Time to start cheering for Rutgers instead of the backup qb

Have no problem with the people thinking that they knew better than our staff for the first few weeks based on a recruiting ranking, but now it's time to just cheer the team on. This kid isn't going anywhere. If there is an injury type situation I'll be all for Rettig, but Laviano has earned this thing now and deserves some dang love from a lot of you.

Really don't see people's rationale for a change in QB at this point. For two weeks now the offense has clicked. They are coming to play and scoring points. Change nothing on this side of the ball. The other side well that's a whole other story. They need a lot of help over there and it's not all inexperience.

Let's not forget the backup QBs are also part of Rutgers. So let's root for them, as well.

Believe me when Rettig plays I'll be his biggest supporter, but it's just unnecessary at this point to watch games looking for underthrown balls and miscues. So much would have to go wrong at this point for him to lose the job that everyone just needs to get on board

Im convinced a lot of the flood hate is also about that same backup QB in majorityz rather than the other stuff people just throw in to enhance their argument. There are people that are rooting for Laviano and the team to tank just so that Flood can be proven wrong all about one player. It's the weirdest thing ever. So so weird.

BTW. That kid, the backup, has a wayyy better attitude than all of you.

Yeah, I think it's always been more Flood hate than Laviano hate. Many of us are just frustrated that Flood has proven over many years that he makes a personnel decision and refuses to show any flexibility.

And let's not forget he has a history of some really bad decisions. I mean... not starting Marcus Cooper? Not utilizing Tim Wright? Not making Kroft a weapon? Poor Deering. How do you not find a way to play Agudosi??? Or all the moving of players to all kinds of positions that don't work for them? And of course Nova, and an absolute refusal to give anyone else one snap.

Personally, I think Laviano has looked great. Certainly better than Nova's progress at same point. He might not have a big arm, and makes some inexperienced mistakes... but you can tell he's a leader, he has that moxie, has a natural connection with carroo, and he's very accurate in certain windows.

If it wasn't for Flood's history of questionable depth chart preferences... it's doubtful there would be any controversy. But I think many fans believe Rettig could be a special player... i mean his brother who doesn't even have as many of the physical gifts, and was a 4 year starter and now in the NFL. I just think we're in the interesting predicament of having two great QBs. A good problem to have, but in certain passing situations (for example, like michigan state last week at the end of the game when we had to get down the field quickly and pop off a hail mary) - Rettig is situationally the better option. But fact is, Flood's the type of guy who would never invite that possibility.

4Life, you make some very fair points. There have been times during the season where sitting Laviano out for a series may have been a prudent option. The problem seems to be that Kyle is ok with rotating or changing players in every position except QB. Yet we see other teams doing it well. Could it be an influence by the pro's. We do have two very good QB'S for a change. While people tend to criticize the defense a lot could be changed by keeping them off the field and controlling the ball on offense. We could have won the WSU game that way and perhaps even PSU.

I haven't been posting about putting in Rettig, but I admit I felt he should have gotten a chance at some point. The coaches seemed so afraid to have Laviano throw a pass longer than 10 yards that it was holding the team back (no f'in way Penn State is 28-3 better than Rutgers, conservative coaching caused that blowout). If anything, I felt sorry for Laviano because he was being put in so many 2nd /3rd and long situations.

Now that the return of Carroo got the coaches to open up the playbook, I think you have judge Laviano's overall performance pretty favorably for a guy that has made 5 starts. I just hope the coaches watch the film, see Agudosi's catches and (especially) the 40 yard pass completed to Patton, and don't go back into an offensive shell if Carroo misses some time..

Not sure if agree.

COOPER - Logan Ryan on one side, Brandon Jones on the other side. Jones had 9 pass breakups and a team high 5 INTS! Cooper was a nice 3rd CB to be sure and he was inexperienced due to being a WR his first couple of years here.

WRIGHT - Not sure how RU didn't utilize Tim right? (Wright...right...lol...that's terrible....lol) He certainly wasn't better than Coleman and not Harrison either. He's done better in the pros than in college and I hope for continued success...though haven't seen much from him this year.

KROFT - Big sophomore year! Was on the field most of the time junior year. Stats down, yes, but was it Fridge's Offense? Nova's decisions? Carroo being Carroo? Not sure what to say here.

DEERING - As a WR, RB or DB???? Talented kid with no clear position, except returner. As a WR, he had iffy hands. As a DB, he lacked experience and often took poor angles. Who would he have played over in the Def backfield earlier? Not going to go into RB...not a RB...an athlete who played some RB.

I think Laviano has been good for the most part. Obviously the experts see more from him in practice and that is why he is the starter over Rettig. I agree on giving him a bit of a leash and allowing him to make a few mistakes, (not the Nova leash of course). He is much easier to stomach than Nova who probably took about 5 years off my life for each year he played here. He may not have the natural ability, but doesn't seem to be a cowboy either which I can live with.
