Unfortunately due to my very busy schedule I was unable to make it to any games but watched a few on tv; My question especially for our 2 soccer experts is that in watching these games I just saw no control of the ball in the midfield and the other teams just seemed to dominate time of posession. Is this due to our midfield, youth etc? I know the coach has done a great job recruiting but do you think he can take us to the highest level? Just looking for some answers for those in the know. Thanks in advance

I don't understand how the question of 'getting to the highest level' is even a question after he took the team to a College Cup in 2015. He got there.

Missed opportunity last year with Casey Murphy redshirting, but lost to 2 seeded Georgetown who eventually went to the college cup.

Definitely a young team, but think of it this way, instead of rebuilding, they are reloading to an extent. Top 15 RPI and playing at a high level with a ton of underclass kids getting major minutes.

The appearance of losing the midfield is a Mike Oneill strategy of sorts. We play with three mids most others play with 4 . Since they have less ground to cover it will seem we are hopelessly defeated there. He wants 3 forwards pressuring the other reams back line and goalie

BUT...BUT... You dont get that effort every game. A week before we ran at the PSU defenders hard and even got the goalie to hit rushed shots. We had long periods with the ball in their zone. This week they were more casual. So the PSu fullbacks got to play at midfield, or even side of the field and we couldnt get out. It didnt escape him as he tried 7 girls at forward but only Colby was putting serious pressure on.

Personally if you dont watch religiously you would be unaware how important Kenie Wright is to the upfield progression of the ball on the left side. When she went down her replacement is more a stay at home defense-woman and all rhyrhym on the left side was lost.

Then Chantelle Swaby went down for 30minutes. Sso all ball movement upfield from the backs didnt exist. Ergo we could not escape our zone

Liken kenie, shock wise, losing your prepared qb 10minutes into the game. Prior to that it was an even game.
So the mid field answers........ preferred styles of play

Remember the strengt of the team is giving up only .25 of a goal per game. Mostly Casy but defense factors in also

Basically agree with ho26's response, especially re: Kenie Wright. However, not sure gpg is mostly due to Casey. She is a big factor, however our overall system & play is a big factor as well. We were very stingy last year as well with Jimenez in goal. And she was excellent.

Are we getting help with the incoming recruiting class to help give us more speed up the middle? I thought that some of the freshman were very fast and were going to increase our team speed

Some of our freshman are fast, but they are not playing in the middle. Can't speak too the speed of our in coming class. ho26 probably knows better.

All of the above is very interesting, but what I would like to know is, are our women getting an at-large bid to the tournament? I think they deserve it don't you?

Believe that they will. And yes.

You know like lacross Rutgers sems to get screwed during these tournaments
But i looked back and with our current rpi of number 12 teams have gotten at least one but mostly 2 home games
It should not matter if PSU or OSU wins and in fact the rpi should move lower.
Not a issue ifWisconsin wins although we did beat them the rpi might go down

Yes next year
Forwards lost Colby
forwards added Emily Harrigan an all american striker from Pittsburgh
Mya Daniels currently over 40 goals playing from Long Branch if you wish to follow in state tournaments Aoloani ( forgot last nameis injured and red shirting
Alicia D'Aoust is all New York State

Mids lost Chrisyy Monroy
Hayley Baer an attacking center mid. Hyley started as a mid at IHA ( state champs ) moved to home town Mahwah hs and , for the good of the team, she played defense for 2 years Now back at center mid. if she is what i saw three years ago she moves very well
Ciara Terrasso played in first 4 games then nothing. i think she is a red shirt/ or perhaps injured.. There isa story if you go to star ledger sports/ girls 2017nhs soccer About Nicole Binkley the other new mid. You may need to search bot its about the top 20 high school players.in nj

Defense Shea holland had been a mid at 14 but she played u15 and u16 n our national teams and was moved to defense and it stuck. I mention , even though this looks to be her best position , a move back to mid is not impossible
Coming into this year a girl came in injured and is red shirting. Off things that were said she had a shot to start. Her name is Jamie Frank
All american Jezlyn jiminez red shirted

Goalies Meagan McClelland has played internationally on the wnt u18 ( or u17 ) last year for 2months in the u18 world cup. Same club and Goalie coach as Casey. Will not play hs soccer as she is training with PDA and the uswnt ) age appropriarte) And a second 2018 goalie Emma Huntzinger coming in also

we lose Courtney Norton and of Course Casey
goalie red shirt Ferreira will be back and brianna Scarola will graduate So we had 3 open spots (i think ) and 5 graduates and 8 coming in . There might be room for a 5th year mid , or whatever is needed.

So looking at forwards 2019 is a small class but we have two striker commits. So while not suggest ing a damn thing it will be hard for Sayers, Starr, Hendley and maybe LaPlant to find time to play So in 2018 there are 11 strikers on the roster and 13 in 2019 . Historically kids see their roles diminish and transfer. Sorry to say Mike needs this to open spaces in the 2019 class. Too many strikers and with moneme and Wright leaving in 2019 he will need more defenders I hope that helps and if there are questions i am just a fan but will try to answer

thanks so now my other question is in playing only 3 midfielders are we playing 3 forwards? because when I watch I see alot of times there are through balls to Ali but she seems to be the only one up there when these balls go through?

ho26, as you may have gathered I am high on LaPlant. She is fast, has excellent skills & a strong foot. She has played her 1st two years with bum shins, that's why you see her come out of games oftentimes. In addition, her confidence has not been there. Lately her shins have improved & her confidence is way after her two game winners down the stretch. Also she has made a quantum leap in her defensive play. As you know, Mike wants his forwards to come back hard. Next year if her shins are good & her confidence is high, the sky is the limit for her IMO.

