1973: "Rutgers to shoot for big-time on gridiron

So, basically, you're making a plea for patience? Okay. We will give Ash at least one half before we start calling for him to be fired.

They thought going "big time" just meant scheduling better opponents, and everything else would magically follow. I remember the sense on campus after the "almost win" against Alabama in 1980 was "we're big time!" Of course, that only lasted until the next week against William and Mary...

A transplanted garden stater, I was living in South Carolina at the time of the Alabama game. If I remember correctly, Alabama was favored by 49! I was outraged (why, I dunno), and bet the spread against half my department. Never was a loss so fun!

actually, Mildone, I wasn't making a plea for patience. Rutgers' football fans are entitled to be upset that the Scarlet Knights done so little over the past 42 years. (Basketball fans are entitled to be upset, too.) And I realize that explains a lot of the excesses on the board. But I do think fans at times carry their passions too far. Remember, being a fan is supposed to be fun, despite experiencing the agony of defeat without the ecstasy of victory.

In my case, you're preaching to the converted. But that's a message I wish many of our fellow RUFB fans would take to heart.
