Why?

It does seem to be getting a bit arbitrary. I wish I had the ability to just axe what I don't like.

That said, in.

You guys are really working hard at getting this board shut down.

Explain yourself.

We want to have a legitimate discussion on why the RVision position was given to somebody other than a Rutgers student or grad - AFTER Jon Newman went on a $30k fundraising kick to pay for "student-produced programming".

Here is the deal. There is a core, a small but vocal core, who have trouble having an intelligent discussion. Posts go off topic. They get inflammatory. Names are called. Threats are made. We delete posts within a thread, and people post the same stuff again. Eventually, the thread gets deleted because we can't be on here pruning posts all day. At some point, people have to get the sense of when enough is enough and give it a rest.

Except with regard to this topic, that hasn't happened.

The last two threads that got deleted tonight hadn't gone off the rails and were (perhaps surprisingly) strongly on topic.

So I don't really accept your explanation.

suppression of words you don't like or don't agree with, rather than allow the discussion, why not delete it, a case study in censorship, countdown 10, 9, 8, 7.......

Ask yourself this: why have a number of other sites closed down their free boards?

Personally, I really want to have this discussion - and I will allow as to how it shouldn't have anything to do with Macy Garder, personally.

Newman raised money from people for RVision.

For "student-produced programming".

Why did we hire somebody from outside the school for the RVision job? We claim, as others have noted, to have one of the premier communications schools. I find it hard to believe that there were no in-house candidates worthy of 4 minutes a day in front of a camera.

Nobody has a problem with people expressing their opinion that the position should or shouldn't be open to RU students, or questioning whatever happened to the RVision project (I'm pretty sure that guy still posts here now and then). It's a legitimate discussion. The discussion was not the issue. I don't know how many times I can say it.

You mean the ones that don't have any traffic? Those sites?

Don't get into an off-topic pissing match with me about the business of New Media, because you'll lose and succeed in doing nothing but derailing the thread (which might be your goal).

Then leave the thread open long enough to have the discussion. If it turns into a bitchfest about Macy, then delete the posts and ban the offenders. Period end.

But as far as I'm concerned, the business of how Rutgers staffs these opportunities and the rules by which Mr. Newman may or may not play is in play and is the topic of serious discussion.

Follow-up threads often get deleted for one reason - we don't have 'round the clock moderator coverage, and if a thread goes downhill once, any future incarnation of it tends to go downhill.

First of all, thank you to the couple of people who sent me a nice, reasoned email on the subject. I am away this week, so I have tried to reply whenever I have had access to a computer or a good signal on my phone.

With that said, I will open up a new thread for clean, well thought out, rational discussion. If it gets inflammatory, then it will get locked.
