Between this game, the Washington vs Oregon Pac 12 title game and the Purdue NW thriller, you had 3 great contests on.
In terms of Spencer, this is one of the rare UConn games where an opponent actually has a capable big man that can guard Donovan Clingan, without an automatic double team.....Former Michigan big man Hunter Dickinson is now at Kansas and was able to stay with Clingan 1 on 1 and also made Clingan work defensively......
Since Kansas was able to guard Clingan 1 on 1, they just simply matched up with their other 4 players and Spencer was actually being defended. The other guard Tristan Newton, was the shot maker, playmaker against aggressive Kansas defense.....Newton made a lot of tough 3s and tough shots, 1 on 1.
Spencer on the other hand, if opposing teams pay attention to him, can shut him down and make him take tough shots. He had few clean looks and his stat line of 2-12, is what is more realistic to what we saw for 10 to 15 games last year at RU. If he has to be the primary offensive player on a roster, he'll struggle like last night.
If a team doesn't have the center to defend Clingan and teams are forced to double team him, the ball then moves and Spencer finds open 3s, which he'll make if he's unguarded. It's the perfect set up for him, it may be the only true game where UConn sees a big man like Dickinson (unless they play a Purdue, but UConn, player for player, is much better than Purdue).
