FB Recruiting Transfer QB Athan Kaliakmanis visiting RU

But he's... maybe marginally a better passer than Gavin but doesn't run like Gavin at all. Would he really be a more effective QB?

Even their QBRs are identical, Athan 80th and Gavin 81st.
He is significantly better than gavin.

You guys wanna see a crazy stat to get you excited? As a freshman under kirk at minny, he got thrown into the fire with his first ever start @ Penn State in a stripe out. He struggled and went 9-22 after 1 week of starter reps.

However, after that in his final 5 starts of the year (nebraska, NW, Iowa, wisconsin and syracuse) his stat line was as follows

1) 46/68 for a 68% completion percentage
2) Averaged 10.10 yards per attempt. The best in the country for yards per attempt amongst p5 teams in 2022 for example was 9.7 by Tennessee and that 9.7 included a handful of games against out of conference doormats whereas Athan's we're all vs p5 competition

He actually can run. And throws a much better ball. Watch these highlights. Kirk's offense does not ask the QB to run a lot. They asked Gavin to run because he can't pass.

And this kid can't pass either. 53% completion percentage

18/42 against Purdue this past season. 94 rushing yards on the year. Nothing to brag about.

He didn't really play well this year at all though. He doesn't seem significantly better than Gavin looking at his stats. 🤷

Athan also had the second highest drop rate of any FBS quarterback last season. 13.9% of his passes were drops.

Check his 2022 stats when he was with Kirk. Better yet, watch him play.

It's very obvious. Gavin better get ready to grab a clipboard if we get this kid.

His completion percentage in 2022 is almost the same.

I have no problem with the kid coming in for an open competition. But nothing tells me he's an upgrade, and I watched a few Minn games this season.

Gavin was literally dead last in all of FBS for completion and adjusted completion percentage by a pretty significant margin, literally anyone is an upgrade.

Maybe they tell Dino to add some weight and play more of a TE role. He's 6’2” 200 as listed and didn’t stat for Minnesota.

On the average, yes. There is some cause for hope, however, in that his performance was up/down, but was trending towards improvement.

Let's go game by game, but by %completion, and do average not by # of total passes by game.

Slight edge to Athan.
Troubling that each QB did worse in second half of season.

He throws a catchable ball on tape, I'll give him that. Quick release.

The stats are still a concern though, completion % especially.

Okay but Greg is content to run run run and Gavin is certainly an above average/very good running qb. Hopefully the decrease in running ability isn’t more significant than the increase in throwing/accuracy ability.
Will of course gladly sacrifice some of Gavin’s running ability for greater accuracy, but a solid running qb is a valuable weapon.

Gavin runs ok but his passing is just awful.
