I am Mr. Blue Sky. Don't pencil it in as a win. Wow they looked solid against USC. Chris Petersen has them playing well. And guess what? They did it without going deep. 5 yards per pass, and an impressive running game.

"They did it without going deep"??????

Were you watching the game on ESPNAU, their alternate universe channel? The Washington-USC game I watched saw Washington attempt several long passes. Although unsuccessful, they might have had an impact on how well the short passing game and running attack worked by keeping the safeties honest. Forcing the defense to defend the whole field by at least attempting some long passes is all we are asking from RU as well.

Yeah, but the deep passes were floated with really high arcs on them. I bet the backup QB would have through them straight like a laser beam. :flush:

I was watching more of the Houston/SMU game but when I was watching the Washington/USC game their true freshman qb didn't look like he was all that accurate. They did go long a few times and the WRs were open but he couldn't hit them. Missed a sure TD to an open WR even on short pass near the goal line and they had to settle for a FG. I can't tell you how often they attempted long passes because I didn't see the whole game but they definitely did a few when I watched. The qb wasn't accurate though.

That's why long passes should not be attempted! :flush:

We don't even attempt long passes at all. You can be proud of our short passing game but I'd rather look badly with some passes downfield that stretches the defense than be so predictable.

We had 3 points against Penn State. Check out the scores of their games this year. That should give you a clue at how successful having a 100% short game can be.

Are you Mr Blue Sky or Mr Denial?

Dude, your sarcasm meter is broken.
Do you really think any fan would advocate not throwing deep?
I have made it quite clear that if the coaches don't want to stretch the field because of some issue with CL, then Rettig should get a shot.
Am I clear?

The main difference is Washington defense was very good and sacked the QB several times. We are placing too much emphasizes on the QB when the defense won the game.

I sometimes think the anti-Flood crowd thinks that those that are more measured and restrained about our situation believe everything is 100% fine and they agree with all the decisions made by the coaching staff. Some of just choose not to complain about it over and over and over. If things go badly this year, change will eventually happen. But we are not Texas or USC, and it will not happen overnight with a $4-5 million head coach on our radar screen.

This game is being rebroadcast on ESPNU now (between a ton of commercials). I happened to turn it on right when Washington threw downfield twice on three plays - one was an amazing catch by the WR grabbing the ball from behind the CB on what was probably a 15-20 yard throw (I turned it on in the middle of the play) and one was an overthrow of a deeper pass.

Now Washington is running the ball well, and on one of the replays you could clearly see the USC safety was lined up 15-20 yards downfield at the snap. I don't remember seeing PSU's safeties much more than 10 yards off the ball in most of our game.

My Lord I hope nobody is penciling in a game on the road,to open the season, in Husky Stadium, as a "W"! I do plan on being there, however, so about an hour into tailgating on someone's boat I'm quite sure that I'll be declaring "victory" for the guys in Scarlet!!!

p.s. - they sure as hell were "throwing downfield" Shift! It was a late game, no worries, all good lol!

yeah, but the yards per catch was 5.0, and Laviano is more than double that. [banana]

We don't throw enough long passes, so we're gonna lose by 97 gazilliony points!
