5 more wins? Doable but difficult. Here's the reality. Basketball is such a team sport where familiarity is so critical. Of the 11 players who have seen minutes this year, 8 are newcomers.
2 starters, Johnson and Freeman sat out last year. 2 others, Diallo and Doorson, sat out a full year as well. 2 are true freshman, Thiam and Omoruyi. Gettys was a role player, now starting for the first time in his career. And Sa playing at this level for the first time.
Which leaves 3 "veteran" players, 2 of which are sophomores, Sanders and Laurent, and of course junior Williams.
All led by a mid major coach going thru the conference for the first time.
The 11-2 bakery run was fun. Especially for such a success starved fan base as ours.
But this is a "Mulligan" year if there ever was one.

This team is 100% more fun to watch than last year's but the talent is not there yet. We should all be happy that the early season schedule contained ZERO WTF losses and was enjoyable. RU will still steal a game or 2 or 3 in the B1G, but RU is still 2-3 years away of getting to the level where there is usually a legit 50/50 shot to win conference games.

I really, really don't understand how so many thought we were going to reach or finish above .500 at 11-2 in the OOC. Great start, yes, but we played the 260th rated schedule in the nation and we STILL can't make layups. Pikes is changing things, for sure, but we've got a LONG way to go.

Playing in a power conference requires talent that Rutgers lacked in the Big East and now the Big Ten.Coaching can improve defense and rebounding but shooting is a skillset that most players already have .Recruiting needs major improvement and is the only way Rutgers can become relevant in college basketball.

Rutgers did not lose to Delaware State like the Johnnies or Gardner Webb like Nebraska. Beat the teams they should have. That is progress.

Okay, yesterday was a really bad effort especially offensively but not lazy on defense like some have posted. The Banks kid hit 3 threes in the first half from real deep and normally we will not get burned from that distance . Our defense has been a constant . I will take giving up 60 points as a bad effort every single game. Giving up on this team like almost every poster has done, saying we will win 1-2 more or 4 at most, is really premature. You are never as bad as your worst game, yesterday, or your best game, Central Connecticut State, but somewhere in between. Coach knows where we are struggling and will do more to tweak things and despite the horrendous shooting from every distance this year, I expect a number of our players to play better and shoot better as soon as their confidence improves.
Some of the tweaks in my opinion is to tweak the starting lineup , go back to Jonathan and Issa and make a real effort to get them looks or Jonathan to drive. Bringing Nigel and Mike off the bench gives us more of a microwave effect like Vinny Johnson of the Pistons. He can still play the 3 guards if the opponent goes small. The guards have to do a better job of entry passes to CJ and Deshawn. Deshawn sealed his guy about 4-5 times and either the guards or CJ did not get him the ball and he got frustrated. But we are not winning with his shooting only 4 shots a game. Everyone is saying he cannot handle the height in the Big 10, but I think as he continues to play through it , he will adapt , draw more fouls, and hopefully also dish it back out for a three . The Tate kid from Ohio State has done it at the same height and I think they have a similar skill set and neither one shoots the 12 footer. . Same goes for CJ, except he has to take that 10-14 foot jumper.

The major problem has been the turnovers , the totally unforced ridiculous ones. We do not shoot well enough to be averaging 15-17 turnovers a game . A small part of our problem I think is our spacing , as I believe it is too tight. I would spread the court and let Corey or Nigel create and then have Jon or Deshawn slashing in for the dish when Corey gets picked up by the bigs. Also, I think dishing to Mike when he is set after the penetration will improve Mike's accuracy to an even higher level. We do not want Corey going reckless or freelance but to penetrate to create fouls and to dish first and get to the hole second. Corey last year could have averaged 6 assists a game if any of our bigs could hold onto the ball last year and I think we have bigs that can catch his passes this year .
Finally, our team defense has been really good but the last 2 games our point guards have not harassed their point enough and both Wisconsin and Penn State got into their offenses too easily .Nigel has to become a pest like he has been for most of the year. I also think Coach playing so much man, tires us out , and yesterday he went zone a few possessions which worked, but I think he should make the 3/4 court trap more of a part of our defense with our length playing at the top of it. I think it will create more turnovers, giving us points , which we desperately need more of , plus get the crowd more energized, plus raising the intensity on defense sometimes gets your offense and confidence elevated.
I not ready to throw in the towel on this team. This conference is a bear but there does not appear to be a truly elite team but almost all the teams appear equal with no easy ones. Coach has a roster 10 deep that is not mismatched every night and everyone except Mike can play better.

we have been burned by 3s all year, what games have you been watching...we play lousy perimeter D....and the Big 10 is full of 3 point shooters and PSU isnt the best of them.

