It was a beautiful defensive series. I'm really excited to see that caliber of play here at Rutgers. We'll need some upgraded talent, to be sure, but I think we're in general agreement that the talent we have can step up with better coaching.

Thank you for posting. I love the aggressive approach not just from the front 7 but the back 4. This is something that has been missing from our approach in the last couple of years.

On another note what exactly is Fickels responsibility. I have a friend that is a die hard Buckeye fan/ former walk on and he says that Fickel is well liked in certain Columbus circles but hasn't significantly coached since Urban has been there. He is more of a poilitical figure.

Fick is a great LB coach, he does a excellent job of teaching the players to properly use their hands and get off blocks. Also does well teaching them to diagnose plays in the backfield, we have ahd some fanstastic LB's come through since Fick has been coaching them. He is very well liked by players, coaches, and administration. He is also a very good recruiter.

Fick's problem was making proper calls and adjustments on game day. Ash was brought in to make those calls, that is why Ash was in the booth and Fick is on the sideline. Ash would call plays down to Fick who would relay them to players.

Fick would also make personnell adjustments (who came off for a rest, who went in for them ect.)

RU in 2015:
Last in B1G for sacks
Last in B1G for 3rd down D

Really looking forward to see what Ash can do for us here.
Ash and his assistants, Darius Hamilton back, a healthy Turay with proper coaching, and a somewhat experienced secondary with proper coaching are cause for optimism. Depth at linebacker is cause for worry.

This article highlights the issues with the defensive line and backers we had under Flood. The further away from the Schiano era we got the lousier the pass rush and 3rd down defense got. GS will fit right in in Columbus in that he ran a bunch of very creative stunts and blitzes very similar to those outlined in the article. (not to mention having some great athletes to execute the packages) I am sure our 3rd down defense and general blitz/stunt package will return to what we were use to under Schiano. One of the big disappointments under Flood was the DC's he hired that seem to lack any semblance of creativity on 3rd down and with the blitz/stunt packages the defense ran.

I'm sure that had nothing to do with losing 4 defensive linemen (3 to graduation and 1 to injury) along with a 5th being ineffective due to injury for the whole year, along with losing 8 defensive backs (3 to graduation, 5 to thuggery/grades) and a 9th to injury halfway through the season.

Well we weren't much more competitive in the conference the year before either. So that played a role but wasn't the whole reason for struggling.
