Without big play possibility, better defenses will shut down our running by stacking the box. That is why we didn't score against PSU. Sure Laviano had some success dinking and dunking, but eventually he made a mistake to stall a drive. Against better teams this will happen all year. We HAVE to be able to stretch the field, if only to keep the defenses from stacking the box.
I know the OL has to provide the QB time for a downfield pass to develop, but I am not sure Laviano has that in his arsenal...and the coaches know it. Hence the dink and dunk fest...
