Basketball Rutgers to participate in Players Era, an NIL Incentivized Tournament

Some of the responses on this thread are proof that a number of people here don't follow college basketball. These tournaments that take place during Thanksgiving week have been going on for years.

Well the other team in the finals would care for starters. I'm thinking there will be TV coverage of this tournament since it's a first of its kind in season NIL event. So the final will be the most watched game if it's an attractive matchup.

Will likely be streaming only…per cbs.

Doesn’t seem like they’ll have a tv provider..

It’s the same old:
Schools and coaches get money and performance incentives = good
Players get money and performance incentives = end of the world

If this exact same tournament said “We are giving each school $1m towards their scholarship fund and another $1m for winning” then nobody would have complained.

Hell, if they said “We are going to give each coaching staff a $50k bonus for winning” people would be pumped for HC Pike trying extra hard to win these games.

now this is big-time. great job getting into this. finally.

who will televise this?

For fun I asked ChatGPT what coach's response style most closely matches each of the quotes in the CBS article. Here's what it thought.

"If there are events where there's an extraordinary amount of money involved, and there's no donor fatigue involved in this, how do you not play in this?" ....."There's not a decision we make that's not NIL-driven. I'll play in the parking lot of Mandalay Bay, just clear the f----ng check."

^ Based on the blunt and pragmatic tone of these quotes, the writing/response style most closely matches Buzz Williams.

"I would play on Nick Jr., I would play on YouTube. It doesn't matter," "All the other stuff passed through our compliance smell test all the way through. We have not run up against a road block that is a definitive no."

^Given the casual and adaptable attitude conveyed in these quotes, the writing/response style most closely aligns with Nate Oats.

"As long as they get it compliant, our administration is full-go." "You'd be stupid not to do this if you were invited."

^The straightforward and pragmatic tone of these quotes suggests a coach who prioritizes compliance and practicality. This style closely aligns with Kelvin Sampson.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday games? I would have considered flying out if it was played over the weekend. Don't think the family would like the idea of me missing Thanksgiving.

How do other tournaments like Atlantis schedule games? Is it similar?

Just looked up Battle 4 Atlantis dates.

2023 and projected 2024: Wednesday, Thursday (Thanksgiving) and Friday

So it seems it’s the same setup as other tournaments people have been saying Rutgers should play in.

Any chance that Rutgers makes a deal with a hotel/casino to get a special rate for those dates?

Would think if any deals are reached with a casino or a hotel, would be the organizer's doing and not the schools. But I'd be surprised if there isn't something..

Kelvin Sampson and compliance?

Flights are more expensive that week than the previous or next week.

When it's announced this will be an Amazon or Netflix streaming exclusive the responses will be historic.

(Not reporting anything. Just joking/hypothesis about who may get the media rights).
I have both of those, so I am cool . . . 😎😎😎

It's Thanksgiving week.
I would guess it's more expensive flying to Bahamas or any other location for a MTE during that week than it would flying any other week.
