WR Recruiting
Rutgers is looking to add one more wide receiver to its recruiting class of 2016. With three wide receivers already on board, it looks as though there will be room for one more. Last night, Palmyra wide receiver four-star Kelvin Harmon confirmed to Scarlet Nation that Rutgers is still his leader. However, an interesting twist was introduced this past weekend as Maryland North Point High wide receiver Devonte Young picked up a Rutgers offer following a very strong camp performance.
Young told Scarlet Nation last night that the RU offer may have sped up his process a bit as he also holds offers from Pitt and Iowa. Young said he would like to visit the RU campus with his parents soon while a visit to Iowa awaits him on the 19th of June. If Young snatches up the fourth wide receiver spot, it could leave Harmon without a spot. As the month of June continues and more prospects continue to commit around the country, it may be a race among recruits for some final spots and that does not exclude Rutgers.
Camden four-star Brad Hawkins also remains a target but it doesn’t look like he is going to make a commitment anytime soon. Despite the numbers game, there is a very strong chance RU could keep a spot open for Hawkins throughout the entire recruiting season.
Big Tuesday Visitor
Rutgers will welcome back DeMatha class of 2016 offensive lineman Elijah Johnson to campus on Tuesday as he remains one of RU’s top offensive lineman targets. Things were progressing well between RU and Johnson and then a Maryland offer presented a new challenge for RU. Things are still on good terms between Johnson and RU, although today’s visit could play a major role in how things wind up unfolding in his recruitment.
Another RB visitor
Rutgers has already landed a running back commit in the class of 2016 in Trey Sneed. However, the staff is keeping tabs on Kingsway running back Sean Samuels in case the staff chooses to add another to this class.
“I am going to the Rutgers camp on June 20th. I talk to coach Galiano, he came to the school and spoke to me," Samuels said. "I have been getting a lot of letters from them as well. I also went to their spring game for a visit and met the coaching staff.”
If an offer were to come about, Samuels would definitely consider Rutgers.
“I would love to stay home for college,” he said.
Samuels picked up his first offer last Thursday from Navy and is receiving interest from Pitt, Temple, Old Dominion, Army and West Virginia.
D-Tackle Updates
Four-star class of 2017 defensive tackle Fred Hansard of The Hun School did not show up at Rutgers this past weekend, but will be in attendance during the next Big Man Academy on June 20th.
Fellow NJ class of 2017 D-lineman Dalyn Wade-Perry of Pope John was in attendance during Saturday’s camp and had the chance to work with defensive line coach Jim Panagos.
“It was a great experience. I hear a lot from other players and coaches that he is a fired-u[p dude," Wade-Perry said of Panagos. "I noticed that when I first met him. As soon as I walked through the door, he greeted me right away. Then, he was teaching me new pass rush, new run stop moves and it was a great experience.”
