"What is your problem?"

Wasn't the decision to play Laviano part McDaniels? If we lose to Kansas the press should run Flood and McDaniels out of town.

we have an awful head coach and an even worse defensive coordinator... not hard for the press to attack us. this isn't a witch hunt.

the coverage was plenty positive when schiano built us up. you don't make multiple covers of magazines if it isn't.

The press has been forever hostile towards Rutgers. Try living in another area and see the difference in how local teams are covered.

If you read his lips, words to Laviano.
Saw that also. But Laviano gives us the best shot at being 1-0. Let's leave arm strength out of this, because we know that answer, how bad is Rettig's decision making if this is our best option? Rettig must trip over the sideline every day in practice because Laviano doesn't have it.

I don't get worked up about which QB plays. And I'm generally patient with things like coaching and player-performance. And I don't like to bash the players even when they perform badly.

But...

While I'm going to go back and re-watch the game on DVR, my initial impression was that today's performance by Laviano was his worst yet. Regardless of the positive outcome of the game.

I actually saw both good and bad QB play in all the other games so far season (even PSU, although there was obviously lots of bad there). Hell, I even felt that the first INT today was at least half the fault of the receiver for taking the outside (out the back of the end-zone) rather than cutting inside the defender. I think Carroo would've easily had that ball for a TD easily.

But Laviano's decision making today was very poor. He didn't find some open receivers and he was way too late w/several of his throws. Against a better team, he would've been picked off at least 4-5 more times today. A bright spot is that he put his mobility to good use.

I don't mean to beat up on the kid, nor am I certain Rettig would be playing better, given a chance. But if it were me coaching, after this game, where it seemed to me that Laviano regressed, I would give Retting a chance and how he does.

I wonder if that quote is indicative of a feeling that might lead McDaniels to push for a change.

Yeah um Ohio State fired Tressel and TTFP fired Paterknow and UNC fired Butch Davis and no one besides their own fans were making excuses.

You think Jim Mora can get away with writing an email saying he's breaking the rules? Steve Alford was getting shredded in the press and the season didn't start. Sarkisian was criticized for making fun of ASU and ND.

But how dare anyone ask about 7 arrests and academic fraud....

He has to realize he is throwing to Scarff and not Caroo.

The Kansas DB was backed almost all the way to being out of bounds. A D1 receiver has got to know that he cannot make a legal reception if he runs out of bounds and comes back in for the ball. Any D1 receiver on the field should have known to break inside the DB on that pass (edit: because there was virtually no chance of receiving it from behind the DB without going out of bounds).

It was a jump ball, with the DB having the better positioning. Scarff had the opportunity to make a play but he didn't. You don't throw jump 50/50 balls to your walk-on TE.

You are downplaying what those situations are with other coaches. Sarkisian wasn't simply making fun of ASU and ND. Their fans could not care less about that. It's all about his record.

I'll concede the point. In part because, at that stage of the game, throwing the ball away would've been perfectly acceptable. And in part because yes, the QB should know his receivers.

Nonetheless, that INT was not, IMO, as bad a decision as some of the actual completions Laviano lucked into today. We suffered through this w/Nova.

Maybe it's already happening, but a coach or two has to get up in Laviano's grille and scream at him to stop forcing passes. Sure, if we're down a couple TDs w/time running out, that's the time to take some chances. But with a lead and plenty of time, throw the damn ball away.

He has a better record than Flood, committed a lesser transgrassion, and is questioned. That is the nature of the beast. The idea that Flood is more scrutinized compared to other coaches is nonsense. I would buy that overall in the past RU took heat it should not have. But not this time, Flood crossed many lines and put it in writing.

You're like a dog with a bone. It's not like anybody here can do anything about Flood. What do you hope to accomplish with all the venting and angst?

GRRRRR Flood GRRRRR Flood GRRRRR Squirrel!

He is "questioned" because he isn't winning championships. It's how SC rolls. They don't care what he does, just that he wins. Carroll got em on probation and was banging coeds. They love him. Very simply, because he won.

Um yeah actually we can. But first off, the fans that think that Flood is infallible need to wake up.

Well neither is Flood, and not only is he not, but he is taking down the entire program.

The program is faltering because the administration and fans allow outside influences to do so. Flood is an average coach who is providing more than he is paid to do. Would I like a new coach? Sure, if the administration had any balls they would get one. But they don't have any balls so Flood, some other neophyte unproven coach, it's all the same.

Either way, crying about it incessantly isn't doing any good.

I don't see too many people saying he's infallible. And if you want to change something, write to Julie and/or donate some money for a new coach. Right now, you're ceaselessly whining at people who have no authority to change a damn thing. Would letting people have a day or two off on the subject kill you?

No no no.

See, the outside influence was right the whole time. See our fans do this thing, just like when Mike Rice was suspended, oh it must not be a big deal. But actually it is. Actually what happened then and now was and is a big deal.

We have about 25% of fans with what you can call "Happy Valley Syndrome." You have Happy Valley Syndrome when someone outside the bubble of your existence attempts to insert facts into your life that derail a narrative that you have created of how things are, and then you lash out at that person, instead of realizing the holes in the narrative. Oh Joe/Kyle bad? No, because success with honor/man of integrity. You must have an agenda. Anyone who differs from my narrative is some deviant fifth column...

The SL was right for once, get over it, Flood sucks, on and off the field, he is absolutely not worth his salary, and we could hire the NBHS coach and I bet he could beat Kansas and Norfolk State and not have 7 arrests and daliances in Princeton. Emails, arrests, win and loss, these are FACTS, not whiney narrative. It is literally impossible for anyone to somehow be a worse coach in all of those facets, you would be hard pressed to find even one.

Save the wahbumbalnce on the administration, Barchi played sports and JH came from a winning department and guess what, Schiano and CVS were and are among the highest paid in their fields.

It is Flood, all Flood, the whole time. Wake up.

I give up. We're more likely to see the leaders of ISIS celebrating Hanakkah then you giving your personal anti-Flood jihad a rest for a day.

While I have not hidden my dislike of everything about our offense.. I have to say I am disturbed by the D as well in few aspects...

First - I think we have improved with our willingness to blitz Kansas.. a big change from the last home game... so kudos on that. Football is an aggressive sport and we need to be more aggressive across the board.

Now my main problem vs teams like WSU and Kansas who want to go no-huddle.

Substitutions: The rule is, if the offense subs guys in, they have to give the D time to sub. Many times both WSU and Kansas subbed guys in and we just kept our 11 out there. We need a defensive assistant watching for offensive subs going in and we need to send in subs right away. Several times this would have resulted in the offense needing a time out because the play clock was winding down.. but the main reason is to control when they are allowed to snap the ball.

It is a very simple concept that we should absolutely have in place. It is incompetent to not use this tool when facing hurry-up offenses.

The dismissal of that from some people here shows a limited knowledge of college football

Good ol, every program in the nfl, ncaa and even most high schools have people working on opposing personnel groups and sub packages.
When teams don't sub too much on defense, it usually means a lack of depth.
Well, we do have a lack of depth in the secondary of course because of the arrests- otherwise the secondary would have been deep and talented.
Linebacker is a little thin, especially with the TJ taylor injury.
On offense this is the best depth we've ever had on the banks. 2qb's, 4 RBs, 4 TEs and after our top WR is suspended, our wr play has remained steady because of great play from Patton and agudosi (and grant). We have good pretty good substitution depth on offense.