PSU scored 60 because they are bad, two bad teams played each other. Guess what? We are not keeping Michigan State to 60 or Minnesota or Purdue or Michigan. In the end, RU will not win a game unless they score over 70. Its not going to matter if we play a slower pace and the score is 60-42 instead of 80-62

I bumped my total to 5-6 conference wins when the non conference play was over. After seeing these first two games and then considering the play vs Miami/SHU and difficulties there, I am going to recalibrate that they will only win 2 or 3..maybe 4 if they really get a team on a bad night....right off the bat they lost the one game I counted on them winning...and now we have an idea that schools like Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Northwestern are much better than some were thinking. RU may not be a favorite in any game the rest of the year...thats scary.

Of course we've made progress, but please don't bring Nebraska into this after the two road scalps they got this week. We'd cut off our proverbial right nut to win in Bloomington and College Park.
I'd take one bad non conference loss to get two outstanding road wins like that.

I think in fairness, even with the flaws in this team, we haven't played up to par the last two games. I expect us to win at least half of our home games and at least one road win. I am not overreacting as I think we are better than we have shown the last two games.

We have been burned on threes by guards cheating down for the dig steal and not recovering, not from where that kid Banks was shooting them from. Go look at the Big 10 stats we are 6th with teams shooting 32.2%. I think our rotations and perimeter defense has been really good. It was against Seton Hall and it was against Wisconsin except for Corey and Nigel's cheating and not recovering in time.
I agree we are not winning games scoring in the 50's or even low 60's but we are allowing 62.3 points per game through 14 games and 66 averag after 2 conference games. I think we can keep conference teams to the mid to high 60's or low 70's . We have to score more period to win.
You have changed your predictions like a yo yo depending on what has happened last. First we were winning 3, then it was 4, then after the out of conference including Seton Hall it was 6. Now after 2 terrible turnover games with horrendous shooting it is back to 2-3, or maybe 4. Nigel was playing well, especially defensively and then leading us in scoring against Seton Hall and hitting 3 threes against Wisconsin and double figures , then having a terrible game yesterday. Most of recent posters here and on the Round Table that have not watched all of our games have buried him with negative statements . You should know better. Don't bury the team yet , still plenty of season to play .

Penn State was a big measuring stick game because they are likely 13th in league. I do not have confidence after I saw such a struggle they had. In their previous game vs Northwestern, the game was over in the first ten minutes and Northwestern coasted. All these teams have scorers, RU does not. We may be 6th in Big 10 but thats because of our schedule was full of creampuffs. Every single B10 school has a solid win, some two or three. We have lost against any quality team by double digits. My fear is we just are not good enough at this time despite closing the gap

I agree that was a terrible disappointment yesterday. I also thought the Wisconsin game was disappointing because we spotted them 10-12 point lead because of the turnovers. You are right as every team in the conference has one or more quality wins and we do not.. although we lost by double digits to Seton Hall and Wisconsin there were a lot of positives to take away from both Seton Hall with the 9 point halftime lead, and one possession game for most of second half, and against Wisconsin finally hitting some shots to cut it to 9 with the ball at the 8 minute mark and causing 3 -4 shot clock violations which would have been more if Corey stayed with Showalter. Yesterday was indefensibly from both a turnover and shooting perspective and a step back. But Coach's press conference after the Fordham game and after the Seton Hall game and the limited Wisconsin post game, was very upbeat and saying we were getting close. Even yesterday as exasperated as he was with our turnovers , he mentioned we had 2 of our best practices of the year. Gotta believe he not only thinks but knows we can play better and shoot better. That is what I am hoping for.
