Often you see programs hiring offensive and defensive analysts. Are these hires really analysts? Or is there a loophole that allows programs to hire these guys for non-coaching purposes (mentor specific players or coaches, recruiting, glad-handing, fundraising, giving the program a big-time feel, programs "taking care of" their own or friends of the head coach, expanding recruiting connections in geographic areas). Some programs have a football staff (coaches and support) that rivals the size of the actual roster.
These were seen recently at the FootballScoop site ...
Notre Dame: Jeff Burris, a former All-American for the Irish, has joined the staff as a senior defensive analyst.
Burris looks like he has strong ties to his native South Carolina.

Arkansas: Former Montana State head coach Rob Ash has been named an offensive analyst on Bret Bielema’s staff. Ash is the all-time leader in wins at all three of his head coaching stops (Montana State, Drake, and Juniata College).
