The ref said you want to kick first , before pats player

You could hear someone say "we want to kick" but the camera was focusing on the coin on the ground at the time. Have to assume it was Slater who said it.

What I saw was that the Pats player elected to kick, but then was surprised when he wasn't offerred the choice of which end of the field to kick from. The media jumped on the player's question to th ref but you can't hear the whole thing, all you can hear is "wait a minute, don't we get to choose..." But you never hear what it is he wanted to choose. The media thinks he somehow meant to receive, but I dont think that's what he was saying.

Either way, it was really unusual. Was a good game though.

If he gets the first decision, and elects to kick, then the other team gets to choose the direction.

For a team that wins a lot by not making mistakes that sure was a pip by NE.

Great pass by Fitz at the end. I figured he would have a rough game since there were media bouquets and puff pieces about him all week in media. Its like when game announcer point out how great a player is and they flub up next play

The Gronkowski catch before NE's last TD was epic. Too bad Jets scored at RU player's expense

Exactly. He was clearly confused, but without knowing exactly what Belichek told him to do if they won the toss, it's hard to know what happened. Although why anybody wouldn't want the ball first in OT is beyond me.

Boomer on CBS said that Belichick told his players to select kick but they are speculating that the coach is just taking the blame for the blunder.

They let coaches call time outs, just let them go out to mid field and make the coin toss decision as well. It's silly.

Also, I just got back from the game, and there were a LOT OF PATRIOT fans at the game. More than a few obnoxious ones, but not as many fights as I anticipated.

Looking back, I think it is quite likely that Belichick elected to kick. His defense was playing very well at the time. If he forces a punt, he only needs a FG to win.

I believe Slater's "Don't we get to choose" comment has to do with which goal they wanted to defend. His first statement was that they wanted to kick, and you only get to choose one thing.

It was the Jets who gave up the late score in regulation. Belichick was not coaching the Jets today. He did coach the Jets for one day, but it was not today.

My favorite theory... Pats want no part of the Steelers so decided to lose after Pittsburgh's loss became official

He Had 2 choices he could make when deferring
Kick
choose which goal to defend
He chose kick then realized he was suppose to choose a goal to defend, that had to be why he was incredulous when the Ref did not allow him to choose.

The Steelers are not in the due to their lost to Baltimore. It the Jets win next week the Steelers are eliminated.

Belicheck has dropped to just below Walter Camp and Vince Lombardi, and just above Amos Alonzo Stagg and Knute Rockne in the best coaches ever list.

What a bonehead call! Did he forget he had Brady and Gronk?

I think he forgot the Pro OT rule is different than the College OT rule, lol !

Exactly. And this only became the case if the Jets won versus the Pats. If the Pats won today, both the Steelers and Jets would be 9-6 with the Steelers owning the tiebreakers. Belichick hears that the Steelers lost in Baltimore, and decides to give the game to the Jets, therefore hurting the Steelers chances of making the playoffs.

Of course I don't really think this is true. More likely that Belichick thinks he is smarter than everyone else and kicking off is really a better strategy to win.

Doug - I think that's his point ... by letting the Jets win, they moved ahead of the Steelers in the running for the wildcard playoff spot.

I figured that under the new rule, sooner or later somebody would not elect to receive in OT. But I thought it would be in one of those blizzard games, with the winner of the toss electing to take the wind.
