I've been on both sides of the fence on accounting for the positives when they are warranted. We knocked down 50% from 3 and shot 53% overall from the field....Anytime you shoot that well, you should win the game comfortably.
RU isn't going to shoot 50% from the field for Big Ten games and most teams hold opponents to closer to 40% from the field. Teams scout and gameplan much better in conference games, you are on TV and it's much easier to prepare for what you want to stop an opponent from doing.
At this stage of where Eddie is in Year 3, I'm hesitant to get on board because I haven't seen enough over the first dozen or so games that makes me believe that we are taking our lumps and will improve over the course of the season. Size or no size, you can still improve on both ends of the court. If you lose games because you get crushed on the offensive glass, then that's OK in my book.
If you don't swarm or get deflections on defense, box out and play closer to what Northwestern does with not as many athletes as RU, then we are in for a long conference season. It's about effort and being determined, not always talent.
The next month doesn't mean as much based on wins and losses, we can continue to have hot-shooting nights and not improve in other areas. The staff needs to show they are preparing for the opponents and not allowing teams to get their first option on offense and make teams go to their 2nd and 3rd choices on who takes shots against our defense.
Now for the good news or good signs.....If that happens and we make teams work on occasion for their points, RU can stay in games because Sanders is actually that good and if he wanted to free-wheel and push up shots, he can certainly do so and be outside of the team concept. He has NOT shown any indication that he wants to be that type of me first player, which was my #1 concern when we've seen the Eli Carters, Mike Rosario, JJ Moore (for one season).....we've seen players blatantly look for their own offense outside of the team concept OR to start to feel like they need to take the game over because others are not knocking down shots.
Eddie is doing an excellent job so far, in managing Sanders and keeping him in line with what we are running on offense. If he can get Sanders, Williams and others to dedicate more effort on the defensive end and spread shots out to Grier and others, we might have a signal that improvement will be on it's way. I can already forecast Nigel Johnson doing next year what Grier did last night, which will make the 3 guard attack, much more explosive next year.
But I need to see more to get on board again and we have 18+ B1G games to determine whether the team improves or not....and it's not going to be judged strictly be wins and losses or how much depth we have or don't have. We have had short-handed rosters before and Diallo and Doorson being out, actually accelerates the growth of Laurent and Foreman, so you take the good with the bad.......We've been short-handed and with limited size (Rice's first season) and that roster competed most nights. We can score more points than those past teams, can we match our desire to get points with getting stops, is the question.
