If there was a coach out there who was:
  • 84-6 over 3 seasons (with a streak of 41 straight wins)
  • 2x National Champion
  • Presided over the building of a $6M athletic center
  • Fills his roster with the top recruits in the country year after year
  • Has nationally televised games
  • Makes less than $150k a year
Would you take him?

Kevin Boyle? That's a gamble. From HS to the Big Ten Conference. Huge jump.

Yes, Kevin Boyle. Huge jump, but one I would take. He already runs a program that is arguably larger than Rutgers, knows the area, consistently wins, and is a better recruiter than anyone on our staff. It's a gamble that I'd make. If you measure this from a strict risk/reward measure, it's a slam dunk. I'd make this move tomorrow. It can't get any worse here.

No way. You need someone with college HC experience. No more FHJ type of hires.

Guys like Amaker or Lonergan are who I would be looking at as HC. This is all premature anyway since I see EJ getting this year and next year no matter what.

If he goes 6-26 he won't be back

Kevin Boyle cannot pass a background check. That's all I will say. There's a reason he has never gotten a college job.

Boyle always intrigued me. Unlike Hurley, he is not a great tactician but his kids are tough as nails and play their asses off. The recruiting aspect is not a slam dunk imo as there are relatively few top level HS programs. And he wont be coaching RU for 150K.

But he can work for a high school? The vetting (background, etc.) process for employment is more rigorous for a high school than it is for a college or university.

King Rice, has already beaten ND,UCLA, and USC. He probably is making a lot less than Jordan.

He also got roughed up the other day by Canisius.

I think he'll make someone a pretty good coach, although some have suggested he might be a little too much like the last Rice to coach at Rutgers for them to go there again.

King Rice has done a good job at Monmouth. But, RU has to aim higher than a low major coach who only has one breakthrough season.

Issue has been brought up many times over the years and the answer is HS HCs aren't going to turn RU around
Bob Hurley Sr's name has been brought up just as many times as Boyle's has and the answers the same for him. Just like Boyle when he was coaching HS in Jersey was the same bad choice he's as a Florida HS HC
Danny Hurley's name popped up when he was St Benedick's HS HC and making him the RU HC was a bad idea then .
Nowbecause of College coaching experience he would be a pretty good choice and if he brought his dad or Boyle as an assistant, then either of them might be good for Rutgers.
But neither would be good as the RU MBB HC if hired straight from HS.
They need to gain college experience either as a lower level HC or as an assistant on a college MBB staff.

Bob Hurley Sr is not going to go to College as a HC, but if Danny replaced Jordan maybe BobSr might consider joining his son's staff at Rutgers to help recruiting like Mike Miello did when he joined Schiano's staff when Greg was hired to be RU's FB HC.

Didn't Boyle get St Patrick's banned from NJ High School playoffs for violating practice rules? Not sure where he is coaching could actually be considered anything but a basketball factory. But I'll defer to those more knowledgeable than I.

Montverde Academy opened in 1912 an has pretty demanding academics. Although they recently eliminated football program, they have several other varsity sports. The basketball program just happens to be very good and generates revenue, but it is not a basketball factory.

The school in Florida that most in-state observers would possibly consider a basketball factory is Arlington Country Day.

Btw, the coach that Boyle followed at Montverde Academy is now an assistant coach at Georgetown.

I could see Boyle in that role-----but IMO going from HS to a HC in the Big Ten is too big a leap.

King Rice IMO would be fine------good recruiter , good pedigree , up tempo style that brings in people.

That resume isn't enough for you?high school basketball coaches who have won could be better than NBA coaches. NBA coaches aren't coaching as much.

Time to move on from this, unless AD Hobbs is Roy Hobbs.

The best HS coach in the country for the past decade has far better offers than ours waiting for him
after this season whether his team 4-peat's as national champs or not.
We spoke to Ohio State, Michigan State, and Villanova coaching staffs today for charity, and they all said
the ship has sailed for us to have hired him.

It is likely Hobbs hires NJ's own Chris Jent, if the montverde coach can't be persuaded.
My boss was part of the faction unification and key part of consensus was/
$$$ to make the changes this spring for men's and women's
hoops coaches and future playing facilities.

Hobbs has no respect for the candidates often mentioned like Coach Shamaker, or/
either of the Hurley's. just like he gave Schiano a low-ball offer, and a tight window to fill or kill.
He wants his own guys. or gals if he replaces Coach Stringer with a woman.

Better days are not that far off for the first time in 8 years for RU hoops!

If he goes against the likes of Izzo, Ryan, and Beilein in the B1G while being "not a great tactician", his tough as nails kids detached asses will get kicked all over the arena.
