THE OFFICIAL RUTGERS-IOWA PREDICTION THREAD

I think there's always a likelihood of fans picking RU to win after a win and the game is at home.

The Illinois win over Ohio State on the road mixed with how RU played at Illinois gives fans confidence that RU is getting better. If Ohio State won comfortably vs Illinois by 6 to 8 points and Georgi had a quiet game, I think there would be more doubters.

RU has shown an ability to play with a quicker tempo and I actually think that tempo favors RU for this reason....easy, transition baskets.

Players like Mathis, Baker, McConnell and Harper have the ability to get easy baskets if we rebound and push the ball up the court. While that appears to be favoring Iowa, if they miss shots and have to get back on defense, they're probably foul prone and RU will get to the FT line.

RU FT shooting isn't as much of a concern to me as much as just getting to the line. If RU pushes the ball and draws fouls, they get Iowa in foul trouble and with each FT attempt, Eugene, Doorson, Carter and Myles get to go to the other end of the court and wait for Iowa to advance the ball off a rebounded missed FT or a made FT....taking a lot of 3s may accelerate Iowa's fast break, so I would be selective on avoiding transition 3s and would prefer to take 3s, during our normal offense in half court.

The advantage Iowa has is with Moss and Cook just being quicker and stronger inside. If RU can set up defensively, that should slow down Iowa's up tempo play.

This should be a game in the 70s and i think Iowa plays solid but just is off enough, and RU gets enough rebounds on both ends. RU 76-72.

Bad match up because Iowa averages between 70- 85 points per game regardless of location with shooters at every position.Yes,Rutgers can win but it will require their best offensive game this season at home against a B1G opponent.

We can win this game if we make it ugly, just not confident that we will. We seem to tighten up when the big boys come to town.

Iowa 72

On another thread someone suggested Harper hitting 4 3s in a game....well, he hits 5 here and we limit our turnovers and play well enough to out gun Iowa...

I have a hard time thinking that we can slow down Iowa's potent offense. I mean, they have THREE guys who average over 40% from the 3-pt. line (two of whom are at 45%, that's just Clown Shoes), and that's not even talking about their terrific front court tandem in Cook and Garza (who are actually their two leading scorers).

Pike won't want to double the post (sorry kyk) because Iowa will make us pay on the kickout threes, so we're going to have to apply some 3/4 court press (to churn clock and make Iowa start their half court offense late) but then just play man-up and hope that Iowa's shooters have an off night.

I think we will score too, but we just don't have enough firepower to keep up.

Iowa is a scarily efficient offensive team. You look at their logs and think we can't win. Then you look at their defensive logs and then you have hope.

Michigan State torched the twice defensively because they couldnt rebound
Purdue shot 24-38 from 2 vs. them
Minnesota shot 25-38 from 2 vs. them

Their 2 point FG% against is 53.1% or 284th...keep in mind that ranking is raw and not adjusted for opponent.

They shoot the 3 great but are ranked 159th in amount of 3s they take.

SUMMARY>>>>
I really don't have a take on this game. I think a deliberate offense getting the ball inside can lead to points AND Harper and Mathis can take the ball to the rim without the shot blocker.

Uptempo means more fouls. they shoot it 75% and I don't want to research our numbers. Uptempo means some easy (actuualy should say easier) fast break points.

Going to go with
Iowa 71
Rutgers 68

We will be ahead 80% of the game and this loss will sting, but leave us with the same upbeat feeling we entered the game with.,

Our 3 point defense and how well they shoot the 3 will determine the game. This isn't the game to double the post or worry about dribble penetration. Get up on their shooters and force them off the 3 and live with the results. Make them beat you off the dribble and with 2's. Generally I am scared when Rutgers plays a team that shoots the 3 so well but if we use our length and get in their faces I think we can get it done

On offense push the pace when we can and attack.
Get them in foul trouble. Seems like a game Mathis Harper Caleb can get to the basket and cause problems... Is this the Harper break out 3 game?

We are 12-2 when holding teams under 70

We are 0-10 when teams score 70 or more

Make that 13-2 when holding teams under 70

Rutgers 72

Doesn't mean anything. They average 70-85 points against everyone else. Every game is different.

Yes,every game is different but Iowa has the highest scoring average in the league and Rutgers has difficulty scoring 60-65 points which translates to a bad match up.

RU goes fighting Illini on them ...cuts down on turnovers and converts from charity stripe.

Big game ...

Mo

I think their perimeter shooting will kill us and this has the trappings to be similar to the St. Johns game where there is nothing you can do because they are just shooting the lights out.

I can't believe Bohannon is only a Junior. It seems like he's been the premier perimeter shooter in this league forever.

Iowa a much better team but I'm a believer that the prior year's matchups don't flip as easily as you'd think.

RU 76 Iowa 72 and when we go there they're going to make ALL of the threes and win by 30

Unfortunately, I don’t see us winning tonight. They shoot lights out, we are mediocre at best on offense.
