Why are there different rankings for Tournament vs Dual? I guess it takes into account how you would be expected to perform under the different formats. Also, I assume some teams focus more on tournaments so they have a shot to win the NCAA, right?

Dual rankings are generated by running EVERY dual for EVERY school through the prediction engine, then coming up with the total W/L. (ie Iowa comes out as 76-0, while Rutgers is 67-9). Then it ranks those teams based on those predicted W/L records.

The tournament rankings take the ranking of every starter, and apply the NCAA points for where they'd finish, while ALSO adding in the predicted bonus points scored per wrestler. Then, rank based on total points predicted per team.

Both Dual and Tournament ranking pages contain a "Breakdown" link to see how all of this is derived.

Think about it this way. If you have 4 national champions and 6 D3 level wrestlers filling out your lineup, you’re going to lose just about every dual you’re in but still be a respectable team in a tournament. That’s an extreme way of explaining it.
