5th year transfer seniors tend to be better than walkons

Most of the graduate transfers that are available averaged fewer than 4-5 points per game in small conferences. Why bother? Batie and Dadika can't shoulder the load? There is literally no one left in 5th year market to choose from.

5th year transfers literally cannot hurt us. For a bad squad like us, I cant for the life of me understand why some posters do not understand this. It is better to take a shot on someone than not have the extra body who may or may not outperform expectations.

Again i'm not arguing that they'll be big pieces to the team but 1) you mentioned if our rotation stays healthy..we've seen last year that bodies matter 2) Batie and Dadika can shoulder the load..we've seen last year that that's not the case. Players that can avg. 4-5pts in smaller conferences would absolutely add depth to our team in case of an emergency, as well as practice

We're definitely in a bad spot any way you look at it. The roster is thin at guard and if any of our bigs goes down we're looking at another difficult situation.

Batie and Dadika are clearly not able to compete at this level.

There is PLENTY to choose from.

That want to play a reserve role at Rutgers? Norville Carey just committed to Rider. Kids want to play. Not be a 4th guard or forward in their last season.
Um if the right person comes in there will be plenty of minutes available. Of the three freshmen only Thaim should be playing significant minutes. But right now all three will be forced to play, just like Goode last year.

Are you saying that someone like Johnny Zuppardo, a small forward who shot just under 37% from 3 last year, wouldn't want his minutes increased and play in the B1G?

Or someone like 6-11 and former Rivals 150 player Chad Rykhoek can't find minutes at center?

I can do this all day.

Same reason someone who wanted increased muntues picked St Bonaventure over a Rutgers. Playing time and a chance at the postseason.

I know of the grad transfers available and if the staff had legit interest they would have taken visits. Dude it's almost mid-June!

We have Freeman, Doorson, Sa, Thiam, Diallo in the frontcourt. Yes most are raw or coming back from injury but kids want to play. There's no clear path to playing time and I don't believe the staff is going to promise it to anybody no matter what they were ranked in 2013.

It's not an attractive destination for graduate transfers. Yet I'm sure we'll debate this all the way to August.

Thats my quandry...I don't understand why we haven't heard of anyone associated with us...We got Lumpkins in Rice's first season after the FHJ failure that was just as bad as the Jordan failure...there has to be someone who would want to play

Its almost as if the staff doesn't want 5th year seniors...which baffles me....

Why not play the guys who you may need beyond this season? I'd rather develop Diallo and Doorson over a rental player who's still available for some reason this late in the ball game.

Maybe after the Francis visit we hear about a 5th year. I don't know.

Because we are 4 injuries away from a 25 loss season...In which one player is already in a boot and another hasn't been cleared to play.... I'm not saying we need to win the B1G but if we go backwards in year 1 of Pikiell the road to success may be impossible for him....

Most teams are 4 injuries away from 25 loses. If all of our bigs get hurt again we are going to lose bad. It is what it is. Hopefully Diallo and Doorson are back and healthy. Diallo already played end of year and should be fine. Doorson is coming along good was well. Yes foot injuries are tough, but he has had a LOT of time to recover.

It's going to take years to clean up the mess Ed made. We just have to accept that.
No it won't. Let it play out. The staff knows exactly what they are doing. This season will require that the team stay healthy to have success, but beyond that we should no longer be depth-challenged.

I'm sure the new coaching staff is working hard to bring in another player for 2016.The problem remains closing the deal which has been an ongoing problem for the mens basketball program.Pikiell must show marked improvement this year in recruiting and playing competitive basketball or all the positive press will quickly disappear.Perception matters and at Rutgers that is a problem for the basketball program.

I know the roster begs for two 5th year seniors....

But...we have 10 underclassmen on the roster for 2016-2017 that ALL are scheduled to return for 2017-2018

There may be to something to building some chemistry by not addingthe type of 5th year guys that we will really attract that will be looking for minutes (and points)...and not be around in a year.

Big benefit is practice depth...IMO

I still remain in the minority...but I really like the players that we have. It's not a perfect roster...but we have some basketball defens.I think if they are coaches coach this right in the macro game (especially on demanding and improving the defense)...and have a big offseason on individual skills and S&C, that we are going to have a .500 season even while they learn how to win...with the whole team returning in 2017-2018 with three new players for the opporunity to improve upon that

.

This can not be said enough. In most cases adding a 5th year senior goes against everything a team in building mode is trying to do.

Most College basketball teams are in constant chemistry building mode, it does not matter if it is a freshmen, transfer, JUCO or 5th Year Senior. Most teams are bringing in multiple players each year. It is the job of the Head Coach to make sure anyone coming in is a good fit, chemistry wise. If not, you don't bring them in. The coach has to be able to determine if on court chemistry can be built, short or long term.

Then, there is chemistry within the program. I'm pretty sure there are dozens of examples of guys that wanted to play at Rutgers or some other school but their official visit determined they were not a good fit. That's when you take a pass.

At this point, just bank the ships for 2017. If the staff can even convince a grad transfer to come here, then that would provide some depth.

I'm sure he got on campus and asked to see the Basketball Practice Facility to see how it compares to what he used at Florida for the last few years. He was then taken to a room to look at blueprints.

Hopefully, In 12-18 months we won't have this problem. Recruits will be able tour a state of the art Practice Facility.
