I watched the express version of the game this week on BTN. A lot has been made of the over throw to Kroft and while this was a makeable throw, Nova was under pressure and could not really zip the ball. He pretty much had to throw it off his back foot and then lacked zip on the throw. It was certainly a makeable throw, but Nova was simply not a QB with touch. Derek Carr, for example, completes it, no doubt. So I would characterize this play as really symbolic of some of Nova's flaws more so than anything else. Not that he blew a throw he normally completes. This play was nowhere near the worst play in that game.
I think that the play after the Hackenburgh INT, where RU had great field position and decided to throw a bomb that wound up INT into double coverage was a far worse play. I would bet that this was not a case of Nova reading the defense and that Fridge decided that Nova was going to throw a bomb for a quick strike. I understand that if it was completed, it would have been huge and I also understand that for years, we all complained about the RU offense sitting on the ball and I also understand that PSU's defense was very good and Fridge thought he'd catch them off guard.....BUT that was a horrific turnaround and RU was in command 10-0 with the ball.
The missed tackle at the end was far worse than I had remembered. I had forgotten there were three players with a legitimate shot to tackle him and what in the world was the safety doing?? The only reason I hesitate to say this was the worst play of the game was that the CBs were young but the safety....geez.
