with his weight.

Teddy B was build like a brick shithouse when he was a frosh and was used in a pro-set O so a tad different IMHO.

I agree about the difference in offense, but Teddy's been in the league a few years and is still thin.

No, I'm not "kidding," putting him up against B1G Ds, in this type of offense, this year - in my opinion - is a bad idea. Let the kid beef up a little AND get ready, mentally, for the role. Absolutely zero need to rush him, again, in my most humble of opinions.

Who was the QB when we beat them under Anderson?
Come on Beaced it was Scott Erney and by the way he sucked in that game. We won that one on D and the running of Mike Biotti.

Oden isn't playing this year. If there was a chance, he would've been in the QB competition. I am not sure why some here seem to think Ash has some sort of secret plan to bring in Oden in the second half of this game or that, or this season, etc. What do you think he would gain by doing that? This isn't exactly a chess match. It's not like this will be the deciding factor as to whether or not we beat OSU or MSU.

If Laviano doesn't go, then it will be Allen. If he doesn't go, then it will be Rettig or Gio. Next year, on the other hand, is a different story.

Next time something good about Oden comes out of camp will be the first time.

If we were running the same offense as last year I would agree that Laviano isn't the right guy; however, with the new offense I'm willing to give him a shot. He did win what looks to be an honest QB competition. Flood lovers can say Laviano won an honest competition last year, but I still don't buy it. I do believe this year was honest though.

I also think he's got a very short leash and we will likely see 3-4 QBs see the field during the season.

Guys, just let it play out. Trust the staff. For the first time, we have all of the following:
  • a coaching staff that knows what it's doing and already exceeding expectations
  • an Athletic Director that is all in, for all sports, and bringing results from day one
  • a University President that has shaken off the shackles of his merger focus and supports athletics
We've got new facilities going up, a facelift for the Hale Center, a new state of the art weight room, tons of new staff in a lot of new positions for nutrition, athletic training, relationships with HS programs, the recruiting is better than even Schiano ever did, all of the players will be much better than they were last year. We'll be fine.

Frankly, right now, the only thing I would suggest is starting a Go Fund Me to begin to bank the money we will need to keep Ash for the long term.

Bruh, Teddy B was the definition of a drink of water as a true frosh - 6'3" 185 lbs. But your point about different systems is valid. One thing to be that size as a drop back QB but another thing in the power spread, unless he is the next coming of Pat White.

My point was if he does that, his blemishes will largely be forgotten.

Teel and Nova had their share of blemishes, but as time passes I'd like to think people more easily remember games like Louisville and Arkansas than anything else.

If Laviano succeeds and pulls out upsets over Iowa, PSU and Washington, I will be very happy for the kid. However, Rettig has the bigger arm and upside and all the things that Laviano has over Rettig (command of the offense, chemistry with teammates, leadership, etc.) can be developed if the kid is given a fair chance. I just hate to see this program allowing another 4 star QB going to waste. He just seems to be a QB that's worth developing. Pitt may have done even better if this philosophy was applied to Flacco and this program may have also won an Orange Bowl if this philosophy was also applied to Savage and he was the QB in 2012.

Agree with all the "trust the staff" comments. They have EVERYTHING riding on their decisions and have no skin in defending prior decisions or in distancing themselves from a prior coach (unlike Flood).
