Tough game

Reading their press clippings. Had their heads up their asses.

Teams have bad games. Especially offensively challenged teams. The defensive intensity didn’t arrive for the Sunday noon start.

You can’t say they were reading their clippings. Last game was your chance to trot that line out.

We just don’t seem to match up well with Iowa. Two bad losses at home; got to make it up on the road

The secret sauce for our opponents is to immediately collapse on Cliff when he gets the ball. He doesn’t know how to handle the ball, makes poor pass decisions, a turnover waiting to happen. In all honesty, his defense is poor too. Love the kid but he’s nowhere near ready for the NBA

Which has zero to do with your 6-11 center having no impact on the game.
Even if we play poorly and lose he should have a positive impact
Throw in there as well that Hyatt and Mag are not that good. We needed a legit Big 10 PF from the portal in the off season. Hyatt hits a few 3's now and then and Mag is challenged offensively.

Nobody on team had a good game. Paul had worst game of year coming off best one. Way too many out of control shots. Confident Pike will fix
Paul never established himself in strong offensive position and bailed on his shots. Looked discombobulated.

He looked like he didn't want to dunk. Cost is 4-6 points
on that alone

We are too offensively challenged to beat teams that are hitting their 3's. I'm at the point where I don't expect much from Cliff when he is up against a decent big man, even if he is 2 or 3 inches taller.
Even a shot he made in the post was bad footwork
He’s a bad passer out of the post even his good reads tend to be tough to catch
Great at other stuff though that block and running the floor for off reb and finish was great

The start was obviously terrible but we crawled it back to 4 with just under 4 minutes left in first half. Finish strong and likely a different second half. Instead we give up an 8-0 run to finish the half. Game

We have games where we play and shot very well
Then we have the seton hall and Iowa games
Make the layups and short shots and then we can play to the wire with the home team chances we to win

If we want to win the league, or at least finish in the top 4, we have to win all ( or almost all) home games. This is hard to do when you have a crappy offense.

We had 2 days to prepare for (and travel to) purdue, 2 days for Maryland then 2 days for Iowa. And then assuming things havent changed, they are required to have an off day sometime in the week. Not sure when that was taken. These guys looked beat and it's hard to fault them after their schedule this week. You could tell from the beginning they just didn't have their legs. Ashamed it happened against a beatable team.

Let’s not over react. We never brought the defensive intensity and Pike called off the press early which let Iowa run what they wanted. Sometimes you have to give the other team a little credit without killing our guys even though a number of them did not play well today.
Despite it all this game was lost by 2 major things. Despite Iowa playing almost a flawless first half , we got it to 34-30 and Cam got a cheap second foul and we let them close the last 2-3 minutes of the half on an 8-0 run to be down 42-30 at the half. Should never have happened. .

Second , after stopping them for 5-6 straight trips with about 4 to go , they threw up an air ball and we let Rebraca get a weak side rebound and he dished out for a late 3, which was a killer. But we counter and then ball on next possession goes out of bounds with 1 on shot clock and we let Murray catch lob and convert. Double killer. We were down 6 , a stop on either possession and conversion gets it to a 1 possession game with 2 to go and would have liked our chances.
Finally , Sanderford had a career day and Aundre could not stay with him and he scored 22 , including the Wolf foul in the first half which he converted all 3 foul shots that got him going. Mag should have been on him.
Lastly , cannot have your freshman Derek taking a lot of your big shots. Some real bad ones in first half and 2 key open three point shots late in the second half. . Had to do more to play inside out there.
Paul and Cliff were very below average today and no one played really well versus Iowa ‘s whole team played well to their utmost capabilities. Hopefully it doesn’t happen to us more times this year.

3rd game in 5.5 days. They have to be tired.
That being said missing so many under the basket Paul scoring 5? Points was not helpful at all
Looking at our remaining schedule, 3 games in 5.5 days is an anomaly. Certainly did not help our performance today. Wonder if it had an effect on Cliff who looked sluggish. Or perhaps he’s not 100%.

After the Purdue game looking at the schedule it wasn't the Maryland game that worried me from a legs standpoint....it was Iowa
