THE OFFICIAL 2019 BIG TEN TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND GAME PREDICTION THREAD: RUTGERS-NEBRASKA

It depends which Rutgers shows up.
This team is worn out....& IMO the Penn St loss hurt
2 days rest...is that enough?
2 days prep..is that enough?
(YES)

Rutgers 72
Nebraska 66

Just an FYI. Amir Harris who started due to other injuries and suspensions is having an MRI on a knee and is likely done for the year or very limited at best. Walk-on likely starting. Down to 6 scholarship guys and 8 or 9 players in total. I submitted my paperwork to join the team and stand at half court and point to add to their depth.

if you can hit some 3's we'll take you to replace Thiam

I don't know if we have enough in the tank at this point. So many things going against us... Baker in slump, Eugene clearly hobbled, team still reeling from crushing PSU defeat, team distracted by Thiam's arrest/suspension.

BUT, Nebraska is really short-handed at this point, and perhaps the most important point, I don't think they have a lock-down defender who can harass Baker like he's been harassed the past two games. Plus I doubt many Husker fans will travel to Chicago after the disappointing season Nebraska had, so there shouldn't be any sort of home court advantage.

I think Pike squeezes another win out of this team. But it's going to be a nailbiter, as Watson is playing at a high level, and he gives them a third option after Palmer and Roby.

These young guys may have hit a wall. If so, they're going to have to find it from somewhere for Thurs.

I don't make predictions, but, 4 guys out is lot. Of course, a few have been out for quite some time....Copeland and Allen.

If Harris is ruled out, he'll join an injury list that already consists of former starters Isaac Copeland and Thomas Allen, both out for the season. Miles suspended forward Nana Akenten last week for a violation of team rules.

Watson can be a lock down defender most of the time but it is very important for him to stay out of foul trouble with Allen and Akenton out. Harris is a very good defender but not if he is hobbled or cannot play. Ha.

On a side note. Without the injuries NU probably doesn’t beat Iowa because the kid that blocked the last second Bohanon shot would have been at the end of the bench. He is 6” taller than the guy who would have been on him. Haha. We all know from past experience that Bohanon would have made it without the block. Haha

As to the fans. Very few will travel, however, Chicago has the second biggest Alumni association for NU. Whether or not they show up is another story...

We’re a better team now than when we beat them at home, plus they are shorthanded.

Interestingly, that first game Johnson had 13 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists, and Mathis had 20 points and 9 rebounds. Can they duplicate that output? Might be tough for them to match.

On the other hand, Harper only played 13 minutes that day and McConnell played only 9 while Kiss played 18 minutes and Thiam played 8.

Curious to see who steps up for us....

RU wins a tight one, 69-66.

It will be a test of their will & determination to see how they respond coming out of Sunday's game at IU where the defense was poor (besides the 1 week Purdue & Minn stretch) we have typically been good in that area.

Since Roby tends to float on the outside & not always look assertive in the post this is a good matchup for us, especially if we can get them in foul trouble since their depth is tested.

I am not so much concerned about their fatigue or reeling from the PSU loss, if anything it was encouraging that they didnt roll over & die in that game to the point where we almost pulled the comeback off. IU was going to be tough & I think we all knew that.

RU wins this one, will not be comfortable as most RU games are not but we win. Baker finds a way to shake off the funk by driving in the paint (something he needs to get back to), Caleb continues to play well & EO continues to will his way in the post.

If that happens, the negativity will be great going into next year.

I think we will win.

Best of Luck,
Groz

So what.

Everyone thought we were in big trouble this year because Sanders left. People forgot about 3 years and just remembered what he did in the 3 days. If I am right.....people want to take what we did in 2 days and forget about what we accomplished the entire season that is OK too.

Most on the message board can put what happened to Issa and file it away and forget about it. Issa is just a number and stats.

I may be completely wrong with my thesis. The team may come out and play like they have 15 out of 20 games and win 50/50s.

To think I am out of mind because a teammate they all care about has his life ruined and it doesn't have an impact? This team has won 7 games because of coaching, hard work and chemistry.

Anyone who thinks the Issa situation didnt affect us on Sunday in my opinion is "out of their mind."

Rutgers 69, Nebraska 66.
Because we need to prove we aren’t same old rutgers

I think we already proved that & feel confident in saying not just in the opinion of our fanbase but in the BIG as well. With that said I think we should win this game based on depth & talent.

Come on Husker I am sure you can drain a 3 under pressure:sunglasses:

With the injuries and such, Roby is playing the stretch 4 and isn't playing inside much. Roby is either shooting from outside or using dribble drive on the big that has to guard him when they come out to stop him from shooting the 3 which he can do(needs to take more of them). Borchart is the 5 now. He will get into foul trouble even if playing without officials. He won't give up easy hoops and is a bruiser. Offensively I'n not sure that I'm not better than him(see previous post ha). He was a D-1 offensive tackle recruit that opted for hoops. He lost 40lbs to be able to do it and is still about 270. His backup is 7' true freshman that can disappear from view if he turns sideways. He was suppose to redshirt but that didn't work out so well. He just isn't physically ready for the Big 10.

Rutgers 74 Nebraska 65.

We are simply too deep for them right now. I expect a close first half and we should take over in the 2nd. This is who I wanted in the first round, we'll see if I'm happy with what I wished for.

On the other hand, I'd rather play anyone else other than Maryland in the next round, if we get there. It's a match-up nightmare for us and I could see Maryland winning the tournament.

Appreciate the insight and constructive comments from a fan, refreshing. For Rutgers sounds like attacking inside should be the game plan. Agreed Roby can create a mismatch but I know hes been quiet some games so for our sake hope it stays that way lol.

In order to win this game Rutgers needs a surge in scoring from the guard position with Baker and Mathis .Palmer will be driving to the basket on most possessions getting Rutgers defenders in early foul trouble.
