This is about trying to understand the whole mindset of QB recruiting and development. Why the obscession of sticking with 1 guy at this position? Is that the best way to develop a QB? Can a QB not learn from sitting out for a time if struggling? And not to get off track here, but why the complete opposite obscession at RB? "We must stick to the rotation at RB". I know Hicks and Martin are good, but Paul James makes a huge play and doesn't see the field again? How crazy is that?
I've witnessed RU offenses over the years take advantage of more than 1 QB. Lucas and Fortay, Hart and Teel, Nova and Dodd. The year Schiano alternated Nova and Dodd was better statistically than when Nova took over by himself the following year. Teel was allowed to get his feet wet freshman year playing behind Hart. Lucas and Fortay were equal talents, and both were utilized. Heck even Schiano started Natale that 1 year, and then had no problem bringing in freshman Savage in the 2nd half against Cincy. And Savage then led RU to a Bowl.
The thing is, Laviano is not a bad QB. Can't argue with the accuracy and #1 efficiency. But that has resulted in the least yardage compared with 9 other QBs in the league. He is only 1-3 as a starter. His turnovers helped to lose the WSU game, and he had a bad game at Penn St. Improved against Mich. St. but not good enough to win. Is that the resume that should keep his almost equal backup glued to the bench?
And why would a QB recruit want to play for Flood knowing that only 1 guy gets to play no matter what? Great if you're the guy. Sucks if you're not.
I don't profess to know the details of comparison between the 2 QBs. Flood has had months to compare.
He's a professional coach who's forgotten more football than I know. But he's also a coach who's more inflexible than any of his predecessors. And why is that good for QB development and for the program? In my opinion that's a huge character flaw in Flood. Apart from everything else that's gone on.
