Football VIDEO: Greg Schiano talks Saturday spring practice

Feel free to disagree but I got the distinct impression that he was trying very hard to not be excited or positive but, in spite of trying not to, he sounded very positive about what he has seen so far. Also, I thought the reporters there asked some very good questions that made it harder for him to be evasive.

Some of the usual "young guys - we'll see how they progress."
Team "under performed" last year and has to get better.
There was also some optimism about improved WR corps.
O'line is always the hardest group but they are "unselfish" (was never sure what that means for OL) and like playing together as a group (Reggie Sutton has to be paced).
Kenny Fletcher is a talented athlete who can make good plays but has to learn to do them consistently

I heard it a bit differently. It wasn’t the same generic “we’re young” messaging. He referenced specific young players who are unproven but came in with talent they are trying to tap into. Seemed like he was saying it’s too early to tell but there could be young guys who surprise people and beat out some veterans.

He said he thought the Dline could’ve been better than it was last year. I didn’t hear a general emphasis on underperformance across all units.

He said the OL has good team chemistry and work together well - not unselfish. And that he’s optimistic this a culture that has gradually been established and can be passed on year after year from upper class guys to the younger players on the line.

For me - the underlying message on Sutton was, yes, it’s great we have him back. He’s limited, and was always limited in how much he can train and ultimately contribute. A sort of tacit reminder that needed him out there full time when Tyler went down otherwise he probably wouldn’t have played as much. Tyler is back now thankfully so we’ll have more options.

Fletcher is learning his position as expected.

Certainly some of that is possible,
I just hate to hear coach use "young" as much as he always does.
He's setting low bars and slow goes.
He also said OL wasn't as good as it could have been (under performing).
He said Coach Ciarrocca "protected" OL with play selection - long pass protection was an issue (4:15 in).
He did say OL was unselfish (5:13) in.
RB/WR/QB spots I could see players needing to be unselfish but OL?

He didn’t talk about us being young in the context your referring to as in some past years where he would say over and over - “you have to remember, we’re young”. This was different. He was saying we’re adding some young blood to the mix - they are talented but of course raw so we don’t know what we’re getting yet in those kids. He wasn’t implying the whole team is young or saying it in an attempt to set a low bar. He was asked about newcomers I believe and didn’t want to oversell them.

Yeah he said the OL still has work to do. We all knew that though - they didn’t underperform expectation - they just need to keep getting better. His comment about protection confirms some of the more conservative play calling. We can only run plays that our guys are capable of executing.

In terms of unselfish - I take it he was referring to personalities - good chemistry and no resentments about PT, etc. the main point was the group works together well as a unit.

In CFB everybody is young.
Marvin Harrison Jr is 21.
If RU got #1 recruit in nation would Schiano be reminding people how young he was?
I find its part of Greg's MO to lower expectations - generous use of "young" label is one way he does it.
"I make 6 mil a year but dont expect too much from my young team."
I never heard Saban say "we're young" despite playing lots of new players every year.
Deion Sanders tells players he's almost 60 and "doesn't have time for you to grow-up."
