I would be interested in seeing a breakdown based where each school finished.

We list champions but maybe one of the schools was the bridesmaid in 5 of the sports.

If we did a point tally with last being 0 pioints and 1st being 14 it may be very interesting to see where everyone finishes. I think Rutgers will be last or 2nd to last.

I just did a point tally for the Men's Sports (Women's to follow). Points awarded on finish in conference standings. If all 14 teams played the sport, the champion received 14 points and the last place team received 1 point. If only 6 teams played, the champion received six points, last place received 1 point, and the teams that did not sponsor the sport received 0 points. If two teams tied, they both received the higher point total (if 2 teams tied for second, champion received 14 points, second place teams each received 13 points, and then the next team in line received 11 points).

Teams that do not sponsor as many conference sports suffer in this scenario, as indicated by the zeros below.

Men's B1G Final Standings - 14 sports total

1. Ohio State - 111 points
2. Illinois - 100 points
3. Minnesota - 95 points
4. Iowa - 93 points

Maryland is a great example of a school that is either at the top of the standings at what its good at or isn't in the conversation at all. On the point total, Maryland finished 11th out of 14. Not very impressive at all. On the flip side, Maryland won 7 B1G Championships which was more than every other school except for Michigan, which won 8.

Your numbers are wrong for the Maryland and Michigan championships. You are counting both regular season and tournament championships. In some cases you are giving the schools two championships in the same sport.

The numbers are correct. The B1G gives championships in some sports for BOTH regular season and tournaments. I'm pretty sure all conferences do that.

Here is the B1G website listing the championships -

http://www.bigten.org/championships/2015-schedule.html

If, for example, Illinois gets credit for winning the regular season in baseball and Michigan gets credit for winning the baseball tournament, why wouldn't a team that won both in one sport (such as Wisconsin in Men's Basketball) get credit for both? The B1G awarded two different trophies.

I know the website, but you didn't differentiate the two.

B1GOSU and Lion8286, please take your bickering to another board.

Some programs are naturally going to be better represented by the point tally because they sponsor more sports.

Varsity teams:

Ohio State: 37
Penn State: 30
Michigan: 27
Rutgers: 27
Michigan State: 25
Indiana: 24
Iowa: 24
Minnesota: 23
Wisconsin: 23
Illinois: 21
Nebraska: 21
Maryland: 20
Northwestern: 19
Purdue: 18

Then, of course, Johns Hopkins as an associate member for lacrosse.

Just going to lay it out like this.

Maryland scaled back because we overspent on football while adding water polo and competitive cheer. We axed several sports.

We have kept the ones we are good at.

We still have women's soccer and wrestling, but they bring MD no real honors to speak. Some but not a lot. No one cares about the pretty good women's soccer we have or the decent wrestling squad we had. Both programs have been ranked in their history and been to the post season, but in the end the list people care about are:

*National Championships

*Bowl wins

*NCCA regional championships

*Heisman or best player in sport winners; for instance Tewaaraton award for women's lacrosse)

*Conference Champs (For the Big Ten the regular season best record, the ACC use to award it to the tournment champion conviently always held in North Carolina F them)

*Conference Tournament Champs (denotes right to go to post season)

*All Americans

These are the things you put in programs, walls, and in trophy case. No one really cares if you were ranked to end the season, or have a respectable program. You need some hardware or tangible acolades. So for me, kicking a few sports we never win at, is a no brainer if it helps football. Go look at Alabama, they don't support too many non-revenues. I would like to play all the major sports Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, Soccer, Tack and Field, Golf and our niche ones in Field Hockey and Lacrosse. Other than that don't waste our time and money.

So Rutgers didn't win anything, neither did Purdue or Indiana. Having good non-revenue sports are a luxury. So in 20 years no one will care how low som eof your teams placed, because several other schools didn't win anything.

Put it this way you have MORE national championships than Virginia Tech.