With all the forwards we will have, one or more could end up as an attacking middie.

Yeah ..... obviously i dont favor the three forwards. Mike played thisn in high school 30 years ago. and me at the same school 50 years ago. The right outside forward is expected to be up attacking the fullback, but if a pass comes out get back very quickly to help in the mid., that would be Colby. She is sort of unique because of her speed but my reality, yours can be different, is we dont challenge their backs the way we should.

in 2015 the girls were much better at this and we kept it in their end. i think that was a big reason for our success that year. This year , except for 20 minutes a game you stop short. When you run at the goalie on a pass back you accerate and run at her . you dont hit her butyou want to draw her focus. This year our girls stop 15 feet short and go back upfield. there is no constant pressure. Thats why the Penn St girls were constantly at midfield or our zone.

I dont have anything against Brittany but she and Hendley have no foot skills. Facing you they cannot get by and someone needs to get her the ball in a spot where she gets off a shot.
Obviously this was a good.... not great year....... and you can live with them. Sayers, and Starr rarely see the field. The three girls coming in have, in analysis posted, those foot skills, better speed, Daniels and Harrigan have a sniper like mentality not present on this team. That is a half step is enough to plant and fire. .
Just dont think there are enough minutes for all these girls. We only have 3 scholies open in 2019 and they are taken. Mike is a nice guy but in a more competitive landscape three should relocate to free 3 more ships.

When i say snipers how did our girls do in the shootout vrs how well the PSU girls struck the ball

Not seeing what you see re: Brittany & foot skills. In Ohio State game she dribbled through 2 defenders & a tackle to score. Guess we'll see. Glad to see what you say re: Daniels & Harrigan.

Are we getting help with the incoming recruiting class to help give us more speed up the middle? I thought that some of the freshman were very fast and were going to increase our team speed

You do realize that speed doesn't always come into play as a true frosh - in ANY college sport - right? Don't get me wrong, posters on the football board bitching about our true frosh receivers don't get this either, but it's the truth. Very few true frosh make an impact, in any sport, anywhere, even if they have speed BECAUSE they've got to learn how to use all their tools, including speed, at this level. This is why, if and when you can, RS'ing is the best option.

Have to disagree vehemently on the statement about Brittany not having foot skills. To the contrary, she is extremely technical and gifted with the ball at her feet. She is very creative and her first step speed and acceleration from either side with the ball is off the charts, she has made her living and was heavily recruited because of her 1 v 1 skills, her ability to beat people off the dribble and her ability to score, yes her shins have been the main issue the past 2 years. Aside from her shins the other significant contributing factor is the lack of time on the ball because of the style of play. In fact, you get to see very little individual skill on the ball from most players and most goals are set up off distribution, a setup and a shot, its designed that way. But watching Brittany in ODP, Club etc. where the expectation was that she would keep the ball anywhere in the final 3rd and take on defenses and go at goal, there's few players that possess her ability Perhaps with her new found confidence, we will see it more. You do see glimpses of it in certain situations. But with Rutgers possession style soccer there's an intentional slow build up with a lot of passing. Also, the discussion about 3 forwards, variations of the 4-3-3 is still the most popular and successful formation in soccer and it morphs throughout an entire game looking like other formations, rarely are 3 players high, so Rutgers often has more numbers in the mid field. Hopefully, Rutgers gets Brittany's shins straightened out, as I agree with rudad02, if she can play pain free and get her minutes to 60 or 70, the sky is the limit, look what she did in limited minutes at less than 100%.

To add, from a statistical standpoint, Brittany averaged almost a goal per game per minutes played, think about that...... Making her by far the most efficient player, perhaps even in the Big 10, would have to do some research, but I would think she would also rank very high Nationally from an efficiency perspective. Hendley and LaPlant are very different type players as well, Brittany's first touch is impeccable, she is exceptional with her feet, and in small spaces she is a wizard. There's much more going on in a game that an untrained eye does not see. Here are a couple quotes I found about her technical ability (below), in addition, a few years ago I had the opportunity to speak with one if her Club coaches who won an NCAA championship and played on the National team, and she thought Brittany was one of the most technical strikers in the Country.
“Brittany may be quiet and unassuming but she is a handful on the field,” commented her ODP coach, Jason Weisberg. “She is consistently able to keep defenders on their heels. There are not many players who are as dangerous going to both sides with clean finishing technique and an uncanny ability to make something out of nothing and find a way to score. She is an exciting player to watch because if you give her an inch, she will change the game.”
“Brittany is a gifted, technical soccer player, with a great ability to find the net,”.

Killer, thanks for all the additional info on Brittany. Confidence, healthy shins, & playing time were the issues with Brittany. She now has the confidence[you can see it]. Playing time is increasing. As you say, if she can get the shins straightened out, look out. Also had seen in our stats that efficiency & goals per game re: playing time far outstripped any other of our ladies. Very valid point.
