Why Did DC Leave Before Bowl?

Because he's now the head coach of UMass?
And maybe, just maybe he wants to start his new job - his first crack at being a 1A college head coach, which likely will affect his career trajectory for years (or forever) - on the right foot. I don't even understand the question and I remember how bad it looked for both Shea and Ash that they didn't start immediately at RU, especially when there was so much work to do. Zero issue with Coach H leaving immediately and wish him well.

I don't understand why our DC left before the bowl game. Was there a falling out between he and Schiano?
The situation just doesn't make sense. Do any insiders know the details?
He opted out, he has a new job, new commitments. No different then GS signing with TB on 1/26/12 and National Signing Day was 2/1/12

Most coaches leave to go to their new jobs to hit the ground running and it's all the more imperative in present day CFB because of the portal and such. You're behind the 8 ball right off the bat even leaving before bowls, forget about after. The playoffs are pretty much the only reason a coach sticks around and in some instances probably hinders their hiring prospects because the hiring school wants to get moving as soon as possible too for the same reasons.

As to buyouts, it would be very unusual to see one for a promotion Sideways move, yea maybe but for a promotion to HC would be rare.

Do you really want an employee to stick around after they told you they have a new job lined up? I come from a finance background where you are escorted out after meeting with HR. No need to have someone half assing it in your locker room.

Don't assistants usually have one year contracts?
Used to be awhile ago but just like HC contracts have gotten inexplicably longer so have assistant deals, although I don’t see them as detrimental to financial health as the HC contracts. 2 and 3 year contracts are fairly usual these days.

What the hell does that have to with anything? Coaches stay on for Bowl games all the time. UMASS wasn’t going to a Bowl game ..as they haven’t for 20 years. Signing class was long over.

Coaches also leave before bowl games all the time - it's not like this is anomalous. Generally coaches stay for CFP games, which the Rate Bowl certainly was not.

The transfer portal for FBS opened on 12/9 and closes again on 12/28... why on earth would Harasymiak be spending his time prepping his former team for a bowl instead of working to assemble his current staff and looking to build out his roster through the transfer portal?

Name another new HC from this season that stayed.
I totally agree with White Bus. If an assistant has a good relationship with the head coach he doesn't leave the head coach, who helped him attain a more favorable position, high and dry for one last game. At no time have I read or heard Coach Schiano state he will miss his former DC, or that it will be difficult to replace his expertise, or to play the bowl game without him. Maybe it's just Schiano's arrogance about his knowledge of defense. If it was; he really failed our defense in that bowl game as a coach! I still think there was something more to the story.

You actually are not agreeing with White Bus. Don’t want to put words in White Bus’ mouth but he is saying the opposite of you.

Huh??? You aren't agreeing with me! I said the complete opposite. No new HC stayed with their former team this year for a bowl game. Add that to starting this thread and you are having a very bad day!

I wish there was a way to see what monikers are associated with an ip address. There are way too many people that post with similar styles that pop up. That guy and another in this thread and others are eerily similar.

What was Coach H’s buyout? Or maybe he did not have one in his $1 million contract.
Three buyout scenarios in Harasymiak's contract based on the date he quit;

1) Assistant position at B1G or SEC school - 40% of $1,250,000 current salary, or $500,000
2) Assistant position at another school - 20% of $1,250,000 current salary, or $250,000
3) Division 1 head coach position or NFL position - zero

As some tried to make you understand he left before the bowl because of his new responsibility
leaving gave Joe a head start doing HC job and helps the program that hired him as their HC to avoid falling behind in the recruiting process which had a good chance of happening if he stayed because if he stayed he'd have less time to convince HS and portal players Massachusetts was a good fit for them,
especially with players who are in the portal where quick action is crucial to getting them to come
especially to a losing program like the one that hired him.
The Raye bowl isn't the playoffs and when minor bowls like that are played the programs that are playing in them know the assistants they have that were hired as HC at other programs have an obligation to their new employer that supersedes being at the upcoming bowl game coming up.
In 2021 Rob Smith was RU's DC and he left before Rutgers played it's Gator Bowl game
after accepting the DC position at Duke

Could explain the epic failure of our Defense in the 2nd half.
Been thinking a bit on this. I think it went this way:

GS1.0 could have stepped in as DC because it was HIS defense.. his system.

Most here wanted GS2.0 to be less of a micro-manager, and I think the defense was clearly NOT his defense. No pre-snap shifts for example.

I'd guess this led to an inability to coach it as he would have in his own system. The D players are not used to his control and maybe he couldn't make adjustments.

I am more worried about KC and the offense.. that was a messed up second half. KC and AK failed.. big time.

How many times in the last 10 years has Rutgers scored 40 plus points. How many have they lost scoring 40 plus.

He also said he needed to get there to assure current players before they jumped into the portal.

It’s a totally different rusticating than it was even a.handful of years ago. With the portal a coach has to get to campus asap.

Stay for basically an exhibition game rather than get started as a new HC? Why would he.
