Todd Frazier on state of Rutgers baseball: ‘I feel like we should be a powerhouse'

I hope at this point every single coach in every sport “gets it.” The days of being able to collect a paycheck for years or even decades from Rutgers just for showing up are over.

Considering Hobbs has fired three more coaches this spring alone, I’d say that’s the plan. Putting football aside, not really sure how you could whine about Hobbs’ job performance to this point.

He is trending up. However, given the financial impact football has on the department finances, it is not possible to put it aside. Hobbs needs to show football ticket sales improvement over whatever the 2019 number ends up being, either because Ash succeeds enough to get back fan confidence or he hires someone new that improves the outlook. (He can also at least marginally help himself here by maximizing the one thing most controllable for him -- fan experience)

Hobbs has demonstrated he knows how to manage coach contracts, but needs to show over the next couple of years that he now understands that at Rutgers you can't hand out long guaranteed big money contracts with no plan on how to escape them if it goes badly.

Also, just want to highlight that Hobbs replaced three coaches by letting their contracts expire. That is, he did so without costing extra unnecessary cash. He didn't fall for the "if my baseball coach doesn't have a guaranteed contract for several more years he won't be able to recruit!!" angle.

Wolv, my friend, you’re nuts if you think - let alone expect - we’re going to see ticket sales increase this season. Not going to happen. Hobbs made a mistake with Ash, we all get it, but it was a rushed decision in a frantic time around our athletic department and ever since he’s been spot-on With his hires and just about everything else.

I understand about this season. I want to see sales increase in 2020 compared to the (very) low bar that will be set in 2019.

Hobbs has his next significant test in November when he decides what to do with Ash. It will be a make or break decision. It will be a 2 part decision. Getting rid of Ash should he the easy part. Hiring a proven winner will show us what he's made of.
