Texas has their "Hook em horns", Oregon has an O, Miami has a U, can we have something???

I commute down a street that has a “Deaf Child” sign. I see young children, maybe 5 or 6 years old, playing by the house which I suspect is where the deaf child lives. I usually wave…don’t ask me why…and the kids have started waving back. The last few times driving past the house the kids have started making a hand gesture with their fingers that looks like they’re crossing their fingers. Last week there was an adult with the kids so I stopped my car to introduce myself and find out why they were making this sign with two fingers.

The explanation blew me away!!!

It turns out that the kids were learning sign language and were “signing” the letter R to me. I guess my block ‘R’s were noticeable on my car so they were giving me an ‘R’ sign. So it looks like this…

So maybe this can be our RUTGERS sign…..a way to signal that you’re a Rutgers fan! The sign for the letter ‘U’ is just as simple. I can see the day that the RRRRRRRRRR UUUUUUUUUU chant in the stadium will be done as usual but with these as the pointing back and forth. The ‘U’ looks like this.

So here’s my offer to get the ball rolling. If you see someone with a block R, a Rutgers shirt or hat, give them the ‘R’ sign. If it’s me and you give me the sign, I will pledge $1000 to the R Fund for every time someone gives me the ‘R’ sign between now and September 5th.

We have the"RU Screw". Don't know how to sign it. Hopefully we can think up a better one.

This is a great idea.

Dude you have way too much time on your hands LOL

I tried so hard to think this was a dumb idea. But I don't. RUThinking, I'll be scouring the parking lots for your fingernails...

OP - that is a very nice story with the deaf children, and an extremely nice gesture by you donation wise. Sorry, while I like the idea of maybe having a symbol (we do have the chop already), I'm not so sure about having the signed 'R' be the symbol for the entire university. Again, great story, and I think you may be on the right track, but needs some tinkering.

Guess I'll have to sit on the UUUU side. Making the RRRR tougher with arthritis ugh.

Way overthinking! Just stand up and do the "R" like the old Orioles cheer.

Chop doesn't work for ya?
I can't recall ever seeing a fan doing a chop. The last chop that I remember was seeing Eric Foster doing one during the 2006 Louisville game. (Supposedly Russo did a chop at the Elite 11 but that looked more like a clap to me).

I have nothing against the chop but we don't use it. Plus it's hard to work into the RRrrrrrrrrrr Uuuuuuuuuu cheer.

The guy who started the "hook em horns" (he recently died) was told it looked like a devil sign and got grief for years before it caught on.

Agreed....the chop is way lame.

Don't force these things. If they don't happen "organically" they don't mean squat. It's like when the P.A. announcer tells fans to make noise or something in some arenas.

I like the idea of the sign language "R". You could follow it up with a "U" - which is the same except that the pointer and middle fingers are side by side.

Yes geurdsy, that's what I said above! So me and you will do the RRrrrrrrrrrrrr UUuuuuuuuuu together until it catches on...

I don't think many clicked on my link for my first R sign so I'll open it for you guys...

The Hookem Horns is done on a 45 -90 degree angle. Do the same sign horizontally and you are warding off the "Evil Eye" (mal occhio).Maybe it works for the "Rutgers Screw" as well.

Don't we have the CHOP???

What wrong with that?
That's a fair question which I addressed above. I said something like I've never seen anyone doing the chop. The last time I saw it was Eric Foster during the Louisville game. I have never "done the chop". It sounds great and all but has never caught on with fans.

I just thought it might be nice to introduce something to recognize other RU fans. While driving in my car I'll see a block R and when we pull along side each other, I'd like to do something other than just wave (which might be misinterpreted if you don't see my R)...and I can't do the chop with both hands on the wheel...I can make an R sign quite easily to acknowledge our love of Rutgers. That person might even give me a U sign in return. That's all...

We have the chop. I saw Anthony Russo do the chop at the elite 11.

Drive with your knees like everyone else.

I'm not suggesting that we do away with the chop...

Do you "chop" when you see someone with a Rutgers shirt??????

Can't we have a secret hand signal too? (Lol). You do the R and they will answer with the U...no words spoken.

I tried to hate this idea too and my lovely wife convinced me to post it.

What exactly is the old Orioles R cheer????

Guy who spelled O-R-I-O-L-E-S cheer in 70's and 80's spelled the letter R with his body. Not that difficult. If in unison could be cool if looking for some kind of body/hands cheer.
