So first I wanna backtrack a bit. With 14.9 seconds left we inbounded to McConnell and first their PG #55 Brooks swipes at the ball aggressively trying to steal or draw a foul but no foul called. Ron was right there watching the play and Brooks actually jarred the ball loose, but then McConnell regained it and got a pass off to Geo as Caleb Houstan was rushing in and flayling his arms to try to block the pass. He may have hit McConnell in the face a bit, or maybe not. Hard to tell. But then when Geo catches said pass, Houstan fouls him and is met with not only a ton of boos from the RAC crowd for fouling when the game is out of reach, but clearly you see RHJ in the background mouthing some stuff to Houstan, giving him the business. Now let me clarify something here... this is just couch observation sh#t. Who the heck knows what else may or may not have went on during the game with McConnell, RHJ, Houstan, Diabate, etc. but yeah, this was the visible stuff from TV.

So then Geo hits the 2nd foul shot and immediately McConnell and Houstan get their arms interlocked going for a potential rebound off a miss, and they ride each other into the sideline. When they disengage, Houstan shoves McConnell's arm off. Ref is watching but no whistle, which is fine because it seemed like pretty harmless whatever-type stuff. Then Dingus Dickinson sets the vicious unnecessary moving screen on McConnell. Total bullsh#t. Now all this time Diabate, the main guy behind the postgame fireworks, is on the bench, having fouled out earlier.

Game ends. You can clearly see from this video that B. Knight is absolutely livid. Fired up. He has to be restrained as he says something that seems to be in the direction of Diabate. Diabete gets fired up from it and then he, too, has to be restrained. And in the middle of this beef is what appears to be Michigan's Dir. of Player Dev. Jay Smith, who is shouting back at B. Knight and is also being somewhat held back. So those three seem to be the focus of the postgame stuff, at least per this angle.

And if you watch this vid in its entirety, Pike spends a LOT of time walking with Jay Smith after, seemingly cooling the situation down.

Personally I LOVE the fire from B. Knight as they really did pull some late game BS. He being an ex-baller, well, he gets it. That said, Pike is Mr. Nice Guy (I mean that in a complimentary way) so I'd imagine he's probably not entirely thrilled with Knight losing his cool like he did. I mean if nobody was there to hold them back, it could've been B. Knight and Diabete throwing down, with old man river Jay Smith probably jumping in. Mess, ha. I wonder if the league will try to review footage and take any action? Probably not, but you never know.

Here is the vid with great angle. Side note- Juwan missed a lot of the initial action and then didn't seem to care all that much after because he was busy congratulating all our players. And when I say all, I mean ALL. I don't know what to think of him TBH. I don't love some of his public comments and the way he seems to perceive us, but geez, if you allow yourself to just focus on him during this vid, he congratulates EVERYONE, even our student managers, ha. He makes sure he gets everyone. So there's that. Vid link here:

The during the game timeline was exactly what happened. I never saw Ron like that before.

too add Caleb got whacked in front of the RU bench I’d say with about 2 minutes left too. I think Geo calmed him down and put his arm around him.

The youngster that Ron was yapping at was running his mouth previously.

Much easier to see that on a laptop than on a cell phone. :)

It is interesting to watch it a few times and focus on different people. Pike spent a lot of time talking down the UM staffer, while Howard is congratulating our players. I wonder what Harper told him, because it looks clear that Harper was still worked up and Howard appeared to be nodding as if he was agreeing to what was being said, or something similar.

I don't think anything rose to the level where the league needs to be involved. Next game should be interesting though.
At the end of the day nothing really happened (nothing anywhere close to any punishment)

I mean even the screen wasn’t really “dirty”. In the context it was certainly unnecessary and totally douchey but at the end was just a screen. If in the middle of the game there would be zero mention of it

and the kid having the bizarre hissy fit - again - it was just that - a bizarre hissy fit 30 ft away from the opposing players , not like there were punches thrown

Well Done Dirty!

Interesting to me is that our Knight mascot got close to the Michigan team holding up a chop sign and waving them goodbye.

Is that the norm ? Strikes me as a bit unsportsmanlike for the mascot (or anyone affiliated with the team) to do, especially the waving. Fans, sure. But not the team.

In the end, 'no harm no foul' on either side but it seems a few actors on both sides ratcheted up the intensity a little to far down the stretch and after the final whistle.

If we really want to talk about when I saw stuff start at the game it was when that hot head on Michigan got bodied up by McConnell in the paint. Mcconell went down and scored a layup (I believe?) of his own.
Now I noticed words were being said all game. Just look at that dunce Dickinson pumping up the crowd down 6-2. However, Mcconell gave a very tiny elbow to diabete coming back down the court. Shortly later that same guy missed a dunk down low cause of how juices he was at Mcconell.
It was over from there. In my opinion the timeout by Howard with 15 seconds left was bush league and explicit or not led to what happened in the final seconds. I don’t blame that frosh for fouling right after your coach calls a TO like the game is still in reach.

