Read last week that there are 40 bowls for 80 teams yet there has never been a college football season at the top level where more than 78 teams qualified with .500 or above records. Time to scale back these games.

Whatever the average level of teams with ABOVE .500 records is within one season should be the upper limit for the amount of bowl games.

Remember when we went 7-4 and couldn't get a bowl invite?

Read: yeah, our head coach already retired -- we're kinda busy with other stuff right now.

I read that as not going because of not having a coach yet, not because of their record being 5-7 by itself. If they had a coach ID'ed, dollars to doughnuts they would gladly play in a bowl.

So 4-8 teams will be going instead. The players will love the perks and another game to play while the coaches will will love additional practices to coach and fans who love to watch football will see another game. And recruiters will quickly point out that the other guys had a chance to go bowling turned down an invite so why would any high school athlete want to go there.

All because some old men who claim they won't go or watch 5-7 teams play do not want anyone else to enjoy a bowl trip?

Yup, nothing like a 5-7 team getting "rewarded" for a shitty season and I'm sure recruits will be swarming to those teams, instead of others, because of it, lol....com'on man!

And when they play before a minimal amount of fans because fans won't get enthusiastic about shelling out big $ to watch a crappy team play in a lousy location?

And the end result turns out to be that the school loses a ton of money, which takes away from other things..

Yeah - win win there

Stop with the freaking participation trophies. I can see people defending coaches because their 5-7 teams went to multiple bowls.

Bowls should be a reflection of a good season. Want to give these kids a mini vacation? Just send a donation to send them to Florida for a weekend.

5-7 teams going bowling is flat out embarrassing. Why not just schedule a 13th game for each team that failed to go bowling?

The VA Tech game was the most exciting game I have attended!

Whether a 5-7 team should go to a bowl is a matter of opinion, but Nebraska plans to go should we be offered. One reason is we desperately need the extra practice. The second reason is the B1G would take a dim view if we were offered and declined since it is probable that enough of our fans will show up to make a profit, which is then shared with all B1G teams. I'm not sure how/whether that benefits Rutgers since I don't know your arrangement with regard to bowl money until you are fully vested, but having another B1G team, even a 5-7 team go to a bowl is good for all of us financially.

GOOD FOR THEM!!! Bravo! I applaud all responsible for making this decision.

I agree. I was hoping RU would have the good sense to do the same, had we finished at 5-7, and especially if the invitation was to a bowl with a crummy (ESPN-type) payout where the university would lose money.

I read this morning that the NCAA has approved APR being used to determine the 5-7 teams that will be offered the open bowl bids. Based on that, Nebraska will bowl and we would've been offered a slot if we had beaten Maryland. I would hope we would've pulled the trigger on Flood and Hermann on Sunday even if we were possibly getting a bowl at 5-7. Moot point now.

I hope Nebraska wins their bowl.

....And then the players said they are going or they will walk out
Goodbye! That is probably the reason they only won 5 games in the first place. Under 500% and going to a Bowl, as if they accomplished something! One thing sports should always do, and that is build character.
