Where are they now? Update on Kevin MacConnell and his son

There are a number of people who worked for RU Athletics over the years who will tell you Kevin wasn't the nice guy Tara claims he is. He was like Fred Gruninger Junior. Kissed up to the people who could help him and had no use for you if you couldn't. Thank God he never became AD. He would have been worse than Julie.

I know it seemed like that to some folks regarding Kevin. You have to understand that he worked 18 hour days for RU and got a lot accomplished behind the scenes that Fred had no clue of how to accomplish. He didn't have time for the petty nonsense that some fans expect as he was doing the work of two people.

And later he worked for the most demanding person ever to be employed by Rutgers in Greg Schiano who thought so highly of K Mac that he was the first person Greg asked to join him in Tampa.

Good read no matter how you feel about Kevin.
Nice to hear how Brett MacConnell is doing.

One think about this board, if a poster claims the sky is blue , a short time later another poster will bitch about the clouds they see in it.:D

what was Kevin McConnelll doing during Rice's basketball practices

Probably the same thing the people buying tickets at the ticket office behind section 118 were, the same things the beat writers were doing, the same thing people in the marketing dept. in the RAC were doing. Walking from one persons office to another, chatting with friends and colleagues and peeking a glance at the practice floor.

Remember that Murdoch's lawyers had about 90 seconds of tape over 2 seasons going in a loop.

I worked for Kevin during shea's last year and don't have a bad thing to say. He taught me fierce loyalty.

Abe Suydam was the most loyal RU basketball supporter of all time. He would watch many practices and would occasionally invite me to join him.. I may have attended 12 - 15 practices (most of them in prseason) during Mike Rice's 3 year tenure and can say that I never witnessed any bad behavior from Mike. He did come down verbally on players at times but nothing like what was on that tape.

Kevin MacConnell was a very hard-working guy, but he was also a condescending little pain in the ass hypocrite who deserved to be swatted like a bug. If "loyalty" is a synonym for "knowing whose ass to kiss," and it often is, not just here, then he was loyal. No doubt about that.

Full disclosure -- yeah, I had a couple of run-ins with him. For cause, to a point. But he is the ultimate faceless bureaucrat. Not worth a column.

And I have no problems with Tara, so I have no ax to grind with her. Just think her time could have been better spent.

BoroKnight - Condescending to you was most likely warranted. I will guarantee that if we conducted a poll of those that worked for Kevin or had any interactions with him, your view would be in the minority. He was the exact opposite of a bureaucrat as that term is synonymous with avoiding work.

So you say he knew whose ass to kiss, and I'm pretty sure everyone here agrees that is a huge part of the job, but you had your issues with him. Sounds to me like you may have a higher thought of importance to RU than he did and your are pissed about it.

I got to know Brett a little bit at RU, nice guy, I like to see him do well. Dude can ball too.

As someone who has known Kevin since my senior year in high school, and work for him, I have two words for you:

COMPLETE BULLSHIT

...although I didn't think he was the right guy to be athletic director, for us, at the time.

I worked as an usher at the RAC at the same time MaConnel did while a student. He was as big an ass kisser as I ever saw, and basically acted superior to all the other students who worked there. Somehow he managed to be given a permanent post at the media room door while the rest of us were circulated throughout the building. With his prime spot he sucked up to the media and the staff of the Nets in hopes of landing a job after graduation.
I never had any contact with him while he worked for RU so I can't comment on what kind of job he did. No doubt he loves his Alma Mater but he was not very popular among the student ushers back in the day.
