PoSU O-line lost a major player.
LT Andrew Nelson will be out this week. Who is he? He was the RT in the Temple game while #73 Paris Palmer “No. 2 JUCO OT” was the LT, as I thought this transfer #73 was going to save the O-line. But as Matt Millen says he was responsible for 5 of the sacks in the Temple game which totally I disagree with, #73 was only responsible for 3 and the then RT Nelson accounted for 1 and Hackenberg was at fault in my book for at least 4 for holding the ball too long. Matt was covering for his shaky QB. All said and done #73 came back in the Buffalo game to show he still did not do his assignment. One he either does not know the playbook or he has lead feet and just does not get to his assignment fast enough. Bottom line PoSU will have trouble running the ball and maintaining good blocks long enough to pass protection. Poor blocking leads to rushed passes, which leads to rattled QB play.... formula for failure.
Our Defense will not play an 8 man coverage like we did with WSU.
We should return to our blitzing-stunting package, as this is a more conventional team. This is good for RU-D. As Hamilton’s loss will not be felt as much. We have some very good players in rotation and if we keep everyone fresh we can pressure their poor O-line play. Please understand PoSU O-line can and did make some good holes but more times than not they missed assignments. Barkley is a good back as we tried to get him. He must be stopped at the line.
Our Passing game without Carroo?
Carroo had only 17% of all catches in WSU game, while Grand had the most with 5. Chris Laviano completed 79.3% to TEN different receivers. It would appear Chris throws to the man who is open. Good sign with Grant, Agudosi, Patton, Arcidiacono, Flanagan and Scarff <(Where did he come from? Good pick up). With safety valves of Goodwin, Bergen out of the backfield our OC is making good calls and spreading the ball around a lot! Carroo loss should not reduce the team productivity. Yes he merits double coverage but WSU did play a lot of man-on-man with him.
Which is the more penalized team?
Yes RU has 20 penalties in 2 games and Ped state has 13 but they average 8.2 years/penalty while we are at 8 yards/penalty. So statistically, Rutgers must produce 56 more yards per game to just break even with the TARS (Team Across the River Sucks, {the is silent}) We lost 2 TD last week due to penalties, we cannot afford any mental errors to be successful this week.
Less is best!
A Rutgers win will be predicated on ball control and 3 turnovers last week cannot happen this week. Let’s call Laviano WSU game like a Nova début. Yes, we all remember Nova passing the ball to his own foot, and throwing the ball past the line of scrimmage. In the excitement of the game $hit happens. Yes Chris’ two turnover did cost us 10 points. That said good QBs learn from their mistake and do not repeat them. We will see how good Chris is Saturday.
Summary: Reduce penalties and turnover we product +14 and +10 points, respectively. This alone against a team that is averaging 18.5 points a game should be enough to win. So if we only reduce errors by one half and put that on top of what we are scoring 48pts/game that would be an even 60 point we put on the state Penn crew! As 2 games are bad statistically foundation, I put in a 50% fudge factor and we still score 30 Points which should be enough to beat this low scoring team.
Rutgers wins 30 to 25. They get an extra TD because they are at home and our green DBs blow a cover.
Go Rutgers, Just play your game and you will win!