I would agree with all of the OP except moving screen...It was pretty much a normal one but just wasn't necessary...I happen to be in the 4th row behind it all and B knight called Diabate a few choice words and the kid lost it LOL...I did not hear what the player said to Ron. My daughter who was with me said one of the bench players said something to Ron and Ron was like "What? Who the heck R U?" which is pretty funny...In the end no harm no foul...Adds some juice to the next game for sure :-)

I think Ron put it best. It's all fake bravado and BS. Nobody is actually going to punch anyone.

You never cease to disappoint with finding something to fault the team or program. He was at half court and then walked down towards the 3 point area as the UM team walk-ons were almost off the court. A bit aggressive for a mascot? Perhaps but boohoo. The mascot was reacting to the end game antics by UM. Big deal. BTW. While representing the school the Mascot like the Band is not part of the team.
I think the smarter move would be to grab the Knight with the Sword to escort him next time.

BTW. posted something kinda like this in the other "punk" thread. You additional insights/observations answered a few additional questions.
I made the same one about Howard. Surprised that I thought he actually did a good job there end game (after causing some of this lol).

I thought so too @2003alyssa but then I think it was Carino... in fact I know it was... he put something out there, can't find it right now, where he slows the screen down, shows how yes Dickinson was horizontally stationary but he was leaning in big time.. leaned INTO McConnell when setting the screen. Carino was pretty adamant saying "That is a foul!". I tend to agree. Now would it get called end of game when the refs probably just wanna go home? No way. 99% of the time that's not getting called. But yeah, you can't lean in like he did.

I think Ron put it best. It's all fake bravado and BS. Nobody is actually going to punch anyone.
My thoughts exactly... what did the Michigan guy actually hope to accomplish if he wasn't being held back by his teammates? Fight someone in plain view of 10k people, refs, league officials, police, and severely tarnish, if not, ruin his entire career? Not to mention, what could possibly happen during a Big Ten college bball game that could warrant physically assaulting someone in retaliation?

It's rivalry, it's emotion, it's physical, but these guys have more sense than derailing everything they've worked so hard for over a hard foul or some trash talk.

Not a huge deal, but Knight needs to know better.....especially if he wants to be a head coach one day. One stupid incident and his chances of getting a job gets dented.

How about what happened 1 year ago. People are not always rational.

You can't assume Knight did or said anything bad could of just told the kid to calm down or anything and the kid went balistic so who knows but we do know Michigan has the history so it for me is not a good look for them

I have to disagree the moving screen was dirty, his pushes him down after contact.

I think the key point you make regarding Coach Knight, Dirty, is that as “an ex-baller . . . He gets it.” He never struck me as a hothead, and I’m sure he knows the difference between something being part of the game and dirty play.

BTW I rewatched this same great angle vid on my big computer screen and I want to revise something. It appears as though B. Knight is actually jawing with Dir. of Player Dev. Jay Smith FIRST and Diabate hears it and takes offense and becomes a part of it. I initially thought it was the other way around. And who knows, maybe B. Knight was talking about Diabate to Smith. Who knows. But it def. seems like Smith first, Diabate second, not my OG post of Diabate first, Smith second. Smith and B. Knight are damn near face to face initially.

I agree to an extent but as an assistant it’s good to show some fire because the HC cannot. Pike was a scrappy player and it is guys like him and Caleb that piss opposing players off because they play great D. I watched it and lived it many times over the years as a player and a coach and now as a fan. Caleb plays great D and frustrates the crap out of other teams.

Caleb pissed off the one ref early in the game for reacting to calling Caleb for a phantom foul (his first). After that, Caleb did not get a fair whistle from the zebras. I hate thin-skinned refs.

I honestly do not know why basketball refs actually call technicals if they think they are getting "showed up". Why do the conferences tolerate that BS, Football officials don't pull that BS. That should be stopped.. and any ref obviously calling things unfairly should be fired... soon enough you'd have refs that don't care if you do not like the call and call things fairly.

This freedom that basketball refs have just BEGS for them to gamble and cheat.

Yeah, definitely looks like the whole thing started because Brandin Knight was jawing aggressively at Smith. Knight had to be pushed away by Palmquist. Diabate seemed to be reacting to what Knight was saying to Smith, but then not sure why Diabate had to be restrained by three teammates for the next several minutes even though the exchange between Knight and Smith was long over.

This definitely had a Rutgers/SHU circa 1999 feel to it.

If I had to take a wild guess.. I'd say Knight might have suggested that someone is teaching or permitting Michigan players to be thugs... and thus a frosh star took offense to being called a thug.. or some variation of that.. since Diabate was not involved in the late game BS.. it seems doubtful he would be named by Knight.

Tell you what though.. if other teams find out what triggered Diabate, he will have to undergo some counseling soon because it will be relentless....

I wish they would’ve blown the whistle because it probably mattered a little for our computer numbers. Potential 4 point swing, right? They don’t get the meaningless basket and we get free throws.

I think with one of these computer rating systems, you do get credit for winning by double digits. But yeah, it was pretty annoying the way they wouldn't just let the game end and let us have a little celebration. They took all the wind out of our sails by turning our cheers of victory into boos of annoyance.

I’m saying the ref should’ve blown the damn whistle and put Caleb on the line for that ridiculous “screen”. If it wasn’t the last minute in a game where the outcome was clearly determined there’s no way that’s not called.
