Well since we are going to be linked for a while...Durkin/Ash article.

Durkin and more importantly his staff are definitely the better recruiters but I think Ash and his staff are going to be able to develop talent better...should be fun to see how our two programs fare!

Durkin is an old looking 38 year old. RU's coach is better looking.

It will be interesting to see how the 2 philosophies work out. Durkin went for as many big name assistants as he could, early returns in recruiting are good. Ash went for the no name up and coming assistants, which has also worked well but not as good as MD. I think Ash's plan is the correct long term approach.

I disagree big time. Durkin was national recruiter of the year for a reason. We all know recruiting is the lifeblood of successful programs.

It's not like Meyer hired Schiano because he was a up and comer and that's the smarter way to go. If you can get former head coaches on your staff you do it. Especially if they were really successful as a position coach or coordinator and recruiting in an area you want to hit, but maybe weren't the right guy to run a program but they will do great for you as an assistant.

  • Mike London hits up all of Virginia.
  • Pete Lembo although he was a head coach, he's actually really smart guy and a great special teams coach and Durkin works with special teams too, Lembo is not known as a big time recruiter.
  • Schaefer was the DC and i think he had to leave for health or personal reasons, left on good terms, and Andy Buh is a up and comer from Stanford/Kentucky.

That's it for big names, everyone else is pretty much a up and comer or a grizzly old knowledgeable veteran so to speak for Maryland.

Maryland has had most of its best recruiting come from two up and comers in Rahim and Beatty. I think Durkin's way is the same as Ash's having head coach knowledge on staff, up and comers, and coaches who really know their craft. I just think Ash wasn't able to secure any big names just now, he will. Ash alone can recruit pretty well, but he'll need more help.

The B1G East will be very competitive and poor Indiana, but MD and RU have enough home grown talent that with good coaching we will contend for conference championships. The main reasoning is OSU and UM are great, but like the SEC West, if everyone gets very competitive you'll see teams rise and fall a lot more in this division, but OSU and UM will usually still finish at top. I just see MD way ahead due to Under Armour and Durkin's recruiting ability, I see us challenging MSU & PSU within a year or so for 3rd or 4th.

The article mentioned that Rutgers has had three 5-star recruits since 2000. The only one that I know for sure was Anthony Davis. Who were the other two? Was Savon Huggins 5 stars?

I do not deny that recruiting is the top factor in winning but to be honest, everything is just an opinion at this point. Come back to this board at the end of the year and then we'll have a much better idea of how each staff performs. No one has played a game yet. For all we know, they can both be crappy coaches.

Not real impressed with Buh. He was a disaster at Cal.

IMHO one thing Durkin has working for his favor at the moment is that non-UM residents of Maryland look more positively at the school than non-RU New Jersey residents. But that can change.

Did Durkin have any relationship with London, Lembo or Schaefer prior to this? I think Durkin went for big names but they were not guys he necessarily has worked with before. Ash may not have chosen the most high profile names but every coach he has either worked with him before/or came recommended from someone he trusts (Herman).

The problem with former head coaches is that they will be looking to move back to the top job as soon as possible. I think both teams need stability in the coaching staffs.

Man this will be fun comparison to look back on in 4 years on which approach was more or less successful. No doubt the Under Armour money is feather in the cap Maryland was already in major conference and switched to to another major conference so I am not sure of the unlimited upside. RU was in a weak Big East and then the AAC when it decided to get serious about Athletics. I hope this division becomes the like the SEC West where each team is very strong year in and year out.

Durkin had no prior relationship to London & Lembo but knew Schaefer from their time together at Stanford.

Texas Longhorns.
Well that one went right over your head.[eyeroll] I'll give you a little help

Hint: It was a jab at your joke of an OOC schedule in 2016. Basically it's crème puff central.

I have no ill feelings at all about Maryland, feels more like brothers. But both programs know they're gonna have to get the better of each other to survive in this division. Maryland knows they have to be better than Indiana and Rutgers while Rutgers knows they have to be better than Indiana and Maryland.

No, I understood exactly what you were saying...and you're correct. It is a weak OOC.

The Texas reference was just saying next season (2017) won't be as weak.[cheers]

If you hire high profile guys you get people (we assume) that can get their job done. If you hire low profile guys you get people (we assume) that are bought in to your vision, hungry and moldable. Both ways can work depending on the head coach, and both have risks. Ash made the choice that was right for RU, especially given that we don't have people throwing money at us like at MD. Also, throwing money at problems don't always fix them. As a final thought, recruiting isn't everything. Notre Dame, Michigan and Penn State recruit the crap out of us and they still proved that with the wrong coaching you can still be pretty subpar. Hoke, Franklin, that fat guy at Notre Dame...man the talent they had to work with... How many 4 and 5 stars were on the field when Michigan lost to App State?

That brings us to my completely unbiased, totally scientific prediction which you can take to the bank...RU will flourish for years to come, and MD will be in the doghouse changing coaches again in 4 years.
